Sony to Pay $7.8 Million to PlayStation Users After PSN Antitrust Lawsuit Settlement Gets Preliminary Approval - Image 1

A California court has given the preliminary go-ahead to a settlement agreement between Sony Interactive Entertainment and American players in the amount of $7.85 million. The lawsuit has been dragging on since 2021 — and apparently, the final is already close. Although Sony, as usual, has not admitted its guilt.

Why did the players file a lawsuit against Sony and PlayStation Store

In 2019, Sony quietly removed digital game vouchers from third-party stores from the market. Previously, it was possible to buy a code in a regular store — often at a discount. After this decision, the PlayStation Store became the only way to buy a digital game. The plaintiffs, led by Agustin Kakkuri, claim: It was a deliberate monopolization of the market, which caused prices to stop competing and players to overpay.

The lawsuit accuses Sony of violating federal antitrust laws and a number of state laws, as well as eliminating competition in the digital games market.

Who is eligible for payment under the PSN settlement agreement

The payout will not affect everyone. Here are the conditions for getting on the list:

  • Do you live or have lived in the USA
  • We bought digital games via PSN from April 1, 2019 to December 31, 2023
  • A specific title is included in the list of qualifying games
  • The game was supposed to be sold through vouchers at retail until April 2019, and after that it would rise in price by at least 50 cents.

How Sony will pay back $7.8 million: PSN loans instead of cash

Don’t wait for the check in the mail. The compensation will come in the form of credits directly to the PlayStation Network account — quietly and automatically. Exactly how much is still unknown: the total amount for each player will depend on how many players will be on the list of applicants. The more people there are, the less everyone gets. The math is simple, but not the most enjoyable.

When Sony will pay the money: timing and final hearing

The key date is October 15, 2026. That’s when the final hearing (Fairness Hearing) will take place, where the court will decide whether to consider the agreement fair. If the answer is yes, the money will go to the accounts. If not, the story will continue.

Those who want to withdraw from the agreement or file an objection need to make it by July 2, 2026.

And one more caveat: this is the second attempt to close the case peacefully. In the summer of 2025, Judge Arakeli Martinez-Holguin wrapped up the first version of the agreement. The parties finalized the terms and only then received preliminary approval in April 2026.

The reaction of the gaming community turned out to be predictable: for Sony, $7.8 million is about like finding a change behind the couch for an ordinary person. This will not ruin the company and will not oblige it to change its policy. Vouchers will not be returned to third-party stores. But for those who meet the conditions, it’s still real money in the account, even if it’s virtual.
