Kinetic Games just unveiled its Phasmophobia 2026 roadmap—and its plans are far more ambitious than anyone could have imagined. The studio isn’t just listing patches; they’re preparing a full-scale overhaul of the game: from reworking iconic maps to upgrading to Unity 6, from targeted quality-of-life improvements to the long-awaited 1.0 release. And that’s far from all.

Kinetic Games Plans and the Phasmophobia 2026 Roadmap

If you look at the month-by-month schedule, the schedule is quite revealing. July 21st marks the first major wave: a rework of the 13 Willow Street map and the first QoL update. August will add a second round of quality-of-life improvements, and October will mark the transition to the new Unity 6 engine, which should significantly improve stability and performance.

Phasmophobia Unity 6 update

In November, the developers will focus on the visual side: updating player models and animations and expanding clothing customization.

December is dedicated to the rework of 42 Edgefield Road and the launch of the annual “Winters Jest” event. The main goals remain behind us in 2026: the full release of Phasmophobia 1.0, a Switch 2 port, and the announcement of a completely new map—all planned for 2027, though no exact date has been set yet.

13 Willow Street Map Update in Phasmophobia

The 13 Willow Street update is the first in line—it will be released on July 21st. According to the developers, the layout will remain largely unchanged, so tactical gamers won’t be lost. However, the rooms will receive a fresh design, new interactive objects will appear, and most importantly, the map contains a hidden story that players will have to piece together. An intriguing twist that will add replayability even to veterans.

New QoL improvements for Phasmophobia gameplay

Alongside the Willow Street rework, the first of two planned QoL updates will be released, with the second coming in August. The developers have already revealed some of the changes, but have saved some surprises for release day.

Confirmed features include:

  • Hotkeys for inventory slots (1, 2, 3, 4) – you can finally switch equipment instantly.
  • Adjusting the field of view for items in your hands is a small, but nice touch.
  • Eye adaptation option for console players, reducing squinting in dark corridors.
  • The van on the Prison and Brownstone High maps has been moved closer to the entrances, reducing tedious running.
  • Limited map variants will be introduced for the schools and prisons in Cape Hope, adding variety.

A separate section is dedicated to the VR mode: equipment handling has been improved, the belt has been redesigned, and movement has been made more natural – in short, virtual ghost hunters will have a more comfortable experience.

Important changes to the Phasmophobia interface and settings

The customization store will feature a screen with old icons, allowing you to revisit your favorite retro style at any time. Collected bones will now be marked in your journal, and you can now choose your ghost type in the custom difficulty settings. The zoom function in the store will be smarter, zooming in on the selected area.

You can also now pick up your watch without dropping your equipment. Character animations will be refined: leg movements will be smoother, and appearances upon death will be more varied. Perhaps most importantly for gameplay dynamics: equipment changes will be faster, the journal will open and close almost instantly, and you can use items without waiting for the animation. The photo system will also be improved, with an indicator similar to video cameras, so you know when your photo has been counted.

Phasmophobia transition to the Unity 6 engine and new rendering

The October update will be perhaps the most technically significant for Phasmophobia in recent years. Kinetic Games will be migrating the game to Unity 6, which represents a major engine version upgrade and rendering overhaul. The developers promise not only overall stability and a host of fixes, but also a completely new lighting system. Imagine the shadows playing in the corridors of Brownstone or the atmosphere on the Cape of Hope map—lighting has always been half the horror in this game.

Furthermore, the transition to the new engine will automatically bring additional quality-of-life improvements, accessibility, and, of course, bug fixes. Some of these weren’t included in the summer QoL patches, so October will be a second wind for optimization.

Phasmophobia Character Model and Animation Update

In November, the team will be working on the appearance of the Ghostbusters themselves. Details are scarce so far—the developers are keeping things under wraps, and we haven’t seen any concept art. However, it is already known that the update will affect models, animations, the interface, and, of course, customization. New clothing items and possibly even unique accessories will be added.

New character models

Thanks to the transition to Unity 6, we can expect the characters to not just look different, but also to be more graphically detailed. Smoother movements, more detailed equipment, new emotions, and reactions to events—all of this should enhance immersion. It seems the developers want to bring the visuals up to par with modern horror games, and November will be the first major step in that direction.

42 Edgefield Road Map Rework and New Challenges

In December, 42 Edgefield Road will be reworked in a similar way to Willow and Tanglewood, although there’s no official confirmation of a stylistic unity yet. We’ll likely see a similar approach: a familiar layout, but fresh details, new interactive objects, and perhaps a bit of hidden lore.

But the December update won’t be limited to just one map. Kinetic Games plans to overhaul the weekly challenge system and voice recognition. What exactly will change is a closely guarded secret. Perhaps the challenges will become more dynamic, and voice commands more accurate? Or will new conditions be added? Time will tell.

Phasmophobia 10 release date and Nintendo Switch 2 port

The biggest news is that the release of the full version of Phasmophobia has been permanently postponed to the second half of 2027. Yes, the developers were initially aiming for the end of 2026, but apparently the scope of the work turned out to be larger. However, the game is officially being ported to the Nintendo Switch 2 alongside 1.0. It’s a long wait, but for fans of portable consoles, there’s definitely a reason to wait.

Phasmophobia 1.0 release

Furthermore, a completely new map is expected to be included with the release—nothing is known about it yet, other than its existence. One can only speculate whether it will be a continuation of the classic locations or offer something radically different. In any case, 2027 promises to be a year of rebirth for Phasmophobia.

Players react to the delayed release of Phasmophobia 10

Kinetic Games’ reputation hasn’t been in tatters for some time, but it was the studio’s recent decisions that have finally broken the bank for fans. When the developers rolled out the Player Character Update on May 5th, they clearly weren’t expecting such a powerful blow to the casual player base: the title’s Steam rating immediately plummeted, and the share of recent reviews fell to 75%. Statistics for the past month are depressing—for every 600 positive reviews, there were nearly 2,000 negative ones.

A quarter of positive reviews for a co-op horror game that has maintained a solid Overwhelmingly Positive rating since the end of 2020 is a disaster. Against this backdrop, the developers’ promise to “regain the audience’s trust,” outlined in the new development plan, will seem like a polite gesture, not an official admission of their own impotence.

Why the Player Character Update Has Fans Upset?

The community’s anger is fueled by two systemic issues that can’t be fixed with standard patches.

First, Kinetic Games removed the game’s iconic “Bendy Backs” feature—those unnaturally curved characters when looking up, which over the past five years have become a staple of the community’s memes. The new horror-themed character animations, designed to scare, evoke laughter and comparisons to The Exorcist.

Second, gamers are faced with unnecessary grinding: PC players never saw the promised variety of cosmetics in update 0.17.1.0, and the developers hid unique rewards behind the prestige system. Now, to unlock customization, players must reach level 100, reset their progress, and start over. The situation was exacerbated by the technical state of the co-op horror game after the release of the crossover with Alan Wake. Along with the content, bugs crept into the game: broken animations, stuck objects, and models’ arms that wandered.

Phasmophobia’s creators didn’t go radio silent and published an open letter acknowledging the fair criticism and frankly stating, “We missed the mark.”

Gamers’ opinions on Kinetic Games’ change of plans

The news of the delayed full release has divided fans. Some players are frankly tired of Kinetic Games’ habit of releasing half-baked patches and then rushing to patch holes with endless hotfixes. For them, this latest change of plans is a sign of a systemic crisis within the studio. More pragmatic gamers, on the other hand, consider the decision the right one, arguing that it’s better to wait for a quality product on PC than to receive a broken version 1.0.

What gamers viewed positively What points raise strong skepticism
The decision to delay version 1.0 for polishing, not just to meet a deadline Trust is exhausted — this is already the studio’s third “second chance”
A large-scale rework of the 13 Willow Street map as a sign of a new direction The developers did not show a single concept art piece for the updated characters
A promise to release regular Development Reviews starting in 2027 The phrase “we’ll show it later” appears next to half of the roadmap items
Direct admission of mistakes by leadership instead of generic PR replies A history of rushed, broken hotfixes instead of stable builds

Kinetic Games’ management is trying to change its direction. As Marketing Director Asim Tanvir notes, the release delay is solely due to the desire to deliver maximum quality at the launch of version 1.0. CEO Daniel Knight, for his part, called the controversial Player Character Update only the first step toward a major transformation of the project, the details of which will be revealed on July 21st. The Phasmophobia development team has grown to over 50 people, and the studio is now consciously sacrificing speed for the sake of restoring its reputation. The effectiveness of this commitment to full transparency with the audience will become clear during the first broadcasts in early 2027.

New lore-gathering mechanics and the Channel system in Phasmophobia

The final thing Kinetic Games confirmed for version 1.0 is the Conduits system. This will replace the traditional collectible bones. Players will now collect skeletal remains, artifacts tied to specific ghost models.

Each Conduits unlocks fragments of lore—new details about the game’s world and the nature of the entities they encounter. This mechanic is clearly aimed at deepening immersion and encouraging exploration. Instead of mindlessly searching for bones each round, players will purposefully hunt for specific ghosts to piece together the puzzle of the story. It’s still unclear how many channels are planned and how exactly they affect gameplay, but the idea looks fresh and intriguing. We can only wait for more details—and hope that 2027 arrives sooner.
