In Windrose, darkness isn’t just a hindrance, it’s a real enemy. Your lamp becomes your primary survival tool: it illuminates the way through caves, aids in nighttime forays, and protects you from unexpected encounters with the denizens of the dark. There’s just one problem: the fuel burns out faster than you’d like. And at the most inopportune moment, the lamp can flicker and go out, leaving you in complete darkness.

To prevent this, you need to clearly understand where to get fuel and how to refill the lamp. If you’re planning long forays, this system is a must-have. Below is everything you’ll need to ensure you always have light.

How to refill a lamp in Windrose: instructions

Animal fat fuel lamp

To refill, you need a workbench. Go to it, open the interface, and select the “refill” tab in the upper left corner. There you’ll see a slot for animal fat—this is what serves as fuel. A full tank requires three units of fat, so keep a sufficient supply. The lamp doesn’t last forever—a single charge lasts for 10-20 minutes of active use. That doesn’t sound like much, but in a real fight or when exploring a labyrinthine cave, that’s barely enough time to reach the exit. So, be prepared. Experienced players recommend carrying not only fat but also at least 20 wood—in case you urgently need to build a workbench in the field.

This is especially critical in deep caves or dark areas, where losing light means almost certain death. Without the lamp, you can’t see enemies, traps, or the way back. So keep the lamp full—and darkness won’t be your last memory.

Where to find animal fat in Windrose: top sources

Get animal fat in Windrose

The main source of fuel is hunting boars. These animals are found a little further from the starting island, not in the very first location, but they’re easy to reach. Boars are not an endangered species, but if you plan to rely on the lamp constantly, be prepared to hunt regularly. Routine, yes, but it’s essential.

Each carcass drops one or two units of fat. Simple math: to fill your tank, you need to kill at least two boars (or better yet, three, with extra). And so on after every foray into the darkness. Farming becomes routine, especially if you’re actively exploring caves or walking at night. Keep a supply on hand, and your lamp won’t flicker at a crucial moment.

Fast Lamp Oil Farming: Map and Route

Farming route map Windrose

Boars are just the tip of the iceberg. Fat in Windrose drops from several sources simultaneously, and if you don’t run around the island like a chicken, but rather form a proper circle, you can easily earn 15-25 units in 20 minutes with a single run. The trick is simple. Don’t chase each carcass separately—stitch everything together into a single cycle: hunting, quickly stealing from merchants, and returning home through respawn points.

Optimal Route for Farming Fat in One Loop

The starting point is the workbench on the main island. From here, head northwest, into the forest belt above the starting camp: 3-4 boars are constantly hanging around here, and their respawn time is quite fast—about 8 minutes. Collect the fat and head to the eastern crossing. Along the way, you’ll often encounter deer—each one drops one fat, plus some extra skin (a small change, but useful for bags).

Next is the neighboring island. A supply merchant’s tent is pitched there, and his chest almost always contains 2-4 fat and some dried meat. After stealing the fat, immediately dive into the cave to the south—there are two spawns of overgrown boars inside, each dropping 2-3 fat per carcass. The loop ends with a return to base. Pick up wood for a new workbench along the way to avoid a second trip—this saves about five minutes per lap.

Resource Farming Route

Route Point Target Loot per Run Time
Forest Belt (Start) Boars ×3 3-6 fat 4 min
Eastern Crossing Deer ×2 2 fat, skin 3 min
Merchant’s Tent Chest Theft 2-4 fat, meat 2 min
Southern Cave Alpha Boars ×2 4-6 fat 6 min
Return to Base Wood on path 20+ sticks 5 min

Leviathan or stealing from merchants: which is more profitable?

Leviathan is the way to go for those who like to get things done right away. A single carcass drops 12-18 units of fat, meaning you’ll practically have enough fuel for several raids. But there’s a catch: a DPS check. Without a +2 Iron Harpoon and a stack of stamina potions, the fight will drag on for 5-7 minutes—and the lamp, the reason for all this, will burn out completely. It’s a paradox, but newbies get caught in it all the time.

Stealing is a completely different story. Enter the camp at night, when the NPCs are snoring, and open the chest with a lockpick or a marked coin. The fat drop rate is around 60%, and bandages, salt, and sometimes blueprints are often included. The main risk is a patrol. If spotted, your faction reputation plummets, and the merchant closes the point for two in-game days. It’s a shame, but not fatal.

Farming Methods Comparison

Parameter Leviathan Merchant Theft
Loot per Attempt 12–18 fat 2–4 fat
Requirements Harpoon +2, 40+ HP Lockpick, Stealth
Risk of Death High Low
Cooldown 25 min respawn 2 days reputation
Best for Long-term farming Quick start

The build conclusion is simple. If you’re leveling an archer or a thief, stealing pays off more reliably because stealth and agility are leveled simultaneously. Is there a tank with a shield in the party? Then the Leviathan is more profitable in terms of “time to fat unit” ratio, especially in long sessions.

Infinity Lamp Crafting Errors: 5 Main

Infinity lamp crafting interface

The Infinity Lamp is an upgrade to the basic lamp with an auto-recharge from essence. It sounds like a dream. In practice, newbies waste rare reagents in bulk due to five recurring errors—and then wonder why it doesn’t light up.

  • Crafting on a regular workbench. The Infinity Lamp can only be crafted on a level II alchemy table—period. On a regular workbench, the recipe is grayed out, but it can still be confirmed through an interface bug. Result: the blueprint burns.
  • Spoiled fat in the recipe. Fat from rotting carcasses (stored in your inventory for 3+ days) is visually indistinguishable from fresh fat. The lamp uses it to assemble silently and then silently refuses to light after refilling. Always read the tooltip before crafting—it’s where the freshness indicator is.
  • Missing essence of light. You need either essence from fireflies or a crystal from a deep cave. Without it, the lamp will assemble, but it will function like a regular lamp—no infinity. Fix: disassemble it on a workbench and reassemble it with a proper reagent.
  • Crafting up to level 15 in “Alchemy.” Below that threshold, the failure rate is 40%, and resources are wasted. Leveling up these 15 levels takes an hour and a half, but saves dozens of fat and rare crystals.
  • Pirated build 1.0.3. In this version, the lighting shader hasn’t been updated—the lamp simply doesn’t light. Patch 1.0.7 fixed the problem, but only for licensed players. For pirated versions, it’s a lottery.

If the lamp is assembled but isn’t working, don’t rush to craft a second one. First, remove the modifier at the workbench and check the essence slot. Nine times out of ten, that’s where the problem lies.

Spare lamp in Windrose: why bother bringing it on a trip?

Honestly? When I was mining copper on my last run and running back to camp just to refuel, I got fed up with it. The solution is simple: craft a couple more lamps and take them with me. At the start, one is more than enough. But on other islands, in the large caves of Windrose, I started burning through one or two fully charged lamps per run. So, it’s better to be safe than sorry—a second lamp in your inventory is never a bad thing.
