The Turok series languished in a deep coma for nearly two decades. Dark jungles, dinosaur blood, and the iconic “brain-drilling” gameplay remained only in the memories of fans. The shots had died down, and the franchise that once defined the genre was consigned to the shelf to gather dust. But those shots weren’t the last. Turok: Origins isn’t a remaster of an old game or a timid attempt to cash in on nostalgia. It’s a full-fledged prequel reboot from Saber Interactive, designed to remind us why hunting dinosaurs with a huge gun is so damn fun. And from first impressions, they’ve succeeded.

A Prequel with Ambitions: What We Know About Turok: Origins

Turok: Origins takes place many years before the events of the classic 1997 game. The story centers on the futuristic warriors of the ancient Order of Turok, who battle a race of reptilian humanoids called the Xenia. It sounds like a pure sci-fi B-movie, which is perfect for Turok. According to the developers, the story campaign can be completed in approximately 12 hours, completely offline.

Saber Interactive, the studio behind Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, is approaching the release with the utmost seriousness. The game is positioned as an evolution of the series: an action game old-school in spirit but modern in execution. The gameplay is built on a super-fast pace, sweeping firefights, and an abundance of spectacular cutscenes. You’ll race through the jungles of several planets, tearing apart everything that moves.

Three-Player Hunting: Co-op, Classes, and Freedom of Action

One of the main features of Turok: Origins is its three-player co-op. You can play through the entire campaign with friends, or solo if you don’t trust your teammates. But the developers clearly tailored the gameplay to team play.

You’ll have three Primal Forms at your disposal, each essentially a separate class:

Turok Origins character classes

  • Cougar — a class focused on attack and maximum weapon damage. For those who prefer to solve problems with brute force and at close range.
  • Bison — a defensive class that absorbs damage and helps control crowds of enemies.
  • Raven — a long-range specialist, a sniper and archer who effectively picks off targets from a safe distance.

Each class has its own skill tree, skins, and specializations, but the most interesting thing is that they can be freely switched on the fly. Moreover, the game allows you to instantly switch between first- and third-person perspectives. This provides incredible flexibility: explore your environment in third-person, and during a fierce firefight, switch to classic FPS mode.

DNA, Upgrades, and the Return of a Legend: All About Combat and Customization

Saber Interactive has rebooted Turok and deepened its mechanics. Firstly, the iconic Cerebral Bore returns—the very same “brain drill” that fires a homing projectile that burrows into its victim’s head. With the appropriate upgrades, it can attack up to three enemies simultaneously. Secondly, Turok: Origins introduces a gear progression system. Weapons and armor can be upgraded and modified with dozens of Mods, allowing you to tailor your shooting style to your needs.

New to the series are EchoSyncs—special abilities you gain by extracting DNA from defeated bosses. For example, a powerful sonic attack or a deafening roar, effectively dispersing a crowd of enemies. The bosses themselves look wild. Judging by the demo footage, we’ll be facing off against a large mechanical T-Rex that uses everything it can: tail swipes, bites, shockwaves, homing missiles, and even eye lasers.

What’s changed compared to the classic Turok games: the evolution of a legendary series

Obviously, Turok: Origins is more than just better graphics. Saber Interactive has thoroughly overhauled the old mechanics, preserving the soul of the original but completely redesigning how it plays. Here are the key differences from the classic games:

  • Perspective Changes: The original games were exclusively first-person shooters. Here, we’re offered a hybrid system with the ability to switch to third-person perspective (TPS) with a single button. This cosmetic change completely changes the perception of combat and cover tactics.
  • Co-op Structure: Previously, you fought alone. Now the entire story campaign is built for co-op play for up to three players. Furthermore, distinct roles (tank, damage dealer, support) have been introduced, something the original never had.
  • Progression System: The classic Turok was a “pure” hardcore shooter. Origins introduces full skill trees, gear progression, and a modular weapon modification system. You find a gun, then customize it to suit your playstyle.
  • Action-focused: Labyrinth-like levels and searching for colored keys are practically a thing of the past. Gameplay has become more linear and dynamic, focusing on constant firefights with waves of enemies and powerful bosses.

Essentially, this isn’t a nostalgic remake, but a reimagining of the formula for today’s reality: faster, more dynamic, and more engaging.

Should fans of the original series expect Turok: Origins?

The question that plagues all longtime fans: “Have they ruined the classics?” Judging by what we’ve seen, there’s no need to worry. Yes, the mechanics have changed, and the game is no longer a hardcore “lonely jungle simulator.” But the creators treat the legacy with respect.

  • You’re holding the “Cerebral Bore”: The iconic head-bursting gun is back and better.
  • Dinosaurs are still vicious and dangerous: Raptors leap out of the bushes, Tyrannosaurs destroy the environment, and Xenia’s aliens hinder your tactical thinking.
  • The atmosphere of violence is still there: Bloody massacres and strict kill animations remain an important part of the aesthetic.

If you were expecting Turok 2.0 with modern graphics and co-op, this is the best option. If you were looking for that same viscous FPS from the 90s, you’ll have to accept that gaming has evolved. Saber Interactive has emphasized team play and spectacle, and early press reviews (like IGN and Polygon’s impressions) confirm that this is exactly the kind of crazy, bloody fun we’ve been waiting for.
