Halo Studios held a July Q&A session and answered the main question fans had been asking: will there be a disc in the box? Yes, there will be. The Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 versions will receive a full Blu-ray disc. There will be no codes in the box, like with GTA 6. But don’t relax yet—there’s a warning on the packaging that changes a lot.

Mandatory download even with a disc—what are the developers hiding?
Eurogamer pointed out a detail that most media outlets missed: the Halo: Campaign Evolved box states “Content download required.” In other words, a disc isn’t a panacea. Part of the game (and apparently a significant amount) will still have to be downloaded from the internet.
The exact gigabytes are unknown. Neither the developers nor Microsoft are disclosing this figure. This is a key information gap, and it remains open. If you were expecting an offline installation “out of the box,” be prepared for surprises.
However, a disc still offers advantages: you have physical media, a Steelbook, and resale options. It’s not a “code in a box”—it’s a compromise.
Premium Edition ($69.99) provides early access starting July 23rd and the Alpha Halo Armory Pack—5 armor skins and 6 weapon skins. The Collector’s Edition ($199.99) is already sold out—it included a 30-centimeter statue of Master Chief, a glowing Cortana chip, a Steelbook, and a physical manual.
Halo Campaign Evolved Pre-Order Editions and Prices
Pre-orders are open on the Xbox Store, PlayStation Store, and Steam. The Standard Edition is $49.99. The Premium Edition is $69.99, digital only. The physical Collector’s Edition is $199.99, but it’s no longer in stock.
Every pre-order includes the Foundry Armory Pack: a classic 2001 armor skin, a rifle skin, and two “Gilded Onyx”-themed variants.
Important: The physical Steam version is a code in the box; there is no disc. Only Xbox and PS5 receive the Blu-ray.
Why is Microsoft so aggressively promoting the disc now?
The answer lies in context. Sony announced it would cease production of physical PlayStation discs starting in 2028. Rockstar Games confirmed that the physical GTA 6 edition will come with a code in the box. Meanwhile, Microsoft is doing the exact opposite—and turning it into a marketing ploy.
In the official Halo Studios FAQ, they explicitly state that when you purchase the Xbox or PlayStation version at your local store, you receive a physical case and a disc—”tangible items to add to your collection.” This is a deliberate move against the trend.
Coincidence? Unlikely. Microsoft is hitting the same nerve where Sony and Rockstar left a gap. And judging by the reaction, fans appreciate it.
