The developers of Dead by Daylight have rolled out a roadmap for 2026, extending into early 2027—and it’s arguably one of the most ambitious in the history of the asymmetrical horror franchise. Some of the plans were already teased during the tenth anniversary celebration, but the meat of the story is still to come.
The most high-profile item is the graphics update, which won’t hit the game for at least a year. A teaser was shown during the anniversary stream: the dynamic weather and reworked lighting look polished, and this isn’t just cosmetic—it looks like the engine will be getting a serious overhaul.
But even before then, there’s plenty to do. In December, for example, the new original map “Shopping Mall” will finally appear in the Fog—fans have been clamoring for it practically since launch, and now it’s finally here, further enhancing Dwight’s story arc. This month also marks the return of the Ice Shivers event and the arrival of a collaboration with Scooby-Doo—yes, that one.
A busy schedule of crossovers is shaping up: October will see a Diablo IV crossover, March 2027 will see content based on The Curse of Frankenstein, and the collaboration with the metal band Ice Nine Kills will apparently become permanent: new waves are promised after the June event. Silent Hill hasn’t been forgotten either—they’re also preparing some surprises.
A separate month-by-month overview is worthwhile. June brings the new survivor Shane Wigwaas, the anniversary event Black Feast, and the first run of Ice Nine Kills. July will bring the Sunflesh Rift and limited-time modes. August marks the arrival of the Choir of Sin chapter. September marks the return of the 2v8 mode. October marks the new Rift, Ghostlight, and that Diablo crossover. November marks the arrival of Clown Art. December marks the map, Ice Shiver, and Scooby-Doo. January 2027 marks the return of a new Rift. March marks Frankenstein. April marks another survivor.
Favorite events are returning on schedule, and the Black Feast looks promising—perhaps it will help players cope with the tragic loss of Trixie. Overall, Behaviour Interactive is clearly committed to retaining their audience for years to come, and the roadmap confirms this. All that remains is to wait.

Official Dead by Daylight Modding in 2027
The most powerful, albeit unfairly overlooked, announcement of the anniversary stream wasn’t a graphical overhaul or new crossovers. Developers Behaviour Interactive have taken a radical step and are opening Dead by Daylight to official modding (sandboxed modding). Players will finally be able to access a fully functional toolkit, allowing them to create unique locations and custom modes directly within the game client, without hacks or third-party software. The release is scheduled for 2027. The studio is deliberately taking a slow break to polish the toolkit—no one wants to release a raw product to the masses.
Why DBD developers aren’t using Steam Workshop
The key marker of the upcoming changes is the word “curated.” Behaviour Interactive isn’t planning on causing chaos. Instead, they’re creating a strictly moderated showcase for user-generated creativity, with a curated selection and an internal ecosystem for sharing content.
This cautious approach is a necessary necessity. An open platform like Steam Workshop would be a legal nightmare for the game, as half of DBD’s cast of maniacs and survivors are licensed by Capcom, Konami, Warner Bros., and a dozen other horror franchise owners. A curated model minimizes the risk of lawsuits and protects partners’ intellectual property.

How Custom Content Will Change DBD’s Gameplay
Custom Modes Without Bugs or Limitations
Currently, any gameplay experiments at Behavior Interactive are hand-crafted and only launched temporarily—take 1v1 duels, zombie mods, or the massive 2v8 mode. The introduction of a sandbox will shift the generation and testing of wild ideas to the community, while developers will be able to integrate the best and most polished versions into the main client.
Community-Demand Map Creation
The developers have already confirmed that the new “Shopping Mall” location was born from quarterly surveys, where over 100,000 players voted. Modding will eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy: a popular map will appear in the hands of some enthusiast in a single weekend, rather than after a year of development within the studio.
New Content Formats for Streamers
Unique mechanics and fan-made maps will provide a powerful boost for content creators. Fresh video and stream formats will attract viewers, providing an infusion of fresh blood to a project already in its second decade.

Why the developers abandoned Dead by Daylight 2?
Interestingly, the integration of mods aligns perfectly with another important decision by the studio: the complete abandonment of the idea of a sequel. Producer José Ramos has openly stated that developing Dead by Daylight 2 would have forced the team to “leave too much behind.” For this reason, Behaviour Interactive chose the path of a long-term evolution of the original rather than rebuilding the code from scratch.
“Mods are a great way to up the ante and put DBD in the hands of players,” emphasizes José Ramos.

A full-fledged graphical update lays the technical foundation for the next ten years, and the sandbox guarantees an endless stream of free content on top of this base.
Veterans of asymmetrical horror, however, should keep their cool. The curated format means strict censorship, which means many crazy mods will never make it into the game. Furthermore, the vague release date of “sometime in 2027” hints that the project is still a work in progress. The developers are sharing their plans early for the sake of maximum transparency, but they’re still a long way from completion.
