A U.S. court has officially ordered gamer Sebastian Araujo from Lomita to pay a hefty sum of $175,521 due to his continuous use of cheats while participating in competitive Fortnite matches. This ruling was issued following a lawsuit filed by Epic Games back in December 2024. According to the court documents, Araujo was involved in an impressive total of 839 online tournaments featuring cash prizes over the course of four months. During this time, he repeatedly utilized third-party software to circumvent the game’s anti-cheat measures, raising significant concerns about fair play within the gaming community.

Moreover, he utilized several accounts and sophisticated spoofing tools to effectively hide his actual equipment and true identity from others. The total earnings for this player amounted to approximately $6,850; however, the damages were assessed at a significantly higher level, taking into consideration each instance of copyright violation and the impact of his actions on the gaming community.

The court cited the following major factors when calculating the damages:

  • Repeated use of multiple alternate accounts to bypass bans;
  • Employment of advanced spoofing software to mask hardware identifiers;
  • Proven monetary gains obtained through exploitative gameplay and potential cheat dissemination;
  • Demonstrated negative influence on the wider player base and community integrity;
  • The number and frequency of copyright infringements directly violating Epic Games’ terms.

The court required Araújo to pay $200 for every infringement, leading to a substantial total of $167,800. The additional nearly $8,000 covered legal fees and various court expenses incurred during the proceedings. Epic Games pursued an additional $100,000 in penalties, arguing that the damages deserved further compensation, but the court ultimately found the awarded amount to be adequate for the situation. As a further consequence of his actions, Araújo received a lifetime ban from accessing Fortnite, ensuring that he would no longer be able to participate in the game he once exploited.
