The history of Hammerfight — or Hammerfall, or maybe just Hammerfight… Over five years of development, the game managed to change several names, acquire many beta versions and become something more than just a project for its creator. It is easy to imagine how Konstantin Koshutin persistently went towards his goal: rewrote lines of code, chose a name, looked for the right rhythm for his creation. Even the usual loading bar in his vision turned into the flowering of amazing plants. At the same time, he had no desire to build a cult around his name — he devoted all his attention to the game itself. And therefore I want to say “thank you” to the person who managed to create not just a product, but a real work of art. Hammerfight is not just a walkthrough for the sake of it. It is rather a fairy tale in which you can delay the moment of meeting in the palace, dive headlong into the Abyss or go to the end without extending a hand to the enemy.

In the Sublunary World, people communicate in an unusual way – their speech sounds as if Master Yoda himself put the word order into it. They are generally patient and peace-loving, but if an argument arises, everything is often resolved right in the arena, in front of the spectators. This world is full of grandeur: sand dunes neighbor sheer cliffs, between fortresses scattered across the expanses of the sky. Air travel is especially honored here – heavy loads are carried by giant flying worms. Under their bellies, gondolas hang on thin ropes, in which nomads and traders swing, and nearby, wary guards operate strange-looking steam engines. The main character of this story is Gaiar. His people, the Gaiars, live in the endless steppe expanses. They are free hunters, far from palace intrigues and the struggle for power. Only those who have proven their strength and dignity are accepted into their ranks. As soon as our hero becomes a full-fledged Hunter, fate brings him a test – a breathless messenger reports the approach of an enemy army.

From this moment on, Gaiar’s life turns into a series of severe trials. He will defend the walls of his native fortress from ruthless invaders, hide in underground passages from a swarm of flying worms, get captured and break free, punishing those who imagined themselves to be his masters. The world around him changes, and the hero himself changes with it. Somewhere he needs to overthrow the ruler who destroyed his tribe, and somewhere he needs to help a clan forced to leave the lands because of the awakened lair of monsters. Each choice leaves a mark, and it is no longer possible to return to the old path.
But it will not be possible to go through everything in one go. Some battles will remain only a distant echo – the ringing of steel and screams are heard somewhere in the distance, while Gaiar goes forward on his way.

Physics and weapons in Hammerfight
In Hammerfight, the controls are entirely mouse-based. There are no traditional buttons for hitting — the weapon literally comes to life from your movements. You drive the “rodent” across the mat — and the projectile flies at the opponent, crashing into his armor with a roar. The wider the swing, the more powerful the blow. Young Gaiar begins his journey with a primitive cobblestone on a chain, but over time he learns to handle a much more cunning weapon. “Blind” blows gradually give way to precise lunges: between armor plates, at a flimsy bottle of poison, or directly at the ceiling to bring down stones on the enemy’s head.
The physics in Hammerfight surprises with its honesty. The wall does not simply “shake” — it collapses into pieces, and each stone is capable of knocking out anyone unlucky enough to be nearby. An explosion is not a beautiful special effect, but chaos that throws debris tens of meters around. The atmosphere of the battle is enhanced by the sounds of drums and the shouts of opponents, but sometimes everything is spoiled by a banal thing: the mouse flies off the mat. A sweeping swing, and you have to return it to its place so as not to screw up the next blow. And battles require dozens, if not hundreds of swings in a row!
There is, however, a clever way. If you increase the sensitivity of the mouse, the game turns into a spectacular action movie. With one movement, you can send an enemy over the horizon, the next second knock the weapon out of another and, turning sharply, slam him into the wall. The crowd will appreciate such performances. One day you will be called “Merciful” – if you spare the enemy, another – “Cruel”, when you decide it’s time to see what is hidden inside the steam engines.

An enemy with a scarlet blade? No panic. Gaiar will only grin and spin the spiked mace, turning the battle into a dance of steel and sparks. A second – and the enemy’s weapon is already in your hands. But he won’t give up either: he’ll pick up the fallen mace and try to resist… although the outcome has long been decided. That same fiery blade hides a singing stone. These rare relics are rare: one is kept by a giant octopus in a dungeon, another is the owner of an arena that chains slaves and releases monsters against them for fun. Each obtained relic is worth the effort, but the reward is also significant: some stones heal wounds at the cost of the blood of enemies, others make the body intangible for a moment, allowing you to pass through an enemy blade as if through air.
Gaiar cannot be shackled in a framework – he is free to choose for himself. You can take a couple of automata-comrades who do not know what “friendly fire” is and go into the depths for the stone. You can go to the stadium to play Hammerball – a wild mix of football and cricket, where the ball is a weapon. Or you can just look into the arsenal and change the sabre to a flail to test it on the eternal training barrel.
The arsenal here is rich. Light blades for quick lunges will require precision and composure. Huge hammers will send enemies flying, but if you miss, they will be torn out of your hands. Chains are a special story: in skilled hands, they become a universal weapon. They can hook the enemy’s gondola, or you can sharply dodge a blow at close range and deliver a decisive lunge. The machine can withstand both two flails and a sword with a hammer – the main thing is to learn how to combine them correctly. Hammerfight is not about simple battles. This is a story about how every mouse movement becomes a decision – to be merciful or cruel, a hero or an executioner. And here, each player has his own legend.
Hammerfight: Pros and Cons
Titles, glittering weapons, ringing dinars, colorful speeches and one adventure after another — this is how Hammerfight is etched in your memory. When you dive into the game, it’s easy to believe that in this fantastic Sublunary world your actions really matter. Over time, you begin to understand: this is not just a game, but a real oriental fairy tale. As if the pages of “1001 Nights” come to life before your eyes — with palace intrigues, heroism, honor and, of course, boundless imagination.

True, Scheherazade herself, if she were the narrator of this story, would hardly have stretched out the narrative. Arena fights, hunts and epic duels can be described endlessly, but the plot does not become drawn out — and this has its own harmony.
