The history of FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage seems extremely simple, but in reality it gets confused in dates and versions. It all started in the summer of 2006, when FlatOut 2 was released on PC. A year later, Xbox 360 owners received its updated version — UC, and a year later the port moved to computers. There is no doubt that this is a console port: the menu is adorned with the characteristic icons of the A, B, X and Y buttons, as if you were still holding a joystick. At such moments, players usually have anxious thoughts — “what if the controls are broken, the optimization is terrible, the game slows down or crashes?” But here you can breathe a sigh of relief: the controls are in order. Five and a half buttons are hard to spoil, even if you really want to. But the optimization — as usual, let down.

But in technical terms, UC has stepped forward and noticeably improved compared to its predecessor. Dynamic lighting adds depth, objects finally cast realistic shadows, and lumps of dirt and clouds of dust fly from under the wheels, blocking the view right on the screen. Gas stations with updated car models explode spectacularly and loudly, albeit according to a scripted scenario. The atmosphere has also changed: instead of the previous rich and warm tones, cold, sharp colors now prevail. Even the water has been transformed, becoming “shaded” and more convincing. The only thing that really stands out from the picture are the trees. They still look like they were forgotten to be finished.

The main problem is that it is almost impossible to distinguish Ultimate Carnage from FlatOut 2. There are very few differences. The career mode has remained unchanged: the same old wrecks (okay, they added a couple of new ones) are divided into three familiar classes – Derby, Race, Street. Each has three stages, plus mini-races and finals. We still participate in races, save money and spend it on upgrades or new cars.

The situation with the tracks is even simpler – they all migrated from FlatOut 2. There were few of them before, so you can’t count on fresh impressions in the career. In addition, funny mini-games like darts or poker were removed from the tournaments, replacing them with standard time trials and speedway races.

At the same time, the remake has noticeably lost its drive. The “Catch up” system has disappeared, and now victory has become “fair”. But in reality, it is often more profitable to calmly reach the finish line than to arrange crazy ramming. Physics has been simplified: if earlier you had to fight with the stubborn rear of the car and take into account the slightest differences in transmissions, now cars behave much more obediently. Moreover, garbage on the road has almost no effect on the behavior of cars. In the old parts, any piece of iron could send you into a ditch, and here heavy “tanks” simply crush everything in sight. True, the physics engine sometimes acts up – beams, wheels or logs get stuck in the body, and grass suddenly starts to break through the trunk. Just hello from “Avalon”.

There is also a “raising of the stakes”: in FlatOut 2 there were about five thousand destructible objects on the tracks, and in Ultimate Carnage – already eight thousand. True, most of this “improvement” is endless stacks of tires placed along the roadsides. For those who don’t like to brake before corners, this is even convenient: you cling to the side of the barrier, get nitrous oxide and, as a result, accelerate faster than on the correct trajectory. But all this again simplifies the game, doesn’t it?

To be honest, the career mode here feels like a secondary addition – only the most devoted fans will be able to play it. But the Carnage mode, which seems to promise drive and madness, in fact does not shine with originality either. Under the beautiful name are hidden 36 competitions, divided into four types.

• Stunt – these are the familiar 12 tricks that migrated from the career.
• Beat the Bomb – essentially a reworked Time Trial.
• Carnage race – a regular race, only the reward is given not in the form of money, but in points. They are given for everything: collisions with rivals, destruction of scenery, spectacular jumps or passing checkpoints.
• Deathmatch derby – a familiar derby, but with a couple of “tricks”: several lives, the ability to respawn and temporary bonuses such as infinite nitro, repair or enhanced armor, which last about twenty seconds. So instead of the usual hunt for rivals, there is a real race for bonuses.

The main thing is not to forget that both parts of FlatOut have always won not by the depth of modes, but by pure fun. Especially in multiplayer, where people still happily burn rubber.

Personally, I only once came across a game with another person: I chose a car, pressed “Ready”, said hello in the chat… and in response there was silence. Apparently, the server owner fell asleep, without waiting for guests. As a result, the only thing that can initially drag you in is the fight for leadership in the Carnage table. But even there, boredom quickly sets in: endless farming of points alone tires you out faster than it seems.
