What do you get when you combine the brutal battles of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare with mysterious Eastern magic and season it all with the capabilities of Unreal Engine 4? This is the question that developers from Torn Banner Studios tried to answer by creating Mirage: Arcane Warfare.
After the success of their first online slasher, released in 2012, the studio deservedly received a lot of praise. However, times are changing – what caused delight five years ago no longer guarantees a repeat triumph today. And, unfortunately, this is not the only problem that Mirage faces.

Torn Banner Studio decided not to follow the beaten path and chose an unusual setting for their game — Eastern mythology. Here you will find genies, luxurious palaces, massive turbans, and sparkling curved sabers — as if you have found yourself in a living fairy tale from “A Thousand and One Nights”. It is in this bright and original atmosphere that two opposing sides — Bashrani and Azar — collide.
According to legend, one day the border between the world of people and the kingdom of spirits cracked, and the magic of the genies poured into our world. Someone saw this as an opportunity: merging with magic promised strength and transformation. Others, more cautious, decided not to succumb to temptation, but to study magic in order to keep it under control.

Despite such an intriguing introduction, the game does not have a full-fledged plot — it rather serves as a background for battles. The characters of both factions differ only in the color of their skins and the visual elements of their equipment – there are no deep differences between them.
A whole new Steam experience awaits in a free steam account.
Features of gameplay and modes in Mirage: Arcane Warfare
Mirage: Arcane Warfare stands out from the crowd thanks to its unconventional, almost exotic visual style, which is extremely rare these days. But in terms of game modes, the project follows a familiar path: there is a team deathmatch, and capture the flag, and arena battles.
Forget about ratings, leaderboards and other elements of the eSports race – everything here is tied exclusively to the pleasure of the process itself. Sessions are designed for a maximum of 20 players, but even this number is not always possible to gather, especially in the European region. Therefore, matches are often held in a chamber atmosphere – with a smaller number of participants, but no less passion.

The game features six classes – they are available to both sides of the conflict. Each of them differs not only in appearance, but also in its set of abilities. Each character has six activated skills, but only three can be used in battle at a time. The rest remain in reserve and can be activated if necessary.
The customization system deserves a special mention. Players can change the design of armor, put on or take off a helmet, and also select weapons to their taste. Moreover, weapons are not just a visual feature, but a full-fledged element of gameplay: each “gun” has its own characteristics and fighting style.
Combat system
If you forget about magic for a second and tone down the bright colors, Mirage reminds you of the familiar Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. The combat system here is built around three types of strikes – horizontal, vertical and piercing. Each of them has its own speed, damage and area of effect, so the choice of attack is not just a matter of taste, but the key to winning the fight.
Defense is no less important. Forget about eternal “armor” – you can’t hold the block, like in some other games. Here it works by pressing and lasts a little more than a second, after which the hero becomes vulnerable again. This forces you to keep your ears open and react to every move of the enemy, and not just stand in deep defense.

It’s a pity, but in this regard, Mirage does not offer anything fundamentally new. Moreover, it loses some of the features that made Chivalry memorable. For example, there are no running attacks – they used to be the hallmark of spearmen and added dynamics to the battle.
And not everything is smooth with the arsenal. The difference between, say, a heavy club and a light sabre is not as pronounced as one would like. Both types of weapons seem unwieldy and do not differ much in sensations – swing a club or swing a sabre, the result is about the same: slowly, but painfully.
Problems with Magic Classes
Magic abilities were added to the game to refresh the already familiar combat system. And at first they are really impressive: you have to think quickly, calculate the cooldown of skills and act with caution, and not just mindlessly swing a sword.
However, after a couple of hours it becomes noticeable that the magic system is not fully thought out. Some classes become almost useless in close combat because of it – spells recharge quickly, and it is easier to throw “nukes” at enemies from afar than to risk and engage in hand-to-hand combat.

Different classes suffer from these mechanics in different ways:
-
Magic classes are too vulnerable in close combat and do not survive without support.
-
Hybrid fighters lose the point of close combat, since spells are more effective and safer.
-
Tanks and melee fighters are at a disadvantage because their style is not rewarded in the same way as ranged spells.
There is a downside, too. Magic-focused classes like the Battle Mage are supposed to work from behind their allies, methodically burning enemies from afar. But in practice, these classes are sorely lacking in defense. And in melee, they literally fall apart after a couple of pokes.
As a result, mages are simply not included in parties. No one wants to be the one who depends on the whims of random allies, especially when half of them don’t even notice that they are not playing solo.
Is Mirage: Arcane Warfare Worth Playing in 2025?
Mirage immediately catches the eye with its visual style – bright, saturated colors, rough, but surprisingly expressive landscapes. The game looks lively and juicy, especially in static shots – here we should pay tribute not only to the Unreal Engine 4, but also to the hand of a talented artist who created this atmosphere.
But as soon as the scene comes to life, the magic begins to crumble. The animations are noticeably rough – hits often look awkward, characters hang in the air, as if they forgot about gravity. All this brings back memories of Chivalry – a feeling as if we were back there, only in a new setting. Ironically, if you compare screenshots, the old game sometimes looks even nicer. And Mirage has higher hardware requirements, and the recoil is lower.

To understand why Mirage didn’t take off, it’s enough to look at the balance of pros and cons:
What worked:
-
Colorful and unusual visual style
-
New setting, different from the usual medieval theme
-
Addition of magic skills that could diversify the gameplay
-
Potential for team battles in the spirit of Chivalry
What didn’t work:
-
Weak animation and sloppy development of combat movements
-
Almost complete absence of players just a few days after release
-
The combat system feels secondary and outdated
-
Inflated system requirements with modest graphics
-
The promised support for the Russian language was not implemented at release
However, the issue is not even in the graphics and not in the fact that the combat system causes deja vu. The problem is much deeper – in the absolute emptiness on the servers.
137 people. That’s how many were online in a day from Friday evening, May 26, to Saturday afternoon, the 27th. Only 137 players, just 4 days after the release. This is not even an alarm bell, it’s a fire alarm. Of course, it’s clear that the Torn Banner studio tried to breathe new life into the old mechanics of Chivalry. A new setting, magical abilities, non-standard visuals – all this could potentially work. But alas, the picture does not pull the project along, no matter how nice it is, and the gameplay feels like a step in place.
No one expected Mirage to surpass Overwatch – these are simply incomparable categories. But the fact that even the conditionally free Paladins looks fresher and plays more lively is already an unpleasant signal. Let’s add to this the fact that the developers did not keep their word about supporting the Russian language at the start – and the overall picture becomes completely sad. What’s the bottom line? The only thing that really holds your attention is the familiar and, although dated, still cheerful and fun “combat”. Everything else is an attempt to breathe life into an already dying genre, which, it seems, was not crowned with success.
