Why is CD Projekt RED releasing DLC now?
Grand Theft Auto VI is coming out in November 2026—and many publishers are terrified of that window. A launch of such magnitude could ruin any other release. CD Projekt RED, it seems, has decided not to take any risks. The long-awaited expansion for The Witcher 3 will arrive long before the “big GTA.”

Rumors about a third DLC have been circulating for over a year. While still untitled, it will be the third major expansion for The Witcher 3, following Hearts of Stone (2015) and Blood and Wine (2016). Why is it needed? To fill the narrative gap between the original trilogy and the upcoming The Witcher 4. Plus, it will show the passing of the torch from Geralt to Ciri. The story of the last witcher, it seems, will find a fitting conclusion.
What’s known about the plot of The Witcher 3 DLC
The new expansion will focus on Ciri and will serve as a link between the previous trilogy and the beginning of the new saga. Furthermore, the DLC will kick off the marketing campaign for The Witcher 4. As for the fourth installment itself, its release is expected in the fourth quarter of 2027.
Other CD Projekt RED projects
The studio is also working on several games:
-
The remake of the first Witcher – release in 2028, the team is currently helping with The Witcher 4
-
Project Orion – 2030
-
Project Sirius / Canis Majoris – 2028
-
Project Hadar – 2032
Important Disclaimer
CD Projekt RED itself has not officially confirmed anything. So far, all we have are rumors and insider leaks from an analyst. These should be taken with a cool head. But logic cannot be denied: the third DLC will perfectly tie together the plot threads between The Witcher 3 and The Witcher 4. And it will finally give us more context about how Ciri becomes the new protagonist.
