When SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated was released in 2020, it was a surprise hit, selling over two million copies. THQ Nordic called it a “fantastic success” and quickly realized that SpongeBob fans clearly wanted a sequel. That’s how SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake was born – an unofficial sequel that, while less flashy in name, is every bit as fun as the original.

SpongeBob and Patrick get into another adventure — and, as usual, through their own kind stupidity. It all starts with them meeting a mysterious witch named Cassandra in Bikini Bottom. She gives them a bottle of real mermaid tears and says that with this thing you can make any wish and have it come true right away. Naturally, the friends make the cherished choice without thinking — and everything goes topsy-turvy. The city turns into chaos: buildings disappear somewhere, residents are scattered across different worlds, and aggressive jelly monsters roam the streets. Bob himself seems to have gotten off easy, but Patrick was unlucky — he became… a balloon. Now he constantly hovers next to Bob and accompanies him everywhere — both in cutscenes and in gameplay. It is no longer possible to control Patrick: if in the previous part it was possible to choose from three characters, now we go through the entire adventure exclusively as Sponge.

Bikini Bottom acts as a hub – this is where all the forays into other worlds begin and where we return after each level. Compared to the previous game, the hometown has become much brighter and more colorful – if earlier the developers tried to recreate the visual style of the animated series, now they have added more colors and details. As you progress, it comes to life: characters return, buildings appear, and the city begins to breathe again. The main decoration of the game is the different worlds that our heroes end up in. Each of them is radically different from the others. Here you have a pirate bay, and a Halloween version of Rock Bottom, and Jellyfish Fields in the style of a western. There are seven such zones in total, and each has its own features. Somewhere you need to ride a stone on lava, somewhere – perform tricks on a film set and look for hidden paparazzi.

Of course, not all levels are equally good: for example, the prehistoric zone feels poorly developed, as if it was done at the last moment. But, fortunately, it is not the final one. On average, each world is completed in an hour, and it really does look like a full-fledged episode of the cartoon: everything is so bright, absurd and cheerful, with a bunch of jokes and funny scenes. And what about the costumes! Squidward as an arrogant director, Sandy as a karate girl, Pearl as a princess – there are plenty of references and memes here.

The levels try not to repeat themselves: sometimes you fight, sometimes you solve a problem, sometimes you go down a hill at speed, dodging obstacles. Yes, there are no super-new ideas in the genre here, and sometimes the tasks are frankly outdated – for example, you will be asked to collect a certain number of items in the location (and not just once!) or go around all the doors in Rock Bottom for five candies. But the game constantly throws up something new and fun, so there is no time to get bored. The next scene will definitely have something that will make you smile again.

Cons of Fighting and Leveling in The Cosmic Shake

One of the main things that irritated me in level exploration is the dead ends that you run into not because of mistakes, but because you simply lack some ability. You run around, explore the world, deviate from the main path – suddenly it seems that you have found a secret path! But in the end there is either a door with a lock, or a mechanism that can only be activated if you already have the necessary skill. The result is disappointment. After a couple of such situations, I stopped trying to explore every path: why waste time if you will almost certainly end up at another “plug” again? In the first two zones, I honestly tried to “vacuum” everything in a row, but then gave up – it is still impossible to remember all the places where it is worth returning later. And when the game was already completed, there was no particular desire to return to old worlds – despite the fact that here and there were funny mini-challenges.

In addition, collecting here practically does not affect the gameplay. The main reward for collecting items is additional costumes for SpongeBob. One new outfit is given automatically before the start of each new level, and the rest can be bought for gold doubloons in the main menu. There are plenty of options – from a ghost to Bob in his underwear. They are funny, especially for children, who will surely enjoy dressing up their favorite hero in funny images. But for me, as an adult player, the story costumes were quite enough. Running around and collecting doubloons for the sake of additional outfits is a dubious pleasure. In this regard, The Cosmic Shake is not a classic collectathon, in the spirit of Banjo-Kazooie or old Spyro, where it is interesting to look for every cache and secret. Rather, it is a bright and easy 3D platformer made for fun. The plot here is cheerful, with good humor, and it is the main driving force. Yes, after the finale you can return to old levels and try to “clean” them 100%, because additional activities are unlocked, but without cutscenes and dialogues they don’t feel as lively. Not that it was a minus – the eight hours that I spent in the game gave me a lot of colors, the atmosphere of a real cartoon and even a couple of sincere laughter. And that’s quite enough.

However, towards the end of the game, the combat starts to get tiresome – in particular, the battles with jelly enemies. It is clear that the developers tried to avoid monotony: new types of enemies appear in each world, and SpongeBob gradually gains access to new techniques. For example, he can launch a bubble and temporarily immobilize opponents or perform a blow in the air with a rebound. But fatigue from enemies still accumulates. The reason is simple – their design and mechanics hardly change. By the middle of the game you understand how to fight most of them, and then it turns into a routine.

For example, there is a typical “heavyweight” – a pumped-up jelly monster with a bathtub, which he hits on the ground. He is encountered throughout the second half of the game constantly, in almost every battle. The tactics are like a carbon copy: wait for him to hit, come up, hit him yourself, and repeat. Or another boring variety – a slimy turret, which, having received damage, releases a wave and calls small assistants. Seeing it in each of the seven worlds is a pleasure for an amateur.

But the bosses are a pleasant surprise. Each one is unique, with an interesting design and its own gimmick. Fighting them is really fun, even though they are quite simple and do not pose much of a threat. But the level of difficulty in the game as a whole is simply minimal. Bob has four hearts of health, and even if he dies, nothing terrible happens: the player is instantly resurrected near the nearest checkpoint. These points are generously placed, so you almost never lose progress. No penalties, no loss of doubloons or other resources – the game is as friendly as possible and forgives any mistakes.

Is The Cosmic Shake Worth Playing?

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is a bright and good-natured adventure in the genre of 3D platformer, created primarily for fans of the legendary animated series. The game does not strive to surprise with innovations – and it should not. Its main task is to immerse players in the atmosphere of Bikini Bottom, full of humor, absurdity and nostalgia. It copes with this one hundred percent: the feeling is as if you are watching a new episode, only now you yourself control its course.

The developers transferred the familiar world to the screen with love and attention to detail. It has everything that fans appreciate: from familiar characters with their signature lines to surreal worlds created under the influence of the desires and fantasies of the main characters.

What was especially pleasing:

• A lively and recognizable Bikini Bottom. The locations in the game are made with respect for the original – streets, houses, characters, everything looks like in the cartoon, only more voluminous. Periodically, you catch yourself thinking that it is simply pleasant to walk around the city and recognize your favorite places.
• The worlds are full of diversity. Each new level is a separate universe inspired by different genres: western, horror, pirate theme, etc. All of them differ not only visually, but also in game mechanics and tasks.
• The bosses are not difficult, but fun. Battles with them do not require super skills, but each such battle is designed with humor and imagination – children and fans will definitely appreciate it.
• Costumes for every taste. During the adventure, you can dress SpongeBob in dozens of funny outfits – from a pizza man to a knight. Visually, this adds fun and motivation to explore the levels.
• The humor is in place. The signature absurdity, weird jokes and parody scenes are all preserved. The game seems to continue the traditions of the cartoon, and not just be inspired by it.

What didn’t live up to:

• The primitive world is a miss. One of the levels, made in the style of the Stone Age, feels empty and boring. Its visual presentation is dull, and the gameplay is not catchy.
• Exploration is limited. During the first playthrough, not all abilities are available, which is why returning to old levels for new secrets becomes more of a duty than a pleasure.
• Repetitions towards the end. The enemies you meet closer to the end are no longer surprising – the same types of monsters, without new techniques or behavior. This is a little tiring and reduces the degree of enthusiasm.

The Cosmic Shake isn’t a platformer revolution, but it’s a warm, funny, and heartfelt game that’s a treat for anyone who grew up with SpongeBob. It’s not perfect, but its charm and respect for the source material are hard to miss.
