Hardwood in Windrose is more valuable than regular planks. Without this layer, you won’t be able to upgrade your weapons or strengthen your ship. And if you’re constantly being sunk by Blackbeard’s ships at sea, then delaying your upgrades is simply foolish. Let’s figure out where to get this resource and how to put it to use.

Where to find hardwood in Windrose?
The type of wood we need drops from Davi-Davi Trees. You should look for them in the Foothills region. These trees are easily recognized by their twisted trunks—they have a much more “savannah” appearance than their Coastal Jungle counterparts. This is clearly visible (see screenshot).

But there’s a catch. If you simply chop down such a tree, you’ll only get regular wood. The hardwood is hidden in the stump. Approach the stump with a Copper Axe (or a higher-grade tool) and confidently strike it down—that’s when the coveted resource will drop. You’ll likely also get some bark (useful for tanning leather).
You’ll have to run around the Foothills—trees don’t grow everywhere. But once you find one grove, there will be a dozen more nearby. Farming can be a joy—establish a cycle. Just a tip: set up camp nearby. When your inventory gets full, dump your junk. Wolves will come running—there’ll be a place to fight them off.
If you haven’t unlocked the Foothills yet, don’t worry. Access to the region and its resource menu is granted after completing the main quest “Revenge Is Served Cold.” So, master the story first, and then chop down trees to your heart’s content.
What to use hardwood for in Windrose?
This resource is needed for two things: better armor and ship reinforcements. Without it, you’ll be stuck at low levels.

Take, for example, a level 6 Sturdy Halberd. Crafting it in a weapon workshop requires four hardwood, plus seven iron ingots and three blacksmith flux. A small thing, but a nice touch.
Ship cannons are where this resource really comes in handy. Planning to equip your ship with 24-pounder or 36-pounder cannons? Get ready to stockpile a decent amount of hardwood in the ship workshop. It’s a similar story with 12-pounder cannons for a level 6 ship—it requires ten iron ingots and four timbers, which are crafted from our material.
Where can I get timber? The timber recipe is unlocked as you progress through the game. From there, it’s simple: upgrade your regular crafting table to level 3 and craft accordingly. One timber requires three hardwoods.
Important: to upgrade your workbench to level 3, first build a log sawing stand and a toolbox. You can’t do without them.
