Gunpowder is a scarce commodity in Windrose. It’s needed for ammo and crafting, but it’s not just lying around. Sure, you can find a few pinches around the map, but that’s a drop in the bucket. A more reliable way is to craft it. However, you’ll have to spend a bit of time gathering and leveling up. I’ll explain how to consistently obtain gunpowder.

Method One: Crafting with a Millstone

Crafting gunpowder millstone

The most systematic method is to craft gunpowder yourself. This requires a Millstone and two resources: ash and sulfur. However, there’s a catch: access to these resources is only unlocked once you reach the Foothills region. That’s after the Coastal Jungle. Sulfur is essential—mining it requires an iron pickaxe or access to iron ore. The Millstone itself is unlocked by finding corn. Look for it in the Foothills, usually at points of interest like the Ancient Village. Find the corn and you’ve unlocked the millstone recipe. The rest is a matter of technique: collect ash and sulfur, turn the millstone on, and obtain gunpowder. We’ve covered the entire process with pictures in a separate guide, but here’s the gist.

Method two: Search enemy supplies

Enemy camp supply cache

If crafting is too early or you’re too lazy, you can limit yourself to looting enemy camps. Gunpowder can sometimes be found in supply caches—they glow like chests, but they’re easy to miss. After all, you don’t need to pick up every crate to clear a marker on the map. Therefore, I recommend thoroughly searching the camp from top to bottom after the battle. You’ll also be able to pick up other resources—they’ll be useful.

Ultimately, the choice is yours: either a quick search through chests (but they don’t have much gunpowder), or a full-fledged production chain with a millstone and access to the Foothills. By the way, once you’ve figured out how to deal with ammunition, I recommend checking out the guides on increasing your backpack and stamina—these upgrades really make life easier in combat.
