Here’s how to get fertile soil in Windrose and start farming—it’s essential if you plan to get serious about farming.
Having your own farm in the Foothills is handy: food is always on hand, and the bonuses it provides are a huge help when clearing enemy camps or on long raids. And for farming beds (a special building for most crops), fertile soil is precisely what you need.

Where to find fertile soil in Windrose Foothills?
The resource is found at the Ancient Farm and Ancient Village points of interest—both in the Foothills region. If you’re still stuck in the Coastal Jungle, first reach the new biome. Other resources will unlock there, but for now, we’re interested in soil.

Fertile soil is usually hidden in farmland around ruined buildings. It resembles clay—easy to spot if you know what to look for. It can be harvested with a copper pickaxe (or better). So, before your expedition, be sure to craft it at a workbench.

What to consider when collecting fertile soil?
One garden bed requires 5 units of soil, so stock up on it right away. And be careful: wolves and aggressive goats often roam these points of interest. Don’t get eaten in the process.
Once you’ve collected some resources, an entry in the “Foothill Discoveries” section will unlock. After that, new recipes will become available in the “Farming” tab of the construction menu.
How to create garden beds and start a farm in Windrose?
Once you’ve collected fertile soil and unlocked the recipes in the construction menu, you can get down to business. Go to “Construction,” select the “Farming” tab, and start laying out garden beds. It’s simple.

By the way, while you were wandering around the Coastal Jungle, you probably picked up some seeds. But here’s the catch: in the “Farming” section, you can only plant bushes, palms, and ficus trees directly into the ground. For everything else, you’ll need special garden beds.
Got seeds? Great. You can plant any crops you find using the same menu—select “Farming” and place the seedlings. They grow slowly, taking about 70 minutes of real time. No watering, weeding, or fertilizing is required—just wait and harvest. You can then replant them.
Several plants can fit in a single garden bed. To make things easier later, plant them close together.
The main advantage: you’ll no longer have to run around the map looking for flax, tomatoes, or bananas. All of these things are now growing right here.
Flax as a Priority Crop: Why It’s Worth Starting Plantations Right Away
What should you focus on first? We recommend focusing on flax. Flax is made from it, and towards the mid-game, you’ll need a lot of it. Farming flax in the open world is a real pleasure, so it’s best to start plantations right away. You can work on food crops when you have leftovers, considering recipes and food bonuses.
Which crops need to be grown in a garden, and where can I find seeds?
If you don’t have seeds, gather wild plants on the Windrose Islands. Sooner or later, they’ll randomly drop the seeds you need.
A complete list of what you can’t grow without a garden:
-
Sweet potato – in the Coastal Jungle
-
Cayenne pepper – also in the jungle
-
Banana – Coastal Jungle and Foothills
-
Aloe – only in the Foothills
-
Tomato – Foothills
-
Flax – also in the Foothills
Some crops (such as shrubs) grow just fine without a garden bed, but the ones listed above require one. Keep that in mind.
