Fortnite Save the World is finally free, and hordes of newcomers have rushed into the PvE mode. And then they hit the main stumbling block of the early game: Survivors. The system is confusing, poorly explained, and mistakes are costly. We’ll break it down—how to unlock them, where to invest Human XP, and how to assemble a squad that won’t make you blush at high levels.

Where to get Survivors in Fortnite STW: 3 ways

There are several ways, and most of them don’t require any hassle. Survivors pour in from tasks and missions—they’re your main passive source. Just play, and they’ll come naturally.

Then comes the element of luck. Llamas. You open them and get a random set. Random, but you can’t do without them.

And the third option is the most reliable if you need a specific character: the Gold Exchange Shop. However, it doesn’t open right away—only after the fifth Storm Shield defense. There, in the “Goods” section, you can purchase Survivors directly. No lottery required.

Rarity varies from Common to Mythic. But here’s an important detail: only Squad Leaders can reach Mythic rank. Regular Survivors don’t reach this rank. Remember this—it’ll come in handy when you start building your perfect team.

Leveling Up Survivors and Human Experience: Where to Spend

Human Experience is the main resource for leveling up. It’s not just for Survivors, by the way. Heroes and Defenders also use it. It’s a shared system.

Where does it come from? From missions and tasks. Plus, Llamas sometimes give you a little extra. And it all accumulates automatically—you don’t even have to think about it. Just play, and the experience accumulates. Then, go to the Survivors menu and watch your levels increase.

No complex crafting, no rare ingredients. The more missions you complete, the higher your level. It’s that simple.

What’s important: experience is spent automatically on everyone, but you set the priority. If you want to get the most out of your squad, prioritize your Squad Leaders first, then the rest. And don’t spread yourself too thin. Focus on one squad—you’ll get more out of it at the start.

Squads in Save the World: Leader Slots and Types

Survivors in Save the World aren’t just cards in your collection. They’re your combat units as you level them up. To manage them, go to the “Command Post” menu in your Home Base, then the “Squads” section. Sound complicated? It’s actually simpler than it seems.

Each squad has eight slots. One for the Leader, the other seven for regular survivors. At first, you’ll only be given one squad type and a couple of slots. But as you progress, more slots become available. New slots open up as you level up.

Here’s an important point: you can put anyone in the regular slots. But only characters with a crown icon can be assigned to the leader slots. And the leader’s profession must match the squad type. Put a Doctor in an Assault Squad—the bonus won’t work. The system is strict.

Survivor squads aren’t just a passive bonus. They directly increase your Fortitude, Offense, Resistance, and Tech stats. Each squad works differently, depending on its type and who you’ve assigned as its leader.

Where do we even begin? Let’s look at each F.O.R.T. branch and the squads that provide the greatest boost.

Fortification (Fortitude) — responsible for health and its regeneration. Each point provides +1% to both stats. Which squads excel at this branch? The Training Team and the Ambulance Squad. Nothing complicated.

Offense — this is all about weapon damage. Each point again provides +1%. The best choices are the Melee Squad and Assault Squad Alpha. If you want to pack a punch, level them up.

Resistance — shield and its regeneration speed. Same principle: +1% per point. Reconnaissance Squad and Gadgetologists are your main allies.

Tech — the most powerful branch. Damage from traps, abilities, gadgets, and healing speed. All at +1% per point. Strategist Headquarters and Engineering Corps will give the most.

But that’s not all. Each survivor also provides a set bonus. To activate it, you need to gather several survivors with the same bonus in a squad. A simple mechanic, but many ignore it.

  • Health (Fortification): +5% Health. Requires 2 matches.
  • Shield (Evolve): +5% Shield. Requires 2 matches.
  • Shield Regeneration (Evolve): +5% Shield Regeneration Speed. Requires 2 matches.
  • Ranged Damage (Experience): +5% Ranged Weapon Damage. Requires 3 matches.
  • Melee Damage (Experience): +5% Melee Damage. Requires 3 matches.
  • Ability Damage (Tech): +5% Ability Damage. Requires 3 matches.
  • Trap Damage (Tech): +5% Trap Damage. Requires 3 matches.
  • Trap Durability (Tech): +8% Durability. Requires 2 matches.

Traps or a Cannon: F.O.R.T. Stat Balance

F.O.R.T. is designed in such a way that leveling up uniformly results in mediocrity across the board. The choice is binary: either you’re a mainstay with a cannon at the ready, or an architect of deadly corridors. OFFENSE boosts the damage of your weapons: shotgun, sniper, melee. TECH handles everything else—traps, hero abilities, gadgets. Spending points on both branches simultaneously means failing to level up either to a usable state. And on SSD-10 with Twinpicks, this mistake really starts to sting.

OFFENSE build for solo play in STW

The emphasis is on Assault Squad Alpha and Melee Squad. Traps here act as a fence, not a killer—all the dirty work is yours. The basic layout is minimalist: the entrance door plus the overhead electric floor in the killbox, then the gun does the work. Solo, this build can easily clear zones up to level 82—provided the weapon is leveled to 130 PL and perks are geared for headshots. But “Save the Survivors” and “Meeting Attacks” become torture: mobs come in waves from four sides, and you physically can’t deal damage to everyone. Hands aren’t traps; they get tired.

TECH build for defense and group play

Priority: Strategist Headquarters and Engineering Corps. Here, traps carry 80% of the mission, with the player merely mopping up those who slip through the net. The electric field, wall spikes, and launchers—the whole setup works autonomously. In “Hive Attack” or “Build a Radar,” a TECH build is absolutely essential: while you’re running around the map collecting components, the perimeter holds itself. The downside is that solo crafting missions drag on. The gun’s firepower is weaker, and clearing the location is a slow process.

Prioritize Stat Leveling to PL 40

Before Power Level 40, forget about balance—level up what you have. Every survivor above level 10 provides a noticeable boost to F.O.R.T., and splitting points equally between Alpha and the Strategist Headquarters is a classic rookie mistake. Choose one direction that suits your style:

If you love micromanagement and kilometer-long trap labyrinths, push TECH to 400+, and improve OFFENSE later.

If you’re a gunslinger and traps are a crutch, push OFFENSE to 350, and keep TECH to a minimum for the sake of your hero’s ability damage.

If you’re in a party with friends, assign roles in advance. A combination of two TECH builds in a group stacks trap damage to +120% of the base. That’s an impressive number.

After PL 70, you can already level up your tree. By this point, your collection will have accumulated epics and legendaries that will cover both sides without any noticeable stat drops.

Survivor Personality Types: +25% Squad Bonus

There’s another nuance here that many people miss: Personality Types.

Look. The squad leader is the first slot. Each leader has their personality type listed in their description. If you start adding survivors with the same type to your squad, you’ll get a nice bonus to your squad’s strength. The maximum is 25% when all seven people match. Pretty cool, right?

At the start of the game, this can be quite difficult. You simply don’t have the survivors you need, and those you do have are often of low rarity. And here’s the important point: don’t get hung up on personality types if it means you’ll end up with weak characters in your squad. This will seriously lower your F.O.R.T. stats. — Do you really need it?

As you level up, you’ll gain new survivors, and the task will gradually become less overwhelming. The key is to take your time. First, fill your squad with strong units, and then adjust the personality types to suit your leader.
