When playing with these guys, I always feel lightness and endless jokes. But the game itself did not please me.

I began to doubt my feelings from Phasmophobia. It can not be that the game is so bad – so many people loved it! I decided to figure out what was wrong with it. The first thing I did was go to Reddit. If anyone is going to agree with me that Phasmophobia is terrible, it’s the players there. And if anyone can convince me otherwise, it’s them. From my research, I realized that Phasmophobia is a game that requires learning. You need to recognize the signs of a haunting; the more you play, the more you begin to understand what’s going on. On the second night, I tried playing alone again, but the results were similar. I thought I had gotten better at the game, but I still couldn’t complete any of the hauntings. Although I did get better at using other tools, like the D.O.T.S. projector, to detect ghost activity.

Playing Phasmophobia in VR is a completely different experience. I started by playing through half of the tutorial level in normal mode and was underwhelmed by the awkward controls and clunky gameplay. But once I put on the VR headset, the experience was the same in terms of controls, but Phasmophobia became much more scary, even in the tutorial mode. Seeing these fuzzy spirits hanging around the room, detected by the matrix tool, was truly frightening.

I completed the first level alone, but I wasn’t quite sure what I was supposed to do. This is clearly a community-focused game and doesn’t explain how to play well. I was just wandering around empty rooms, nothing was happening, I got bored, and decided to wait to play with friends. That’s when Phasmophobia really came to life for me.

Playing with friends in VR, Phasmophobia becomes a real comedy. The feeling of wandering around unfamiliar spaces that, while not cutting-edge, are well-crafted enough to distract from reality is impressive. The feeling of “What’s waiting for me around the next corner or in the basement?” adds a real sense of creepiness to the process, even when you’re having fun with friends.

Phasmophobia: Horror and VR Glitches

After my first encounter with the game, I sent a message to my friends saying something along the lines of “too clunky to be scary,” but that’s not quite true. When a ghost is sprinting down the stairs and heading straight for you while everyone starts screaming at the same time, the only way to describe the experience is “scary.” In fact, I was far more scared than my friends playing in normal mode. That said, the dread is there, and the penalty for dying to a ghost in VR is pure terror. This is something that will haunt me for weeks. I think the key is to play in VR if you can, but definitely with friends.

I wouldn’t mind playing Phasmophobia again, but I’d need to convince at least three friends to get a full team. I also think that each session depends a lot on what kind of group you have – to enjoy the game you need either good comrades or funny people with whom you can laugh at all the difficulties.
