At Fan Fest 2026, Square Enix officially announced the next major expansion for Final Fantasy 14, Evercold. Release is tentatively scheduled for January 2027, and version 8.0 will kick off the new story arc, The Godless Realms Saga. Preparations for the transition will begin next week with the release of patch 7.5, which will conclude the current cycle’s story arc.
The previous expansion, Dawntrail, was released almost two years ago and, to put it mildly, failed to live up to expectations. After the magnificent Endwalker, the bar was set too high, and Dawntrail noticeably sank: players criticized both its weak content and its overall aesthetic. Against this backdrop, the announcement of Evercold seems like an attempt to regain trust.
FFXIV director and producer Naoki Yoshida revealed details of the new direction. The heroes will travel to Shard 4, a world slowly dying from the encroaching ice. However, the developers aren’t planning on freezing everything to the point of dreary monotony. Locations announced include a settlement of sentient felines, castles with dragons, and unique aetherites. Evercold looks set to surprise with its variety.
Gameplay is also in for major changes. Daily roulettes are a thing of the past, with a focus on a weekly format. Content is now divided into seasons, with every two patches forming one seasonal block. The main change is the transfer of the maximum item level from the main class to alternative professions. Changing roles for raids will be much easier and more flexible.
The user interface will be completely redesigned, and customization will reach a new level. A color palette will be added for eyes, hair, and skin, along with the ability to layer makeup and hide individual armor elements. PvE enthusiasts will also be treated to a third difficulty level for 8-player raids—an intermediate level between normal and hard modes. Matchmaking within your region will also be added, with a focus on comfortable ping and more dynamic matchmaking.
The exact release date hasn’t been announced yet—Square Enix has narrowed it down to January 2027. Apparently, details and possibly gameplay demonstrations can be expected at the next stages of Fan Fest 2026. Will Evercold be able to wash away the bad blood left by Dawntrail? There’s intrigue, to say the least.
