Over the past 24 hours, the gaming industry has once again reminded us how lively it is — and at the same time unstable. While some projects are rapidly losing their audience, others are gathering millions of players, and developers themselves are increasingly wondering whether it’s worth staying in the profession at all. April 16 turned out to be a day where anxiety and hope literally go side by side.

ARC Raiders is falling, the industry is burning out, but there is some good news

The story of the ARC Raiders now looks like an alarming case that many are watching. Since the beginning of 2026, online games on Steam have dropped by about 80%, and it is already difficult to attribute this to the usual “post-release decline.” The players don’t just leave — they openly say that the project lacks content and a clear direction. The community is waiting for concrete actions from Embark Studios, otherwise it will be extremely difficult to regain interest.

And here the situation becomes broader than just one game. According to experts, almost half of developers are thinking about changing their profession. And this no longer sounds like emotions, but as a signal of an accumulated crisis. An industry that has always seemed like a “dream job” is gradually showing the downside.

In short, the pressure consists of several factors:

  • constant overwork and burnout
  • instability of projects and studios
  • high competition and expectations of players
  • pressure from publishers and deadlines

And all this directly affects which games we get in the end.

At the same time, technical problems that were not so obvious before are also emerging. The Xbox Series S has suddenly become a limitation even for the relatively undemanding Replaced. This again raises an uncomfortable question: how long will developers be able to adapt to weaker hardware without losing quality.

There were also some awkward moments. The developers of Crimson Desert made a mistake in describing the key mechanics, and the players quickly noticed it. In an era when every detail is sorted out by personnel, such things instantly turn into a discussion — and hurt trust.

But the industry would not be an industry without contrasts. Wuthering Waves, for example, went against the trend — abandoned Unreal Engine 5, but at the same time only won in the visual and even received recognition at The Game Awards 2025. Sometimes the risk really pays off.

Meanwhile, Ubisoft continues to bend its line: the company has shown the capabilities of the Anvil engine, which will become the basis for future parts of Assassin’s Creed. This is a hint that the technology race within the industry is only intensifying.

There were scandals too. The situation around the Naraka: Bladepoint event quickly went beyond the usual criticism and turned into a full-fledged discussion. Such stories are increasingly showing that today it is important not only to make a game, but also to communicate with the audience correctly.

On a more positive note, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has reached the 12 million player mark. This is the case when everything works out: a recognizable universe, clear gameplay, and proper timing.

At the same time, the developers of No Man’s Sky talked about the difficulties of adapting the game to the Steam Deck and the future Switch 2. Behind the words “optimization” there is a huge amount of work here — and this is a good example of how much effort it takes to ensure that the game just works stably.

Well, the icing on the cake is the PlayStation 6 rumor. If the information is confirmed, the console will be backward compatible with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. For players, this means a simple thing: you don’t have to rebuild the game library.

As a result, the day turned out to be very revealing. On the one hand, the decline of online, developer fatigue and technical limitations. On the other hand, there are great successes, strong projects and hope for development. The industry seems to be at a crossroads right now, and it’s days like this that best show it.
