Neil Druckmann has unequivocally hinted at the continuation of the iconic The Last of Us franchise — Naughty Dog’s creative director has talked about “future stops” in history, launching a powerful wave of fan hype. A triquel is—apparently—inevitable.

The Last of Us Part 3 and Neil Druckmann’s post — analysis of hints

It seems to be an ordinary nostalgic tweet — and suddenly there is such an explosion in the information field. Druckmann went to sort out the old junk in the garage — he unearthed the very first concept art from 2003 there – and decided to share his find with subscribers. Those dusty sketches show Joel and Ellie in their original form, when the game designer was just pitching the idea of a tough guy and a teenage girl in a ruined America to the bosses. Is there anything unusual? No matter how it was, the intrigue was at the very end.

At the end of the touching signature, did the developer blurt it out — or did he just throw it in? — the most transparent teaser. He thanked the audience for their support, singling out “the few stops that are still ahead on the road.” Fans immediately put two and two together — and Reddit instantly boiled over with theories. You can’t tell by coincidences.

In general, the situation around the series seems a little paradoxical — there are only two games in the main line, and the title’s status is truly grandiose. The hit of the same name from HBO only added fuel to the fire — the television adaptation dragged millions of new people into the franchise. Plus, don’t forget about the phenomenal success of the sequel — The Last of Us Part II, released in 2020, literally swept away competitors, collecting more than 300 “Game of the Year” awards. An absolute record for its time.

It would seem — forge the iron! But Naughty Dog is now completely immersed in a new IP — the mysterious Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. The project sounds ambitious, no doubt about it, but it’s a wild commercial risk. The full-fledged third part of Ellie’s adventures will become a legal money printing machine for the PlayStation Corporation.

Given the long production cycles of modern AAA blockbusters, the release of the trilogy finale on the current generation of consoles is highly questionable. If the studio is just groping for a concept (or keeping it a closely guarded secret), a full—fledged launch will surely go to PlayStation 6 – and this is a completely logical outcome.

And if the release really goes to the next generation of consoles, it fits perfectly into that tricky behavioral game that the creators have been playing with the audience for years.

Timeline of rumors about The Last of Us Part 3 by Naughty Dog

Let’s be honest — the talks about the third part didn’t start yesterday. The triquel has been in the air for a long time and tightly: this HYPE is competently fueled by the mysterious phrases of Drakmann, then by rare insights from Naughty Dog itself. And after The Last of Us Part II hit the industrial jackpot, and the HBO television adaptation broke the charts, the cult status of the franchise flew somewhere into the stratosphere. At the same time, the game designer himself always laid himself a straw. He never promised to release the game “here and now,” but he categorically refused to bury the series.

The evolution of these teasers is generally a separate art form. At first, we heard the usual excuses in the style of “this story can still go on.” Then the rhetoric changed to a more substantive one — the author bluntly stated that he had draft ideas for a new dramatic arc, it only remained to put them together. And then came the cold shower. The studio switched to a completely new IP, while simultaneously expanding the TLOU universe through other media formats. And here lies the most important marker: if a publisher puts the development of a full—fledged game on pause, but continues to aggressively pump the brand itself, the project is not dead, it is just waiting for its ideal window.

Unsurprisingly, the hardcore community is now dissecting every “random” remark of Druckmann under a magnifying glass. In the context of The Last of Us Part 3, it is the tone that is important — loud press releases are not needed here. If the author mentions the “road”, “remaining stops” or unclosed gestalts of the characters, the fan base instantly reads it as a soft warm-up. And, admittedly, for this particular series, such mysticism works many times more effectively than a frontal announcement. TLOU has always been a master at playing on understatement.

We put the whole puzzle together and get a very pragmatic picture. The third part definitely exists as a logical development of the flagship brand (at least at the level of a business concept) – even if it does not yet have a public date or active production status. This is a classic “radio silence zone” for Naughty Dog. First, these guys verify the meanings, then slowly assemble the core of the game — and only then give the official green light.

By the way, a funny detail for hardcore fans is that when Druckmann was just coming up with this gloomy post—apocalypse, the main non-obvious reference was the vibe of the cult anime “Cowboy Bebop”. There, too, in the center of the plot was the complex chemistry between the most dissimilar characters — and this scenario trope worked perfectly. Will this magic work a third time? Definitely, the only question is how many years we will have to sit in standby mode.
