CD Projekt Will Pause The Witcher 4 Development Over Console Issues - Image 1

Poor performance on a single console could bring development of The Witcher 4 to a temporary halt—and CD Projekt RED believes that is a reasonable price to pay for a stable launch. The studio no longer wants to build a game primarily for powerful PCs and then rush to adapt the finished project for less capable hardware.

This does not mean that The Witcher 4 could be frozen for months or that production is about to stop entirely. Under the new approach, any serious issue discovered on one of the target platforms receives the highest priority. Related work will not move forward until the team finds a solution, preventing technical debt from accumulating.

According to CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski, the current version of the game already runs on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. This allows the studio to monitor performance throughout the entire production cycle instead of waiting until the final months before launch. Xbox Series S was not specifically mentioned, so it is still too early to judge the state of the version for Microsoft’s less powerful console.

The Witcher 4 Optimization Began Long Before Release

The revised development process is directly connected to the troubled launch of Cyberpunk 2077. At the time, PC remained the studio’s primary platform, while adapting the game for consoles was treated as a relatively straightforward task. The assumption was that lowering the graphics settings would be enough to achieve acceptable performance. In practice, that approach failed, particularly on the base PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

CD Projekt RED is following the opposite strategy with The Witcher 4. The game is expected to run properly on its target consoles during the early stages of production, not after most of the project has already been completed. The switch from the studio’s proprietary REDengine to Unreal Engine 5 should also make it easier to test builds and identify platform-specific issues.

For players, this means that performance and the scale of the game world are now being developed together. If a mechanic, location, or visual technology places an unacceptable load on console hardware, the team will have to address it immediately instead of leaving the problem for the final optimization phase.

Could the New Approach Delay The Witcher 4?

This system may slow down individual stages of production. Hundreds of developers cannot continue building on top of a core technology that is already causing serious problems. However, fixing issues as they appear should reduce the risk of larger delays closer to release, when changes to one system can affect dozens of others.

The Witcher 4 still has no confirmed release date. CD Projekt RED has only stated that the game will not arrive in 2026. There is therefore no reason to connect the new development process with a delay at this stage—the studio has described an internal production principle, not announced an ongoing technical crisis.

The main takeaway for players is simple: CD Projekt RED is not promising a problem-free development cycle, but it intends to resolve major issues before they begin to pile up. The true effectiveness of this strategy will be revealed by the final console versions of The Witcher 4, not by technological demonstrations.
