Craftopia is like an experiment at the intersection of genres. What happens if you mix RPG hunting, survival and resource extraction, action and crafting, and add a pinch of madness and freedom? Will something great come out of this chaos- or is this just another “Frankenstein” from the games?

The first thing that catches your eye when you start the game is the character editor. It evokes mixed feelings: it seems to be there, but the possibilities are frankly few. The customization system looks modest, and if you are used to spend hours adjusting the smallest details of your appearance, then you will be slightly disappointed. However, there were some funny moments — for example, no one bothers to create a fragile girl with the wrinkled face of an old man. It’s absurd, but fun — it has its charm and a hint of self-irony on the part of the developers.

At this stage, we are offered a limited choice. You can choose the character’s gender, face type, hairstyle, hair color, and eyes. Everything is quite minimalistic — there are no detailed settings for facial expressions, physique or accessories. However, for an early version of the game, this is excusable: you create a hero in a couple of minutes and are ready for an adventure.

And so, when it seems that a familiar beginning awaits ahead, the game suddenly reverses expectations. After completing the character setup, we are greeted by a short but atmospheric video: The Earth is destroyed, humanity is on the verge of extinction, and our hero miraculously gets a second chance. No one explains why you were awarded this miracle, but the intrigue persists.

The next frame takes us into a completely different world. This is a typical isekai scenario – reincarnation in a new dimension full of mysteries and dangers. However, there is one peculiarity here: the civilization of this world is stuck somewhere between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. There is almost no technology, magic is felt in the air, and instead of skyscrapers there are stone fortresses and villages where life goes against our usual understanding of progress.

And here we are standing in the middle of this strange world, unarmed, confused, but with a new chance to start all over again. What awaits next: the struggle for survival, becoming a hero or the path of the ruler? It all depends on you.

Evolution, Crafting, and Survival: how does the gameplay and learning work in the game?

When the plot ends abruptly, you suddenly find yourself alone in the middle of a huge sandbox — as if someone took off your insurance and said, “Well, can you handle it?” From this moment, real survival begins, something like Minecraft, only with its own character and rules. At the very beginning, the game still gently guides you by the hand, tells you: “get this”, “create that”. But by the second epoch it becomes clear that you are on your own. Hints thin out, turning into vague hints, and quests look more like notes in the margins: they seem to be there, but they don’t do much good.

Sometimes it seems that the localization itself is the problem — the wording is too general, as if the translation was done hastily. You will have to choose between English, Chinese and Japanese — and put up with the fact that some of the meaning is lost somewhere between the lines.

The main idea of the game is simple and honest — create to survive and move forward. Crafting here is not just the mechanics, but the very essence of existence. Every new device, every detail or material brings you closer to the next era. And there’s something of Spore about it—the same thirst for progress when you build, invent, and watch your world change, even if not the whole one, but only your own corner.

But here’s the strange thing: you move into a new era, you get access to new opportunities, and the world around you remains the same, as if frozen in anticipation. This is not an evolution in the usual sense, but rather an expansion of the boundaries of your creativity. Perhaps the developers will add dynamics later, but now it’s just a game about the path, not about the result.

To move into a new era, you need to get important resources — the key materials of your time — and sacrifice them to the altar. It sounds epic, but it actually resembles a calm ritual.: You realize that you’ve done everything you could, and now you’re ready to move on.

But then the real chaos begins. Remember when I said that the game explains less and less? So, the purest “pixel-hunting” begins with the Renaissance. And the first mystery that everyone will face is where to get those damn batteries. There’s a hint, but it’s so vague that it seems the developers specifically decided to check how attentive you are.

And at that moment, you find yourself thinking: yes, sometimes the game is annoying, but that’s what makes it alive. You don’t just complete tasks — you really learn how to survive. And maybe not everything is perfect, but that’s exactly what her charm is.

All types of dungeons and challenges in Craftopia

When everything has been studied inside and out, every blade of grass has been cut down, and the starting island has not been of interest for a long time, it’s time to move on. Portals and dungeons open up new horizons for the player, albeit not too diverse.

There are few worlds here, and the differences between them are not so significant — rather atmospheric. There are only four biomes: a dense forest, a merciless desert, a dank permafrost and a dangerous fiery valley, which in fact is a lonely volcano with a small surrounding area. The most impressive, without a doubt, are the desert and the volcano. Tornadoes are raging in the desert, and you can risk jumping into the mouth of a volcano — the reward for courage is quite tangible there. It can be seen that the developers are still only testing ideas and watching the reaction of the community: they are trying, looking for a balance, “feeling” the audience.

Of course, each biome has dungeons — a separate layer of content and, frankly, a way to “check out” a bit. After all, sometimes there is something too valuable in the chests for your current progress: a golden pickaxe when you are still living in the Stone Age, or even a lightsaber, as if you stepped out of the pages of Star Wars.

The dungeons are divided into five types — from the banal to the really curious:

1. Classic stripping.
   The most common option is to destroy all the enemies on the way and meet the boss in the final. There are few difficulties here — even with your bare hands you can win if you have enough patience. So far, there is only one boss in the game, and he will not cause any serious problems.
2. Time trial.
   A minute and a half, a large room, booster plates, and you’re at the finish line. It’s simple, short and, alas, not too exciting.
3. Accuracy check.
   You need to manage to knock down the balloons in several halls. They are motionless, there is plenty of time — the test is more like a warm-up.
4. “Try to survive” mode.
   That’s where the fun begins! This is a kind of obstacle course where there are no enemies, but instead there are cunningly placed boosters ready to send you straight into the lava. There is already a challenge here, and therefore it becomes more interesting to play.
5. “Is there a dead end here? Well, I’m off!”
   Such a dungeon is rare, but it will be remembered for a long time. A charming 2D girl greets you at the entrance, says a couple of phrases and opens the gate. Beyond them is a corridor ending in a wall. The catch is simple: if you look up, you’ll notice the way to the chests. The only problem is that neither a glider nor rock climbing will help — endurance is sorely lacking. There is only one solution: remember 2017 and act according to the precepts of the good old Fortnite – “let it look strange, but it works.”

Mechanisms, Magic, and Hero development

Automation, mechanisms, pipelines… no, it’s not about the factory or Linux! Although, who knows — in this game you can really build an empire of mechanisms. The developers got down to business with their hearts and already at the start added a lot of tools for automation, experiments and just fun follies. Do you want to build a full-fledged factory? No problem. Create an elaborate trap for the enemies? Why not? There’s always something to do in this world, from engineering experiments to magical research.

Battles here are rewarded not only with loot and new levels, but also with valuable skill points. They can be divided into five branches of development, each with its own logic and character. They have not been fully implemented yet, but they already give room for creativity.

1. The character’s branch is all about personal development: double jumping, dodging, enhanced defense, shortened skill cooldown time, and other improvements that make the hero faster and more resilient.
2. The fighter branch focuses on martial arts. Here you can develop the mastery of two-handed weapons, combo attacks and techniques that turn each fight into a stylish fencing show.
3. The magic branch is for those who love miracles. It’s not just suitable for combat: for example, you can use a water spell to fill buckets if there’s no spring nearby. It is a flexible system that combines combat and utilitarian magic.
4. The everyday branch sounds strange, but in fact it almost repeats the character one, only with a different bias. Its purpose is to increase the convenience of everyday activities in the game.
5. The chip branch is a set of unusual but pleasant little things that are optional, but make the gameplay more interesting and diverse.

Why is this all reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda? Because the visual style and atmosphere of the game seem to pay homage to the legendary series. The same soft colors, magical setting, familiar intonation of adventure — but at the same time, the project goes its own way and finds something to surprise even a sophisticated player.

Yes, the game is not perfect yet. It is still “raw”, but it already holds 15-20 thousand online players, with peaks of up to 30 thousand and 84% positive reviews on Steam. And this is despite the fact that the developers are literally living their project: over the past week they have released five updates — mostly fixes, but new content elements are not long in coming.
