The upcoming Resident Evil film is set to break away from the familiar stories of characters like Leon and others. In a recent interview with Variety, director and screenwriter Zak Kreger elaborated on his creative vision for the reboot of the Resident Evil trilogy. He made it clear that this film won’t simply retell the well-known narratives associated with beloved characters such as Leon, Claire, or Jill. Instead, Kreger is focused on the exciting challenge of developing fresh and original storylines that will unfold within the established universe. This approach aims to bring new life to the franchise while still honoring its roots, allowing fans to experience the world of Resident Evil in a completely new way.

Resident Evil Without Its Traditional Heroes: Director Reveals His Film Idea

Kregger, a long-time fan of one of the successful game series, considers his new project as a sincere declaration of love for the original. He emphasizes that when creating the film, he will strictly adhere to the canons of the universe, but deliberately refuses to introduce familiar characters. The director has already shared similar thoughts in previous interviews, but now he has finally confirmed his choice.

This creative course is due to his conviction: simply copying the plot of the games deprives the film adaptation of meaning. Instead of a direct retelling, Kregger wants to convey the recognizable style and rhythm of Resident Evil – the same viscous suspense and chilling fear that gamers experience, accompanying the hero through deadly dangerous locations. It is this unique atmosphere and internal dynamics of the originals that will become the foundation for a completely new story, organically integrated into the canvas of the legendary game universe.

Leon Returns to the Big Screen: Insider’s Look at the New Resident Evil

Like the controversial but iconic adaptations of Paul W. S. Anderson, the new film will also focus all attention on one central character. And there is every chance that it will be the already familiar Leon. According to insider information, Austin Abrams is being considered for the role – an actor who already managed to work with director Kroeger on the tense thriller “Gun”.

The premiere, which fans are eagerly awaiting, is scheduled for September 18, 2026. In recent years, Hollywood studios have already tried twice to return “Resident Evil” to the big screen, but both projects were far from successful. These attempts only emphasized how difficult it is to convey the atmosphere of the cult video game series in the format of a full-length film. All the more hope for viewers that the new version will be able to preserve the spirit of the original and at the same time give a fresh, unexpected look at the familiar universe.

In 2021, the film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was released on the big screens – an attempt to transfer the atmosphere and plot of the first two parts of the cult video game into the language of cinema. The film promised to give fans a nostalgic immersion in familiar locations and events, but the rush in production and script played a cruel joke: the film collected a modest box office and received mostly negative reviews from critics, who unanimously noted that the project could not reveal the potential of the original. A year later, in 2022, Netflix bet on a completely different approach, presenting viewers with the Resident Evil series with a completely original storyline. The focus was on the daughters of Albert Wesker and their complex, secretive life, woven into the dark universe of the franchise. The fresh concept promised a reimagining of the legendary story, but the result was controversial: critics were divided in their opinions, and a significant part of the audience was disappointed, expecting more from such a big name.
