The story campaign is completely questionable. Yes, it is beautiful, expensive, the destruction is large-scale – but all this is just tinsel. Instead of an emotional story or memorable characters, we are waiting for a routine set of cliches from past years. Everything that happens to the main characters seems to have migrated from military shooters of the early 2000s – only instead of World War II, now there is a geopolitical drama with China and Russia. In one mission, you storm the beach – and you can’t help but remember Omaha. In another, you drive a tank through narrow streets, shoot from a boat or shoot down a helicopter, as if it were a level from an arcade shooter. No freshness, no surprises – just a mechanical change of scenery.

The gameplay doesn’t help either. You are given the opportunity to indicate targets and give orders – but there is little sense in this. Your partners behave, to put it mildly, strangely: they slow down, ignore enemies, do not cover and rarely do anything useful. The enemies are the stereotypical “bad Russians” and Chinese with squints, as if deliberately exposing themselves to bullets. The shootouts are drawn out, boring and do not bring any tension.

The saddest thing is the complete absence of your own face. The story comes down to a banal confrontation of “freedom against dictatorship”, and your hero is a silent extra, formally a commander, but in fact performing one function: to point a finger at the enemy. Battlefield 4 wanted to be epic, but it turned out forced. We’ve seen it all before. What we wanted was something more.

The developers tried to give meaning to the single-player campaign: they promise new guns and nice bonuses for completing it again. But in reality, there is little motivation. Unfortunately, they did not bring in any cooperative missions. Therefore, after a five-hour patriotic story in the spirit of “America will save the world” (and this is on the maximum difficulty!), there is only one real path left – in multiplayer. Because, frankly speaking, this is exactly why people take Battlefield. Large-scale battles with equipment are the signature feature of the series. And here it is still at its best. Ten maps – each with its own atmosphere. Somewhere – jungles and islands, somewhere – concrete jungle: cities with tanks on the streets and fighters in the sky. All this mixes into a real meat grinder. There are a lot of possibilities: you can break down walls, punch your way through, destroy buildings. Take the elevator up to the roof and you’re floating with a parachute, surprising your enemies from the air.

Here’s what’s especially impressive about Battlefield 4 multiplayer:

• Fully destructible objects and buildings on the maps;
• Interactive elements – from elevators to flooded streets;
• Unique combat conditions: islands, megacities, mountain gorges;
• Freedom of movement and many ways to attack or bypass;

But how much fun the game is depends on your team. If there are reliable fighters nearby and there is a skilled commander who marks targets, coordinates actions and really helps, everything starts to work like clockwork. Then all the mechanics are revealed: Battlefield 4 turns into an epic canvas about war. Every role is important here, and a loner trying to pull it off alone is like a nut without a mechanism.

But if you are unlucky with the team, or there is no commander – banal chaos begins. Huge maps become a minefield: somewhere on a hill lies a sniper and waits for you to stop for at least a second, somewhere a tank rolls infantry, not noticing obstacles. Most deaths are not from a tactical error, but from sudden shots from a distance where the enemy is not even visible.

And as a result, players seem to be divided into castes: snipers watch for victims from the roofs, tankers commit genocide against infantry, and ordinary infantrymen… try to fight somehow. But most often – they die without having time to kill anyone. Because while you are running to the target – you have already been shot. Or a plane flew from above, leaving behind a smoking crater.

In addition to the classic Conquest (a battle for control over points on vast maps) and Rush (intense clashes between attackers and defenders), Battlefield 4 brings several new modes to the series. One of them is Obliteration, reminiscent of the forgotten Bombing Run mechanics from Unreal Tournament. The idea is simple: a bomb appears on the map, and teams fight for the opportunity to deliver it to one of the enemy targets.

Another “experiment” is Domination, a smaller version of Conquest with an emphasis on meaty combat in tight arenas. Together with Team Deathmatch and Squad Deathmatch, it shows that DICE still doesn’t know how to do chamber multiplayer. The maps are tight, shot at from top to bottom, and without reliable cover they turn into a shooting gallery. The destructibility of locations, usually one of the series’ features, only gets in the way here – destroyed buildings turn into traps. Defuse is presented as a tactical mode without respawns, in the spirit of Counter-Strike or Call of Duty. But it was not possible to evaluate it in action – it is simply impossible to find an active server. Perhaps this mode will remain an under-exploited idea.

The Battlelog interface still raises more questions than delight. Using a browser as a launcher for a shooter is, to put it mildly, a questionable decision. Constant switching between the game and the desktop is annoying, and stability is poor — crashes and connection breaks happen more often than we would like. The progression system is also not pampering. Promotions are given slowly, and the rewards for each level are mere crumbs. Without Premium access, the path to new guns and gadgets turns into a grueling marathon. This is clearly done with an eye on monetization — do you want everything at once? Pay.

Despite all of the above, Battlefield 4 is visually impressive. Huge islands, powerful waves, sunbeams breaking through the clouds, and a metropolis in the pouring rain – all of this looks truly alive. There is no breakthrough compared to Battlefield 3, and the blinding light effects are still annoying. But the artists and designers have done a tremendous job, smoothing out many of the flaws.

The PC version feels head and shoulders above the console versions. In addition to a more beautiful picture, it supports up to 64 players at a time (on PS3 and Xbox 360 – a maximum of 24). And this is a completely different level of scale. Old-generation consoles simply cannot handle such battles, so we can only wait for the release of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In the meantime, alas, PC players can only endure Battlelog and hope for quick patches that will make the battlefield more stable.

Is Battlefield 4 Worth Playing in 2025?

The main problem with Battlefield 4 is that in its current form it is hard to recommend even to dedicated fans. The single-player campaign is frankly boring – it has neither soul nor interesting discoveries. And in multiplayer, in addition to new maps and modes, players are greeted by the good old “joys”: imbalance, crashes, connection problems and bugs that DICE will probably be patching for a long time.

Yes, there are some pleasant innovations here – for example, the Obliteration mode, the return of the commander’s role and spectacular destruction that add atmosphere. But they are not able to overshadow the whole pile of technical and game design flaws that spoil the impression.

The situation is especially sad with the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions – few players, cramped maps that are not designed for such “room” shootouts. Such editions clearly do not reveal the potential of the game. Beginners should enter with caution. Even with a training ground, it’s difficult to understand the local rules, and the chaotic structure of the maps can quickly discourage you from playing.
