The open beta for Arc System Works’ fighting game Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls concluded with record-breaking numbers. High-ranking player statistics showed Magik and Blade leading the roster. The game is scheduled to release on August 6, 2026, at 8:00 AM PDT on PS5 and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store)—we’re looking at who will shape the meta at launch.

Record-Breaking Beta and Unexpected Leaders
The final open beta, which ran from July 24 to 26, 2026, yielded impressive numbers. On the Steam platform, the peak online player count reached 33,233. This is a true record for an open beta in the fighting game genre: the new game beat out Street Fighter 6 (32,787 players) and Tekken 8 (15,035 players).
However, the beta wasn’t without its challenges. The massive PSN outage on the first day directly affected the PC audience as well, due to the mandatory PSN account linking. Nevertheless, the battle for the top ranks proved fierce. User AlietteFaye analyzed a dataset of Vibranium+ players (the second-highest rank in the game) to determine the true balance of power in competitive play.
Magic and Blade are the main stars of the meta
The analysis results were revealing. Although a vast roster of 20 characters (including Spider-Man, Captain America, and Iron Man) will be available at launch, only two heroes captured the attention of the hardcore audience.

The overall top 5 most popular characters in the beta are:
-
Magik
-
Blade
-
Magneto
-
Spider-Man
-
Black Panther
The distribution by position in team fights is interesting. Magik confidently took first place in the Leader category (the main playable character). Blade, however, became the absolute leader in the Assist role (support character), leaving behind Magik and Magneto. In fact, Blade is the only hero to be in the top 4 of both categories simultaneously.
Why do Magik and Blade dominate?
The popularity of these characters is not just a coincidence, but a consequence of their mechanics. These fighters were originally designed with aggressive pressure and quick range control in mind.
Magik: uses the Soulsword and limbo magic. Her style is built around portal teleportations, unexpected mix-ups, and high mobility. This allows her to easily punish opponents for mistakes and maintain dominance in the arena.
Blade: Armed with a Muramasa sword and a firearm, he offers incredible, off-the-charts damage in close and mid-range combat. As an assist, Blade provides the perfect setup for continuing combos.
There are already rumors in the community about a potential nerf to Blade before release, as his versatility as an assist slightly disrupts the balance.
What awaits players at release?
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls will officially launch on August 6, 2026 (August 7 in Japan). The roster at launch will include 20 heroes, but the developers have already announced a season pass. The first DLC character will be Phoenix Cyclops, who will join the roster in the fall of 2026.
Regarding the technical state of the PC version, Arc System Works has already acknowledged the presence of bugs and optimization issues discovered during the beta. The developers have promised to fix the code and release a corresponding day-one patch to ensure a smooth launch on all target platforms.
