Yes, the name is a bit confusing: the character is named after one of the six elements of NTE. But once you understand his kit, there’s no question. Chaos is an S-rank esper with a powerful skill set and excellent team synergy. If you build your squad wisely, he’s definitely worth considering.

He debuted immediately after Lacrimosa, in the first banner update of Neverness to Everness. According to lore, he’s a current member of ETD-6 in the Anomaly Control Bureau—an esper who fights for justice. And yes, he’s definitely worth gachaing. Below, we’ll discuss how to build Chaos wisely.

Chaos Character Review in Neverness to Everness

Chaos is Lakshana’s first esper, added after the launch of NTE (we got Hathor and Skia at launch). He’s an S-rank character capable of bringing serious elemental power to any top-tier lineup. You meet him in the main story as a member of the Anomaly Control Bureau. If you liked how his Lakshana skills synergize with Psyche and Cosmos espers in battle, Chaos is a candidate for elimination. This is especially true if you’re actively pursuing elemental reactions like Stain and Remora: Lakshana works great on top of them. The synergy with Remora is generally the best, so you should focus on Cosmos characters to build this combo.

His mechanics are tied to the Crime gauge. Chaos’s basic attacks fill it, and when the gauge is full, those same basic attacks become noticeably more damaging. The bottom line is simple: keep the gauge filled at all times, otherwise half of his potential is wasted.

One more thing. Chaos is the first character whose Life Skills are tailored for fishing in Etero. He increases the limit on high-value orders, enhances lure effects, reduces fish stamina, and more. A small, but pleasant detail.

Crime Meter Mechanics and Chaos Damage Scaling

The Chaos Kit is tied to one key mechanic: the crime gauge. This isn’t a decorative interface element, but the primary tool for boosting your DPS. Basic attacks—specifically, the “Pursuit” combo of 5 quick strikes—serve as the primary source of stacks. Waiting for it to fully charge is mandatory. The problem is that until the gauge is fully charged, Chaos’ overall effectiveness is cut in half.

Mistakes in rotation are costly. The main trick lies in the behavior of the “Verdict” skill when it reaches 100%. If the gauge is completely full, the skill burns all points and activates a devastating combo—an additional powerful hit, backed by heavy damage from “Retribution,” is added to the basic “Final Verdict.” Did you let the skill cooldown down early? Get a limited version: only the first phase of “Final Verdict” will work for two hits. The difference in numbers is colossal. The conclusion is obvious: pressing the button when the meter is half empty is a complete waste of DPS.

How to quickly charge Esper Lakshana’s crime gauge?

Manually building stacks takes too long, but the developers included three excellent levers to speed up the cycle. Judging by playtesting, it’s their combination that turns the character into an annihilation machine.

  • Ultimate ability “Retribution”: Activates the “Echo of Horror” buff. While Chaos is in this state, the energy flow to the gauge increases exponentially.
  • Awakening “Insightful Understanding”: Provides a solid boost. You’ll gain 40% more gauge points when attacking targets with the “Warrant” status. Incidentally, this debuff is automatically applied to all enemies within range while the ultimate is active.
  • Passive “False Start”: Completely resolves the timing issue. This perk instantly refills the crime gauge to maximum immediately after activating “Retribution.”

Verdict skill damage dependence on the scale charge

Verdict skill damage dependence on the meter charge. It seems the ideal timing for button presses is completely different from what most newbies think. You should only use Retribution when the meter is empty or nearly depleted—the ultimate will instantly boost you to peak form (especially if you have False Start unlocked). This results in a virtually endless spam of empowered skills. Conversely, activating the ultimate when the meter is already full is a completely questionable decision, depriving you of a ton of free energy.

All Chaos NTE combat skills and passive abilities

Basic attack – Pursuit. Swings the weapon, unleashing up to 5 attacks in a row, dealing damage to Lakshana and building up the Crime meter.

Verdict. Consumes all Crime stacks: adds a second hit to Final Verdict and deals heavy damage with Retribution if the meter was full. If the gauge is not full, only the first hit of “Final Verdict” hits twice.

Knockdown. Press your basic attack in mid-air to perform a downward strike: Lakshana deals area damage upon landing. The higher you fall, the more painful it is, up to double the damage. This also awakens your Hunter’s Sense, allowing Chaos to briefly sense nearby enemies.

Skill: Mark of Doubt. Shoots enemies in front of you and unleashes a dog that bites the target twice. Places a “Warrant” on two enemies for 15 seconds. Chaos deals 20% more damage to targets with a “Warrant.”

Ultimate: Retribution. Summons a dog to crush nearby enemies, places a “Warrant” on everyone within the radius, and inflicts Chaos with the “Echo of Terror” state. While both Chaos and Echo of Terror are active, the Crime meter fills quickly, meaning Final Verdict and the heavy damage of Retribution are used more often.

Chaos Retribution ultimate skill

Support skill: Charge. An upward swing of the scythe deals damage to Lakshana.

Support skill upgrades:

  • Timely Justice. Deals 800% of Lakshana’s attack damage to the target after Remora ends, depending on its duration. Each second beyond the base 5 adds 45% to the total damage, up to 300%. Recasting it resets Remora’s duration.
  • Primary Target. Increases the damage bonus from Order to 30%.

Best Arch and Console for Chaos Builds

Golden Arc – “The Desired.” +20% damage to Chaos Lakshana. After using “Blowdown” or your Ultimate, gain +40% critical damage for 20 seconds (the timer resets upon reactivation).

Purple Arc – “The Time Will Come.” Grants +10% attack, defense, and health if there are three different Espers in the team.

Console:

Cartridge: Street Fighter

  • Epic bonus (2 parts): +10% damage to Lakshana.
  • Legendary bonus (4 parts): +14% critical hit chance. Activating “Remora” or “Stain” on your team increases the bonus for 20 seconds.

Best modules by priority: Critical Hit Chance, Critical Damage, Damage, and Attack.

Top-tier squad builds and Esper-Chaos synergies

Top Lineup:

  • Hathor
  • Zero
  • Haniel

F2P Lineup:

  • Zero
  • Skia
  • Haniel

One of the key strategies with Chaos—especially during the “Time Will Come” arc—is ensuring diversity in Esper types in your squad. He’s your primary damage dealer, relying heavily on his basic attack to build up his Crime meter, so choose your teammates wisely.

Having a Psyche Esper in your team is almost mandatory to consistently pump out more damage. There aren’t many of them in the game yet, but Haniel is one of the best. She’s suitable for both paid and free lineups. Incidentally, if you’re knocking out Chaos in the Scarborough Fair gacha, you’ll likely pick up a ton of her copies—she’s currently one of the top buffers. Given the emphasis on Remora, Chaos should always be paired with a Cosmos Esper, no matter what the rest of the lineup is like. There are several options, but Zero—your own character—is one of the best starting partners. Both hit fast and quickly build their gauges, so pairing them is almost always the right decision.

The last slot can be given to a flexible character, but in practice, it’s more beneficial to double Lakshana’s damage: this element is less common than the others. Hathor is a great choice here if you’ve gotten her and leveled her up (she’s also S-rank). If not, Skia is a great replacement; it’s much easier to get.

Leveling Priority and the Best Chaos Awakenings

Available effects:

  • Insightful Insight. +40% Crime Gauge when attacking enemies with “Order.”
  • Charge/Sin. Ignores 20% of the target’s defense with “Order.”
  • Embers’ Flash. +30% Crit. Damage for 20 seconds after Retribution (timer resets when recast).
  • Deluge. Transfers Order to the nearest unmarked target and recalculates the duration when killing a target with Order.
  • Stare into the Void. +20% damage to the target if there is only one target with Order left on the field.
  • False Start. Instantly restores the Crime meter to maximum after Retribution.
  • Awakening Effect 3 (Judgement/Truth). +1 to the skill level of Pursuit, Mark of Doubt, and Retribution.
  • Awakening Effect 6 (Light/Dawn). Reduces the Lakshana resistance of all enemies with Order by 10%.

S-Rank is expensive to awaken, so here’s the recommended order:

  1. Charge/Sin – first. You’ll be constantly casting “Order,” so the Defense Break on such enemies pays off immediately.
  2. False Start is a huge help: a full Crime meter immediately after the Ultimate. Cast “Retribution” when the meter is almost empty and get a nearly infinite instant attack boost.
  3. Embers’ Flash opens when the Critical Damage and Critical Chance modules are already equipped on the console—their effect is effectively doubled.
  4. Insightful Insight is a good way to start buffing “Order” once your build has more flexibility. But we don’t prioritize it.
  5. Void Gaze turns Chaos into an excellent boss killer due to the increased single-target damage with “Order.” It’s not much use in crowd control, though.
  6. Flood closes out the build well: you already have plenty of ways to issue “Orders,” and the mark won’t get stuck on a half-dead enemy when there’s already another one nearby with low HP.
