Tsaritsa and Snezhnaya in Genshin Impact — Cultural References, Characters & Release Date - Image 1

Hoyoverse has finally revealed the Queen—an event Genshin Impact fans have been waiting for years. The developers have unveiled the key characters of Snezhnaya, the last great region of Teyvat, inspired by Tsarist Russia. Anastasia Fedorova—the name of Archon Krio—starred in a teaser that could arguably be called one of the most important in the history of the free-to-play RPG.

Regions based on real-world prototypes are nothing new for Genshin. Sumeru referenced Persia and Egypt, Fontaine France, and Natlan Australia, Africa, and Mesoamerica. Snezhnaya, with its icy expanses and imperial aesthetic, is a logical step in this geographical mosaic. But the main intrigue lies beyond the setting.

Russian and Slavic References in the Snezhnaya Region

The Chinese team at HoYoverse never directly replicates real countries; they create complex cultural metaphors. The image of Snezhnaya is woven from pre-revolutionary imperial architecture, northern fairy tales, Orthodox motifs, and the harsh Soviet industrialization. The result is not a crude copy, but a dense, recognizable cultural code scattered throughout Teyvat. It is this region that Genshin Impact fans are particularly eagerly awaiting.

The main marker is, of course, the toponyms. The developers have already teased Snezhnograd, Novokitezhgrad, Morepesok, and the majestic Polar Palace. The ancient suffix “-grad” immediately alludes to the Old Slavic naming, and Novokitezhgrad is a direct Easter egg to the ancient Russian legend of the city of Kitezh, which sank to the bottom of a lake to avoid surrendering to its enemies. This is perhaps one of the most elegant folkloric finds in the game’s history.

The region’s onomastics are also intriguing. Take, for example, the surname Fedorovna, which is actually a classic Russian patronymic. Or the name Anastasia, which translates from Greek as “resurrection.” Against the backdrop of the icy aesthetic of the Cryo Archon and the endless fan theories about a global reboot of the local universe, this choice seems entirely deliberate. The developers themselves, however, are maintaining a partisan silence and are not revealing the hidden meaning.

Sources of the cultural code of the Cryo Kingdom

Analysis of city names and character titles

  • Snezhnograd. A traditional East Slavic suffix for large fortified settlements.
  • Novokitezhgrad. A deep mythological reference to the invisible city of Kitezh.
  • The Polar Palace. An architectural hybrid combining features of the Russo-Byzantine style and winter residences.
  • Tsaritsa. An official pre-revolutionary title emphasizing the absolute power of the ruler.
  • Names of characters and ordinary NPCs. Use of traditional Slavic and Orthodox names.

It’s important to understand that Snezhnaya isn’t focused solely on Russia. On the streets of the northern region, it’s easy to encounter characters with Ukrainian, Polish, Belarusian, and Balkan names. And the top brass of the local government—the Harbingers of Fatui—even sport pseudonyms from the Italian commedia dell’arte, such as Pantalone or Tartaglia. This cultural hodgepodge transforms the Krio Kingdom into a distinctive artistic world, rather than a banal caricature.

Snezhnaya’s release date and Sandrona’s release

Besides the Tsaritsa, other characters will also appear in the upcoming storyline. One of them is Sandrona, which will become playable on July 1st with update 6.7. Its trailer, by the way, is already online. The region itself, according to leaks, will open on August 12th, 2026. In about a month and a half, we’ll be able to set foot on the permafrost.

Spaceship and Time Loop Theories

And here’s the catch. Snowy is the last of the major regions, but it’s not the end of the game. Genshin’s main storyline stretches for over 200 hours, and the developers have already dropped a new plot twist: a spaceship carrying the heroes from distant stars. One gets the feeling the Chinese developers aren’t stopping there—perhaps other planets await us, and Teyvat itself will be just one stop.

The icy region is perfect for reflecting on time. Snowy isn’t just cold, but a frozen moment. What if the Queen is the keeper of the time loop, and Sandrona is the key to unlocking it? Then the August update will be more than just the release of a new location, but a bifurcation point: either eternal peace or a breakthrough into the unknown. A coincidence with the space arc? Unlikely.

We’re following the news and preparing for August 12th. Meanwhile, let’s explore Sandrona’s trailer, which already gives us food for thought.
