Fans are already speculating about how many gigabytes will need to be freed up on the PS5 or Xbox Series X for the long-awaited GTA 6. There are no official figures yet, but industry trends and Rockstar’s past releases allow for some fairly accurate predictions. And they’re impressive, to say the least.

How many gigabytes will GTA 6 take up at launch?

Looking at recent blockbusters, the picture is clear. Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 currently weigh in at around 100-110 GB—but that’s taking into account years of patches and add-ons. A more recent example is Starfield, which takes up between 125 and 140 GB on various platforms. Considering the scale of GTA 6’s map, pieced together from leaked footage (from bustling metropolises to mountainous wastelands), a conservative estimate starts at 120-130 GB. However, there are even more ambitious estimates. In 2024, user @GTA6Intel on the social network X cited a now-deleted news item that claimed a size of around 200 GB. Such rumors should be treated with caution, but they are not without logic: the detailed textures, the volume of voice acting, and the animations in the trailers hint that the game could break all records.

GTA 6 Blu ray Disc Distribution Size

Another important detail is the physical edition. Most likely, the box will only contain a download code, not a full disc. This is due to the Blu-ray XL’s 128 GB limitation, as well as Rockstar’s habit of polishing the project right up until release. No one wants to return to the GTA V era on Xbox 360 with multiple discs.

Preload Date and Game Size on PC

Traditionally, PC versions of games take up more space than console versions, so PC owners should prepare for an even larger download. The good news: GTA 6 pre-load will open a full week before launch—on November 19th. That’s plenty of time to delete a couple of old games and free up some space. You won’t be playing anything else anyway, right?

Incidentally, recent leaks suggest Rockstar is testing advanced AI-based texture compression algorithms—this could reduce the final size somewhat, but it’s unclear whether they’ll be able to keep the limit below 150 GB. In any case, upgrading your storage is looking increasingly like a wise investment.

RAGE Engine Optimization with AI

AI texture compression

Rockstar’s gaming division is apparently preparing a technical revolution for its RAGE Engine graphics engine to cope with the distribution weight of the upcoming blockbuster. While insiders are trumpeting the integration of artificial intelligence for rigorous compression of visual assets, gamers shouldn’t expect miracles—they won’t happen. Games won’t be halved in size.

The latest AI algorithms operate fundamentally differently than a standard ZIP archiver. Essentially, the developers are creating an advanced storage ecosystem for “heavy” assets that manages to maintain maximum image clarity while minimizing the storage space on an SSD.

Neural Texture Compression in GTA 6

The main focus of this technological breakthrough is on Neural Texture Compression systems (neural network texture compression). A specially trained model quickly reconstructs the finest graphics details from a highly compressed, compact state on the fly. Instead of cluttering the graphics card’s memory with a standard set of individual maps (including albedo, normal, roughness, and ambient occlusion), engineers encode this data array in latent space. During rendering, the engine instantly decodes the information.

NVIDIA, Intel, and leading research institutes are currently actively exploring similar technologies, but widespread industry adoption is still a long way off. If Rockstar successfully tests this method, textures—traditionally the most memory-hungry file type in any modern title—will be the first to be optimized.

System Space Requirements Prediction

Even if neural networks perform local miracles with graphic files, the overall size of the game folder will still force users to clear out their drives. You can’t fool physics. An open world of unprecedented scale, a colossal amount of unique geometry, terabytes of uncompressed audio, advanced character animation, and, of course, future tons of patches for GTA Online are guaranteed to consume tens of gigabytes. AI is powerless here—these components are reluctant to compress.

GTA 6 Distribution Resources and AI Optimization Potential

GTA 6 Distribution Resource Real AI Optimization Potential
Ultra-high-resolution textures Maximum. Neural networks can efficiently compress graphics without noticeable blur on screen.
PBR material maps High. Latent space can easily collapse layers of roughness and reflections.
Dialogue voice-over and localization Low. Audio files are difficult to compress with neural algorithms without losing sound quality.
Story cutscenes and video Low. Video streams already rely on strict encoding standards.
Complex character animation sets Minimal. Skeletal animation requires precise mathematical coordinates.

Let’s be realistic: smart texture compression is designed more to keep the new franchise’s appetite for storage within reasonable limits. Without AI optimization, the project would easily have broken the psychological mark of 180-200 GB. A smart approach by the engineers will save a significant amount of gigabytes and prevent players from buying new hardware, while maintaining impeccable visuals.

The studio hasn’t officially revealed its plans for using neural networks in the RAGE Engine. Any conclusions right now are merely calculated predictions based on the evolution of modern game engines. We can only wait for the official system requirements.
