Where can I get the The Lost Apprentice quest
The quest becomes available after completing the first chapter. You’ll be told about a certain Kain, Cor Calom’s apprentice, who has disappeared without a trace. The trail leads to the Marsh Camp, a small cultist settlement where everyone smokes swamp grass. Head there.
Climb up to the laboratory—there’s a templar at the entrance, but you don’t have to talk to him; just go inside. Find Cor Calom and ask about Kain. He’ll ask you to search the apprentice’s hut for any clues.
Searching for clues in Kains hut
The hut is next to the grass crusher. The landmark is the two adjacent huts; There’s a guy smoking near one. You need the one on the left. Go inside and explore. There you’ll find a sketch of an old mine—the main clue. Incidentally, this hut can be used as your own sleeping quarters in the Swamp Camp, which is quite convenient.

With the sketch, go to Lester—he’s standing at the main entrance to the camp. Lester will identify the location: it’s the Abandoned Mine. Now your task is to get there.
How to open the Abandoned Mine and beat Orry
The mine is nearby; you passed it at the very beginning of the game on your way to the Old Camp. If you don’t belong to the Old Camp, the guard Orry will block your path. You have two options: pay him 200 ore nuggets or defeat him in combat. Choose according to the situation—the fight isn’t too difficult, but if you have plenty of ore, it’s easier to pay him off.
After Orry gives you the key, go inside.

Finding the Secret Winch in the Flooded Mine
Inside, move forward until you reach the first flooded area. Dive in and swim slightly to the right—there you’ll find a separate winch and a couple of ore nuggets (a nice bonus). Then swim to the far platform, climb the ladder, and turn left. There, use the winch to lift the door. Dive under the raised door and continue swimming, following the current.

Once you reach the platform on the other side, jump into the water again, swim through the hole, and continue moving with the current.
How to get through the mother rats lair
In the next section, you’ll encounter a mother rat with two babies. You can kill them or simply run past them—they’re not too dangerous. Once you reach the next flooded area, dive in and swim with the current to the final area.
Tactics against the Undead Orc and valuable loot
In the final zone, you’ll encounter an altar and an undead orc. This is a formidable opponent, so be sure to save before the fight. The orc attacks with two heavy swings—dodge and strike between attacks. There’s also a trick: lure it into the water and shoot it with an arrow—this makes the fight significantly easier.

After defeating it, loot the orc’s body to obtain a Strange Amulet and Kush Pah. Kain’s body lies near the altar—you can also loot it. Climb up and use the amulet on the door to get out.
Quest reward from Kor Kalom
Return to Kor Kalom in the Swamp Camp and show him the Strange Amulet. This will trigger the next quest, and you’ll receive 50 ore nuggets as a reward. The quest is complete, and the student’s secret is partially revealed—you’ll learn the rest later.

Using the Kush Pah and Strange Amulet
The items taken from the corpse of an undead orc are far from useless junk to sell to merchants. In the updated Gothic 1, the developers have transformed these items into important quest and gameplay tools tied to completing Chapter 2 and exploring Minenthal. Their potential isn’t immediately apparent, but proper use guarantees a significant boost to your character.
Alchemy recipes from the Kush Pah ingredient
Kush Pah previously functioned as a simple heal, but in the remake, its mechanics have been completely redesigned. Now, this resource is prized by alchemists:
-
Potion of Dark Vision. Mixing Kush Pah with swamp grass and a firefly mushroom creates a mixture that improves visibility in dark locations for 30 seconds.
-
Elixir of Rage. When combined with Fireroot and Magic Ore, it provides a temporary buff: +20% to outgoing physical damage for 60 seconds (the effect stacks with equipment bonuses).
-
Secret Blueprint. If you bring the trophy to Cor Kalom immediately after visiting the mine, the guru will exchange it for a unique formula for an elixir that regenerates stamina. Otherwise, this blueprint cannot be obtained in the game.
Important note: using an item from your inventory for healing is foolish. The basic recovery provides a measly 15 HP, which is incomparable to the benefits of crafting.
Hidden Locations for the Strange Amulet
Although the artifact is taken to open doors in the mine, it remains in your backpack after completing the task. In the Gothic 1 remake, this item has been transformed into a universal key for three caches:
-
Abandoned Mine: If you use the amulet again on the same door after the first activation, a hidden passage will open. At the end of the corridor, a secret boss awaits—a ghostly gnome who drops a rare resource for top-tier crafting.
-
Old Camp Barracks: A locked room on the upper level, unbreakable by lockpicks, can be opened with this artifact. Inside lies a chest: loot 200 ore and an excellent two-handed sword.
-
Swamp Camp: If you have this item in your pocket, the local altar will activate a hidden scene with a ghost. The dialogue reward is access to an underground warehouse with valuable magic, including the “Ice Blast” scroll.
Secret ending and the Orcish Legacy quest
Visiting Kor Calom with the amulet triggers long-term consequences. The alchemist will hint that the amulet is merely a component in a larger mechanism. This will activate the full-fledged “Orcish Legacy” questline.
You will need to find three more similar artifacts throughout Khorinis. Each one is tied to a specific shrine, and collecting the entire collection will unlock a secret ending to the story, which the creators kept hidden until the very release.
Tip: Save both finds until you’ve leveled up your alchemy or visited the ancient altars. Spending them prematurely will completely cut off your access to alternative quests and valuable loot.
