“A Black Tide is sweeping the game” — Ubisoft has unveiled the final update for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Get ready, it’s huge.

The developers have officially announced that patch 1.1.11 will be released tomorrow, June 16, on all current platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The update’s size ranges from 9 to 26 GB depending on the system.

What’s inside? First, the final story arc, “Black Tides.” Naoe and Yasuke will encounter two elite Templars from the Black Cross order who have arrived in Japan on a personal mission—and theirs is far from simple. This quest will add nearly two hours of story to the game and conclude the story of the main characters, while also establishing direct connections to the upcoming Black Flag remake. To access “Black Tides,” you’ll need to complete the main storyline and two previous post-release quests: “A Critical Encounter” and “A Puzzlement.”

Secondly, for those who’ve already completed them, there’s a new endgame mode called “Domains.”

“Domains” is a series of five gameplay simulations, each divided into ten difficulty levels. These are unlocked at character level 30, after which players gain access to surreal Animus arenas where the familiar logic of the world is distorted beyond recognition. The key feature is procedural modifiers. With each new run, the rules change: tactics that worked last time may prove useless on this level. To reach the final boss, you’ll need to destroy all the Daisho on the map while simultaneously combating escalating negative effects. And yes, the Animus exploits that help you complete the trial don’t work outside of it, but the exclusive rewards (weapons, armor, and engravings) will carry over into the main campaign.

Speaking of rewards, all gear from Domains is unique—you won’t find it in the in-game store or from vendors. It’s a mark of distinction for those willing to take a risk. If you decide to tackle the highest difficulty levels, an Animus hacker nicknamed MOD will offer you an exclusive store with his own currency, special sets, and an additional skill tree.

️ Domains Secrets in Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Easter Eggs, References to Older Games, and What the MOD Hacker Is Hiding

Let’s get straight to the point, no fluff.

What Easter eggs and references to past games in the series can be found in Domains?

Besides the direct plot bridge to Black Flag Resynced, the community has already found several hints within the new endgame. The most prominent of these is a reference to Kassandra from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Ubisoft seems to have decided to be upfront about it: one of the dialogues or quest descriptions contains a clear reference to the legendary mercenary, which fans immediately spotted. Furthermore, progressing through Domains will unlock weapons and armor that “Animus veterans” will recognize at first glance—something from Ezio’s sets or other Assassins of the past might even be among them. Who is the MOD Hacker and what story does he hide?

MOD isn’t just the name of a mode, but a fully-fledged NPC hacker within the Assassin’s Creed lore. According to Ubisoft’s description, this character created the “Domains” simulations. His goal is to help Dark Animus fighters hone their survival skills. Furthermore, MOD has its own exclusive store within the Animus, where powerful sets and engravings unavailable anywhere else are sold for a special currency (earned through challenges). It seems that Ubisoft is teasing something larger through this character, possibly connected to future story arcs throughout Assassin’s Creed Infinity.

What weapons and rewards can you earn for completing Domains?

Rewards are divided into several types. First, there are “remixes” of old items—familiar swords or armor, but with improved stats and new engravings. Secondly, these are completely unique items created specifically for Domains (for example, themed armor in the style of Black Flag or weapons with references to Odyssey). All of these items are collectible, as they cannot be obtained legally outside the mode. For convenience, here is a summary of the key parameters of the new endgame:

Key Parameters of the Domains Mode

  • Number of Arenas/Maps — 5 unique simulations
  • Difficulty Levels — 10 per location
  • Entry Threshold — Level 30
  • Key Mechanic — Gameplay-altering Modifiers
  • Reward Type — Exclusive weapons, armor, engravings, MOD currency
  • Purchaseable — No, only by fulfilling conditions
  • Lore Character — MOD (Animus Hacker)

And finally, a few words about the crossover. Along with the patch, two new projects will be added to the Animus Hub: Undertow and Currents. Unlocking anomalies will unlock Pirates of the Caribbean-themed costumes and weapons for Naoe and Yasuke. The connection will work both ways: when Black Flag Resynced launches on July 9th, Edward Kenway will also be able to don the Japanese armor from Shadows. It’s a shame for Nintendo Switch 2 owners—with the Black Flag remaster unavailable on their platform, the crossover content is unfortunately unavailable.
