Forza Horizon 6 is full of mini-quests, and each one earns “Discover Japan” points. The higher the rank of the researcher, the more rewards are available. One of the kits is just about tuning and upgrading cars. And there is a test that has baffled many players. The usual replacement of the engine and battery does not work. The task is not counted. Why? Because you don’t need any car, but strictly an electric vehicle (EV), and you need to replace it through a special section. Now I’ll tell you how to do everything right.

List of suitable EV electric vehicles for the quest
Not every EV in the garage will have an option to Replace the engine and battery. I’ve checked three machines, and it definitely works on them.:
-
BMW IX XDRIVE50 (2022) — 37,000 credits
-
Wuling Hongguang Mini Ev (2022) — 5,000 credits (the most budget option)
-
Honda e (2022) — 30,000 credits
If you want to save money and you don’t care about power, take Wuling. I’ll explain why further.
Instructions for replacing the engine and battery in the garage
Get into a suitable electric vehicle. You’re going to a house or garage. Further:
-
Menu “Cars” → “Modernization and tuning” → “Custom modernization”.
-
You are looking for the “Body kits and conversions” section.
-
Inside is the item “Engine and battery replacement”.
Here lies the main nuance. Choose one of the upgrade options. Available for the Honda e and Wuling: engine with 235 hp (20,000 cr.) and 670 hp (75,000 cr.). BMW has more powerful options: 670 hp for 75,000 cr. or 1893 hp for 100,000 cr.

After selecting it, click the menu button (to the right of the Xbox button on the gamepad) to open the shopping cart. Click again to buy and install.
How to complete the task of Upgrading cars cheaply
The Wuling Hongguang Mini Ev is your choice if you want to complete a task for almost nothing. The car costs 5,000, plus the engine costs 20,000. A total of 25,000 credits. Just before buying, make sure that you have free funds — upgrading consumes money instantly.

Step out of the garage into the open world. Immediately after that, a notification should appear in the upper—right corner: the test “Car modernization – Engine and battery replacement” in the Open Japan brand book has been completed. By the way, if you haven’t had this car in your collection yet, it will also be marked in the stamp book, and you will receive additional points. A nice bonus.

Why is the replacement of the engine for gasoline cars not counted
The task is not counted if you install another engine through the regular tuning section. Only through “Body Kits and Conversions” and only for EVs. Don’t waste time on gasoline cars — it’s useless. And if you don’t have enough money, take a Wuling and a cheap motor. Progress towards full completion is guaranteed.
All rewards for completing the Car Upgrades branch
At first glance, the task of “Replacing the engine and battery” seems absolutely passable. Just one inconspicuous line in the Car Upgrades menu of your Collection Journal, for which you get a modest 10 Discover Japan points. Won’t it be enough? No way. The cumulative effect works here, and bonuses fall from three different directions at once.
Discover Japan Glasses and Barn Finds Discovery
Each closed trial in the Journal methodically pushes your global counter. And stamps are the key to rumors about Barn Finds rarities and the discovery of new real estate. By the way, there are 15 Barn Finds scattered across the map, rigidly tied to 7 levels of progress. Do you want to make the most of it? Take a car purely for this quest (the same Honda e will do just fine) and loot another +5 Discover Japan points from above for expanding the fleet. A total of 15 points for a couple of clicks in the garage. A solid start.
How do I get a 2023 Honda Civic Type R for free
Score 200 points inside the Car Upgrades tab — the game generously gives out a 2023 Honda Civic Type R. And this is not an ordinary car. You can’t find it in a regular Autoshow, the exclusive goes strictly for the progress in the Collection Journal. Any replacement of the engine or battery is poured into the same piggy bank. Proper tuning noticeably brings the moment of receiving the coveted Civic closer.

Getting 500 bonus points in the Master Explorer
But here begins a serious game. Close any Discover Japan branch at 100% — the system throws a large 500 points on top through the Master Explorer menu. The Car Upgrades branch is, tellingly, one of the ten available. Moreover, you can clean it up without a tedious grind at all, if you consistently pump your fleet before arrivals.
Critical circumstances: No autoloading. All the goodies — spins, credits and prize cars — will have to be picked up by hand directly in the Collection Journal. Did you see the gift icon on the screen? It won’t fall into the inventory itself. Make it a point to check the log after each busy tuning session.
