The release of the action RPG Phantom Blade Zero has been pushed back by 50 days—the stylish kung fu punk will now reach players on October 29th, instead of the originally announced September 9th. Developers S-Game Studio announced the delay shortly after the project’s reveal at Sony’s latest State of Play presentation, deciding to take extra time to polish the final touches.

What prompted the developers of Phantom Blade Zero to take a break?

The development director, who goes by the name Soulframe, has already published an open apology to the audience on the social media platform X. The message is simple: the studio sees a huge amount of fan expectations (and this is no exaggeration), so they are simply not ready to release the title now, knowing there’s potential to improve it.

There is no exact list of changes yet. Therefore, the developers are focusing on the technical foundation and overall visuals. It’s crucial for the creators that Phantom Blade Zero’s signature atmosphere and combat tempo deliver maximum impact for the vast majority of gamers.

Tellingly, S-Game Studio has categorically rejected the current trend of fixing games with post-release patches. The developers’ idea is sound: those who jump into the project on day one deserve the most playable build possible right from the start. While a 50-day pause is unlikely to fix all minor bugs, this should be plenty of time to refine key gameplay mechanics.

PC Gamer Impressions and Release Prospects

The high expectations for the project weren’t born out of nowhere. Back in August of last year, Wes Fenlon, editor of PC Gamer, flew to China specifically for a closed test drive. The journalist was absolutely delighted with the choreography—he even compared the operatic splendor of the local battles to the cult film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Overall, there’s no need to panic. As the VPEsports.com editors rightly point out, a delay of a couple of months isn’t a tragedy. A delayed game eventually becomes good, but a product that’s broken at launch risks remaining bad forever. We’ll wait until the end of autumn.
