Windrose is an open—world pirate MMO where survival depends not only on combat skills, but also on how well the character is fed. Fishing here solves this problem elegantly: properly cooked fish dishes provide real combat gains, and not just replenish health.
But just walking up to the water and starting fishing won’t work. The game requires preparation.

You can’t buy a fishing rod at Windrose, just craft it.
This is probably the first thing that confuses newbies. There is no dealer with ready-made gear in Windrose. You will have to make a fishing rod yourself on a 3rd-level workbench.
If the workbench has not been upgraded yet, you first need to spend 20 units of wood and 10 copper ingots to upgrade it. After that, the recipe opens.
What you will need to craft a fishing rod:

Solid wood — 5 pcs. (chopping Divi-Divi trees in the Foothills)

Rope — 3 pcs. (made from vegetable fibers)

Iron ingots of the Foothills — 2 pcs. (smelting in a melting furnace)
A small caveat: you can get to the Foothills only after defeating the boss Thomas Richards in the quest “Revenge is best served cold.” So if you’ve just started, fishing can wait.
How fishing in Windrose works
The mechanics are intentionally simple, but they require attention. Approach any body of water, take a fishing rod in your hands and throw the line with the attacking button (by default — LMB).
Then you wait. The float is swaying, the water is calm. The moment for cutting comes when the line is abruptly stretched. You need to press the same button again and the fish will be in the inventory.
According to a clarification from the community: it is better to pull out on the third pull, when a characteristic fountain appears above the float. It is then that the bite is considered to have taken place.
Raw fish doesn’t do anything by itself. It needs to be cut up: open the backpack, right—click on the fish – “Use the item”. You get Fish fillets that are already being cooked.
All types of fish in Windrose are rare
There are ten types of fish in the game, divided into three levels of rarity. The number of fillets per carcass depends on the rarity — the more valuable the catch, the more ingredients.

The Big Barracuda
Epic types are much less common, but they provide significantly more material for cooking. If the goal is to quickly get fillets, you can catch ordinary fish. If you need powerful dishes with serious buffs, you should hunt for barracuda or mackerel.
Why do this at all at Windrose
Fishing in Windrose is not a meditative side content for those who are bored. This is a real part of the progression. Dishes made from fish fillets provide power—ups for combat, and ignoring them in difficult encounters means deliberately complicating your life.
Plus, the process of extracting materials itself is not delayed: you craft a fishing rod once, and then you catch at least every stream on the island.
