Rumors about Rust 2 broke out suddenly — and were refuted almost as quickly. But in a short time, they managed to excite the community and remind them that interest in the future of Rust has not gone away.
The founder of Facepunch Studios, Garry Newman, personally intervened to dot the “I” after the unexpected appearance of the “Rust 2” page on Steam.

Rust 2’s Steam page blew up the discussion
It all started on Reddit: users noticed the real Rust 2 Steam page. It wasn’t a fake screenshot — the page actually existed, and that’s what became the main trigger for discussions.
The players instantly started guessing. Someone decided that this was a full-fledged announcement of Rust 2, others suggested that it was about porting the game to a new engine. There were also those who saw this as just a test or a mistake.
The situation was fueled by a short comment from the developers: “You didn’t see anything.” In the context of the industry, it almost sounded like a hint — and only reinforced the feeling that something interesting was going on behind the scenes.
Garry Newman denied the development of Rust 2
When the discussion got too loud, Garry Newman decided to step in personally. In a comment for PC Gamer, he gave the most direct answer:
There is no Rust 2 right now, and the studio is not working on a sequel.
Moreover, Newman stressed that he “has absolutely no idea” where this Steam page came from. This statement sharply cooled expectations, but did not remove all questions.
Why Rust 2 Rumors Seem Plausible

Interestingly, the reaction of the players was not just hype from scratch. The rumors have a logical basis.
Firstly, Rust has been developing on the same technological foundation for more than a decade. And although the game is constantly being updated, many have been waiting for a more serious leap forward for a long time.
Secondly, Facepunch is actively working on a new s&box engine, which has been discussed in the community for a long time. This automatically triggers associations with a possible “Rust 2” or restart of the project.
And finally, Newman himself said back in 2023 that if Rust 2 ever appeared, he would definitely not use Unity. Such statements easily turn into fuel for rumors.
Why is this important for players
The story of Rust 2 on Steam is not just a random throw-in. It shows how much interest remains in the game even years later.
Rust is one of those projects that has experienced several waves of popularity. After its early access release in 2013, it gradually grew into a full-fledged hit, and during the pandemic it received a new surge of attention thanks to streamers and the online community.
Later, the game was released on consoles, and in 2025 it received versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S — and all this without any sequel.
That is why any mention of “Rust 2” is automatically perceived as something real, not a fantasy.
Is it a mistake, a test, or something more?
At the time of publication, the Rust 2 Steam page is still available, and this is perhaps the strangest moment in the entire story. Usually such things are quickly deleted if it really is a mistake.
It is still unknown what it really was:
-
the internal blank
-
of the test page
-
is a technical glitch
-
or just an unfortunate joke
But even after the official denial, the feeling of “smoke without fire” still remains.
With the launch of s&box, which is expected in the near future, attention to Facepunch Studios will only increase. And although Rust 2 does not officially exist now, the very idea of a sequel has clearly not disappeared from the minds of the players.
Sometimes such stories end in nothing. And sometimes they become the first hint of the future.
