However, this path cannot be called ideal. The plot, although not annoying, does not grab: the motivation of the characters and the general narrative serve more as a background than a driving force. Some elements of the game design also raise questions. For example, sprinting feels unnaturally slow, and in certain areas of the semi-open world it is easy to get lost – navigation is not always obvious. At times, the game loses momentum, sometimes dragging on, sometimes throwing out overly powerful mechanics like overly effective backstabs. In addition, the balance of boss fights jumps: some are defeated on the first try, while others drive you to madness with their complexity and demandingness.

On a technical level, Wuchang also needs some improvement. Despite the well-designed character and environment models, some textures — especially on secondary objects — look blurry and sloppy. On Steam Deck, the situation is more complicated: a stable 30 FPS remains unattainable, and the game lags even in the least intense scenes. The game has not yet received a separate sign from Valve, so users of the portable console can only wait for further optimizations and patches.

The bottom line? Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is an interesting attempt to bring its own vision to the genre inspired by the Dark Souls series, with an exotic setting and decent gameplay. Combat System in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

If you’ve ever played Soulslikes, the combat in this game will seem painfully familiar. Health and stamina bars are in place, buttons for light and heavy attacks are also there, and there’s no need to even mention rolls. Theoretically, all this is enough to go through the entire game from start to finish – the developers do not limit your fighting style. But, as always, there are ways to make everything a little more effective. For example, use special skills that are tied to the type of weapon and are activated by a separate button.

Of course, you can avoid enemy attacks not only by rolling – the parry system is also present. It is somewhat reminiscent of the one in Lies of P, but with one nuance: here they do not place special emphasis on it. It is much easier and more reliable to go behind the enemies after dodging and strike from there. Those who like to customize their character for themselves will like the local skill tree – it is not just large, it really affects the style of play. Each path has its own philosophy of combat, and it feels like that. If we talk about my experience, then dodging in most cases turned out to be much more useful than parrying. Especially against bosses, who, in addition to health, also have a stamina scale. Have you seen it? You know what to do – break it without hesitation.

There is also magic in the game, although here it is called “Heavenly Powers”. It works as a local analogue of mana: you can spend it on a variety of actions:

• Using magical attacks and spells
• Enhanced special attacks
• Instant weapon change (if two types are equipped)

Each of these abilities is not only useful, but also effectively animated, so the fight looks spectacular and stylish.

And there is also an inner demon living in Vuchan. It seems cool – he summoned it, it destroyed all the enemies. But here’s the problem – the demon doesn’t distinguish between his own and his enemies, and can easily hit Vuchan herself. So use it wisely. The basic things of the genre are also in place, of course. A healing flask with a limited number of uses, replenished at “bonfires” (in this game, these are small temples), and various consumables that are not restored after resting. Everything as it should be – and even a little more.

And most importantly – the game is fair. Here, the winner is not the one with the stronger button, but the one who understands the mechanics better. If other soulslikes gave you difficulties, don’t expect an easy walk. But there are no unpleasant surprises here either, like dishonest bosses with stupid hitboxes. Despite its rough edges, Wuchang is a fresh and vibrant addition to the Souls-like genre. Its visual style, madness mechanics, depth of progression, and well-thought-out weapon system make it worth the attention of anyone who enjoys challenging and atmospheric action games. It may not be the perfect representative of the genre, but it certainly deserves a place in the collection of fans.

Pros:

Wuchang immerses you in a mystical world inspired by ancient China, where every corner breathes an atmosphere of anxious peace and ancient power. The game is distinguished by its variety of locations: somewhere you wander among bright colors and the whisper of nature, and somewhere you walk through bloody halls, as if from a nightmare. The visual style is one of the strongest points of the project.

The mechanics of madness is a feature that significantly distinguishes Wuchang from other Souls-like games. The higher the level of madness of your hero, the stronger he becomes … but also more vulnerable. This dual system creates an exciting sense of risk and gives the player a powerful tool for tactical play. The branched skill tree is a pleasant surprise – it gives room for real experimentation. The choice of a branch of abilities affects the style of combat, and the flexibility of the system allows you to adapt the build to yourself at any time. It’s even deeper than in Nioh, and you can feel that the developers gave free rein to their imagination.

Boss fights are a separate art. They require not only reaction, but also strategy: some have to be “caught” with counterattacks, others – burned at a distance with magic or bullets. Each fight is unique, and does not allow you to relax. Fans of armor collections will not be left out either – armor here is not just for protection, but for inspiration. Almost every set has an interesting appearance and makes you want to collect them all.

The game is full of secrets and hidden locations that you will not find if you just follow the story. Unexpected bosses, secret areas and sudden discoveries make the passage rich and memorable. The weapon system is something. Each weapon has its own specifics, abilities, and “blessings” give it unique modifications. Where else can you find a blade that turns into a whip?

Disadvantages:

The plot and overall narrative, alas, are inferior to the atmosphere. There are not enough developed characters and those mysterious stories that come to life in other Souls-like games. The main character is also not developed – there are few lines, and her character remains behind the scenes.

Some levels suffer from “overkill” with traps. Instead of a pleasant exploration, you feel like you are in a mined fortress: one step to the side – and you are dead. This makes the game not tense, but tedious at times.

There are problems with control response. Sometimes blows from enemies hit you from an incomprehensible distance, and the block does not always work on time, even if you press exactly at the timing. Such bugs are annoying, especially in difficult battles.
