The Worms series has been developing in a rather unexpected direction for many years. Instead of becoming more hardcore and complex, the game is gradually becoming simpler and adapting to a casual audience. New versions are regularly released for mobile devices, and a version for Facebook has even appeared recently. And there is nothing strange about this – the Team17 studio, a small British team, is simply trying to survive in modern realities. Today, the market dictates its own rules: hardcore is not in fashion, and the mass user prefers simplicity.
All this is quite understandable, but for long-time fans of “Worms”, such a development of events is rather disappointing. I want to see how my favorite game matures along with the players, and does not go towards light mechanics. Interestingly, as it turned out, the developers themselves think the same. And Worms Revolution is, although not an ideal embodiment of “that very dream”, but, of course, a noticeable step forward compared to the previous experiments of the series.

Let’s say the main thing right away – Worms Revolution remained true to its roots: it’s the same classic two-dimensional tactics about worms, where every hit decides the fate of the battle. And no, 3D again did not become the main gaming plane – worms are simply uncomfortable in a three-dimensional world. Everything suffers there: balance, shooting accuracy, and the gameplay itself. But at the same time, the developers equipped the game with a full-fledged 3D engine, and this is an important innovation.
For the first time, the legendary pixel accuracy of hits is implemented on the basis of modern polygonal graphics. This immediately gave tangible advantages: now every explosion – be it a grenade or a bazooka – leaves on the map not just a graphic mark, but a real dent, funnel or breach. All this looks lively, natural and affects the game. New interactive objects have also appeared. Yes, there were barrels and mines before, but now there are also physical elements that can move, roll and destroy. For example, a huge shell can be blown up, and it will roll down the slope, sweeping away worms like an evil steamroller. And this is not just a show gimmick – it is part of the tactics.

But the main star of the updated physics is water. No, no, the classic “deadly” water at the bottom of the map is still in place: if you fall – that’s it, the worm drowns (remember the classic about “Chapayev’s feat”). But now new water will appear on the levels – internal water. It is locked in tanks, and if they are damaged, the liquid will immediately begin to spill across the map, filling all the lowlands and cavities. This is no longer just a visual effect – water behaves like real water, obeys physics, presses on everything around and is capable of deciding the outcome of matches. If the worm ends up in the water – everything does not happen right away. He won’t drown instantly, but will slowly start losing health with each move until he gets out. But it’s hard to get out: jumping in water is almost impossible, moving is hard, and shooting from the depths is a separate quest. The same bazooka, when fired from under water, may not fly further than the muzzle.
And this creates amazing tactical opportunities. See an enemy lair in a cave? Break through the ceiling, and the water from above will flood all the enemies. And if you are flooded – do not panic. There is a pump that will allow you to drain the water (almost like in a bathtub, when you pull out the plug). Or you can arm yourself with a water cannon and start pouring water on enemies, washing them off platforms or simply suffocating them.
And how can we not mention new types of weapons? One of them is the “landing”: a worm descends from the background and throws a grenade right at a given coordinate. Effectively, accurately and unexpectedly.

The main feature of Worms: Revolution
One of the features of the new 3D approach is, of course, full-fledged 3D models of the worms themselves. Unlike the pre-rendered characters in Worms Reloaded, here we get live, three-dimensional animation in real time. And this is not just cosmetics – the worms here are like real comedy actors: they make faces, grimace, scream in fear or pain, and now they also get bruises, lose teeth, get abrasions and black eyes. The developers admit that all this was done to make the game even funnier, and at the same time a little sadder: after all, this is a satire on a senseless war.

But that’s not all. For the first time in the history of Worms, worms began to differ from each other not only in face, but also in physique. Some have a strong belly, some barely fit on the screen, and some are thin and nimble, like a worm after coffee. All of this is a new class system implemented on a fresh engine. There are four of them:

Fighter — a classic all-rounder. Average stats in everything: health, speed, damage.

Scout — small, fast, and agile. Great for sabotage, but can’t withstand powerful attacks.

Heavyweight — slow, but hardy. It’s hard to move and even harder to destroy.

Scientist (telepath) — a healer and technician rolled into one. Heals allies, places turrets, and can control objects using telekinesis.
The fun begins when all of these classes start interacting. For example, you can swap worms via teleport, creating unexpected tactical combinations. Is the little one trapped? Swap him with a heavyweight — and it’s no longer he who’s under fire, but an armored tank.
Team17 clearly felt what the series has been missing in recent years. Perhaps this part will not reach the strategic depth of the old Worms, but the chosen vector inspires optimism. The game will be released on PC this fall – Worms Revolution promises to be not just a new step, but a real revolution in the worm world.
