These days, major game studios are less willing to go beyond secure content. The industry seems to be overgrown with invisible constraints: developers are afraid to joke “on the edge”, they avoid the topics of genocide, the Holocaust, racial hatred and any cruelty that may cause a flurry of criticism or the threat of “cancellation”. Against the background of total caution, teams that do not hesitate to show the dark sides of alternative history and do not make concessions to censorship stand out.
One of these rare exceptions remains the Swedish MachineGames studio, which managed not only to revive the legendary Wolfenstein series, but also to restore to it that powerful atmosphere, thanks to which the franchise once defined the genre of first—person shooters. In 2014, the developers relaunched the iconic universe, releasing the dynamic and darkly stylistic Wolfenstein: The New Order. It was followed by the prequel The Old Blood, which strengthened the plot basis of the rebirth of the series. And the final chord of this trilogy was Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, a large—scale sequel, which we’ll talk about today.
In this review, we’ll look at how the sequel came out: did the studio manage to develop the storyline, maintain the signature atmosphere of resistance, improve gameplay and expand the player’s capabilities without losing the sharpness of the narrative and the emotional power of the franchise.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus Free Steam Account
The Wolfenstein series has never really gone through a crisis. The first Castle Wolfenstein actually laid the foundation of the stealth-action genre, and the revolutionary Wolfenstein 3D opened the era of first-person shooters to the world, changing the idea of dynamic gameplay. Later, Return to Castle Wolfenstein became just a solid, confident action movie. Only the 2009 version left behind the feeling of an average project that did not meet the expectations of fans. At that time, it seemed to many that it was time to retire the franchise and give way to new brands.
But no, Blaskowitz took a break for five years and came back as if he had never left. The New Order, followed by the reference expansion The Old Blood, proved what modern action shooters should be: intense, tough, atmospheric, and incredibly cinematic. After such a relaunch, a full-fledged sequel was only a matter of time. A successful series that returned to the top of the genre clearly could not remain without a sequel — and Bethesda was well aware of this.

There was even less doubt at MachineGames Studio. The team, assembled from former employees of Starbreeze Studios, already had experience creating intense and stylish action games — from the iconic Chronicles of Riddick to the dark Syndicate and The Darkness. Therefore, there was no reason to doubt that Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus would meet the high standard. But still, why not see for yourself? We had the opportunity to play the sequel two and a half months before the official announcement, and we certainly didn’t miss this chance.

What is the new Wolfenstein about?
The first impressions reminded me of the demo shown at E3 2017, but a fresh look only enhanced the effect. The New Colossus starts in many ways in the spirit of The New Order — the game reintroduces us to the hero through his weakness. Only if Blaskowitz had previously spent fourteen years in a psychiatric clinic, where reality and hallucinations intertwined into an alarming cocktail, now he is physically exhausted and … simply cannot walk. The first level greets us with a strange contrast: the legendary Nazi hunter rides through the corridors of the Eva Hammer submarine in a wheelchair. But this does not at all deprive him of his fighting fervor — the enemies are flying apart as quickly as before. The atmosphere of tension, brutality and dynamic shootings is felt from the very first minutes.
However, it soon becomes clear that the situation is much more complicated. Blaskowitz is captured, and Irene Engel coldly orders her own daughter to kill him. The game cuts off the scene at the climax, leaving the question unanswered: will she follow the order? It is these sharp plot moves that create the very emotional density that the series is loved for.
The mystery is revealed later — already in the Roswell mission, which we went through at a private screening. Here, at the same table, we see Frau Engel’s daughter, William himself, already standing on his own two feet, and members of the scattered resistance. It would seem that everything is in order, everyone is alive. So it’s time to start the second American revolution. Moreover, even the so-called “good Germans” who decided to fight against the Nazi regime appear among the allies.

MachineGames seems to be well aware of what exactly worked in the updated Wolfenstein universe, and what needed to be improved. In The New Colossus, the studio confidently pushes the “right buttons”. From the very first minutes, it is noticeable that the project has made significant strides forward in visual terms: improved textures no longer hurt the eye, the details of the environment have become much richer, and the overall picture looks solid and modern. We can only hope that optimization will not let us down either — the id Tech 6 engine has performed well in DOOM, so it is more than logical to expect stable FPS and smooth gameplay. Moreover, MachineGames does not rely on the technological race, but prefers to work with atmosphere and dynamics.
Both The New Order and The Old Blood are remembered for their presentation — an unusual mix of alternative history, a victorious Reich and a neatly constructed grotesque that never descended into farce. It would seem that the plot about ancient Jewish orders, mysterious technologies and combat robots could easily turn into a parody, but the authors presented this argument with a serious face. It was this kind of presentation that formed a recognizable atmosphere and made the universe convincing, despite all its fantasticism.
In The New Colossus, the developers don’t just keep this style — they take it to a new level. The scale increases in literally everything. It is known that hundreds of actors worked on the project — and this is felt in the richness of animation, expressive characters and more emotional cut scenes. The video clips have become longer, the staging more entertaining, and the dialogues in the short moments of exploring the levels are sometimes worthy of a separate film. That episode with the Kukluk clan is just one example of the trademark humor and satire organically woven into the harsh history of the resistance.
In spirit, the game still resembles that crazy “Iron Sky”, but it’s much better served: bright, bold, with full-fledged drama and the very stylistic “extravaganza” that has become the hallmark of the series. Die Käfer is still on stage — and the show continues.
Wolfenstein II Gameplay
The gameplay of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus has undergone changes, but has remained true to its roots. It hasn’t turned from a brutal shooter into anything else — there’s still speed, hardcore combat, and that same raw, almost tangible physicality that fans love about the series. The shooting feels great, each hit gives a recognizable recoil, and the continuous dynamics do not allow you to relax for a second. A noticeably expanded perk system has been added to the game — now the character’s progress has become more thoughtful and requires careful selection, although it still remains a secondary element.
Less welcome news is that the collectibles haven’t disappeared. This controversial gameplay element still occupies locations, although there is no real benefit from searching for “souvenirs”. There is no need to wait for large—scale weapon improvements or hidden modifications, as in DOOM – the developers have maintained moderation.

But what has really changed? Here are the key points that catch your eye already in the first hours of the game:

There is more verticality in the levels — the arenas have become multi-level and create room for tactics.

A more ragged rhythm of fights — short pauses alternate with aggressive fights, as in the best action games.

The enhanced role of the soundtrack — Mick Gordon’s music now has a stronger effect on the atmosphere of the fight.

Flexible battle scenarios — you can alternate stealth and furious assault almost at will.
Even in the introductory version available to us, the spirit of the last hit of the year could be felt: short breaks are replaced by intense gunfights, and a powerful soundtrack highlights the chaos. There are no finishing mechanics here: close combat is possible, but there will be no special bonuses for it.
Important elements for the series have also been preserved. If you wish, you can try to go through the area with stealth — quietly knock out the officers so that they do not have time to call for reinforcements. True, it is almost inevitable that we will soon have to move on to the usual chaos with dozens of enemies, but the very possibility of a strategic approach remains pleasant.
The arsenal has become even more flexible: weapons can now be combined as you like — a machine gun in one hand, a shotgun in the other? You are welcome. The restriction applies only to particularly heavy guns, such as a plasma cannon that can be lifted from a broken robot. However, given the development of the hero, it cannot be ruled out that closer to the finale, Blaskowitz will be able to manage them more freely. In the Roswell demonstration mission, where the Nazis are making full use of the alien technology of Area 51, our hero had to operate with a measly 50 health units. Terror Billy was repaired, but not completely. But whether he lives in his body or walks with a transplanted head is a question that the creators are still skillfully hiding.
It feels like Wolfenstein has remained the same — bright, aggressive and endlessly fascinating. The same rich plot, lots of funny and dark references to alternative history, cinematic inserts and liters of adrenaline in every shootout. Except that it has become a little more difficult: even the average difficulty makes you pay more attention. The enemies have not become smarter, but there are more of them, they are more diverse and more dangerous. In addition to heavy robots that require multiple clips, there are also fast—moving mechanized fighters who attack more sharply and maneuver more actively – it has become more interesting to play.
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus boldly claims to be one of the main releases of the fall. The story of The New Order and The Old Blood continues — from the same team, but on a modern engine, with an increased budget, on a large scale and without unnecessary experiments. There will definitely not be a repeat of the sad path of Mirror’s Edge here.
