Even armor penetration is calculated not just any old way, but according to formulas close to those used in real combat simulators – angles of impact, caliber, and vulnerable zones are taken into account.

If you want to not just throw troops into battle, but win at high difficulty levels – be prepared to learn. Each unit in the game is unique, and its strength depends not only on the name, but also on the type of weapons, firing range, specialization. For example, an infantry squad is not just people with rifles. These are machine gunners, machine gunners and fighters with anti-tank weapons – and each type has its own effective range and targets. Understanding WARNO’s Core Mechanics: Units, Visibility, and Objectives
Despite the huge number of nuances, WARNO has several basic mechanics, without understanding which it is almost impossible to survive in this strategy.
First of all, the main feature of the game: the reinforcement call system. Unlike the usual RTS, where the army is built right at the base, everything is different here. You do not create new units, but call them from the rear – from outside the map. First, they arrive at the edge of the playing field, and from there they get to the front line. Such a system makes it impossible to instantly respond to changes on the battlefield – so a chaotic rush will not work: everything requires calculation and planning.
Each unit costs a certain number of call points (in the early version they were called command posts). This is the main resource in the game: it is awarded slowly during the battle, but you will get the most points for completing tasks or controlling key points. Before the start of the match, you receive a starting supply of points and form an army – the same one that you chose when preparing for the battle.

To successfully play WARNO, it is worth remembering the key principles:

The battle begins with the deployment of troops on your side of the map. The enemy has everything the same. The map also has control points – strategically important zones. Whoever controls them gets more resources and an advantage in the battle. But they are not easy to capture – you need to hold them, which means preparing for defense.
Although the entire map is immediately available for viewing, this does not cancel the “fog of war”. It just works differently: you do not see enemy units until they enter the field of view of your soldiers. Each unit has its own viewing radius, which depends on its role and position. Scouts, for example, can see further than regular infantry, and soldiers on high ground have a better view than those hiding in the lowlands. It is interesting that in early builds of the game, you could view the visibility zone of a specific squad (via a special button under the minimap), and when one of them spotted an enemy, the entire army immediately received information. This allowed other units, if they were within range, to engage in combat and support their ally.

However, there are also difficulties with positioning. Even if you indicated where to go, soldiers can slightly adjust their point themselves – for example, take a position with better cover. This can help, but it is better to double-check where exactly they stood. And do not forget about the fire sector. This is especially important for armored vehicles. If, say, a tank is pointing its turret in the right direction, it can instantly open fire. But if the enemy is on the flank, the tank will have to turn the turret (and sometimes the hull), losing precious seconds. Often, this is what decides the fate of the vehicle.
Moving in WARNO is not the easiest thing either. Infantry needs to line up or disembark correctly before moving on. Equipment needs to turn around, start up, and sometimes even spin around in place. The paved roads in the game speed up movement so much that your units themselves try to choose the shortest route across the road, even if it means making a detour of a couple of hundred meters.
Best Tactics and Strategies to Win in WARNO
Every successful action you take on the battlefield — be it capturing an important position, destroying valuable enemy equipment, or holding back an attack — brings you closer to victory. This is not a game about one big battle, but about a chain of small but important tactical decisions. The winner is the one who can skillfully combine combat groups and adapt to the situation on the front.

The simple formula of “killed more than lost” won’t work here. You are not controlling a squad, but an entire army — and this imposes its own requirements. One successful tank breakthrough can turn into a catastrophe if the enemy sends attack helicopters into the sky in time. And sitting on the defensive for too long will not end well if artillery starts working on you.
How to win in WARNO: basic principles

Reconnaissance is your main insurance.
Don’t throw it into battle unless it’s a matter of survival. Reconnaissance is needed to uncover enemy positions in advance and prepare – it is thanks to it that you can correctly aim artillery and avoid an ambush. -
Combat links: armor and infantry.
Tanks and motorized infantry are an excellent link. They move at the same speed, are well protected and are capable of waging a powerful fight. But it is important not to rush forward – coordinate their actions with regular infantry, which is especially useful in forests, buildings and other shelters. There, it effectively dislodges the enemy from occupied positions. -
Capture key points.
At the start of the battle, try to occupy transport hubs and important positions. The sooner you cut off the enemy’s advance, the easier it will be to control the map. Advance combat groups to such points, but do not scatter them chaotically. Form a chain in which a squad supports a squad – this way you can quickly “transfer” fire along the front. -
Have you secured your positions? Secure yourself.
When the first combat groups take up positions, call for reinforcements – more infantry, especially in the area of control points. This will become your support zone. From here you can begin a systematic displacement of the enemy, but avoid crowding and one-directional attacks. It is better to attack from different sides and with the support of neighboring squads. -
Do not forget about air defense and artillery.
Air support is expensive, but even a simple anti-aircraft gun can easily shoot down an enemy helicopter. Therefore, you should have air defense from the very beginning. Artillery will come in handy to suppress fortified positions or hinder the enemy’s advance. But do not forget: for accurate fire, it needs up-to-date intelligence. And be sure to move the guns after several volleys – otherwise they will cover you with a counterattack.
Only a command unit can capture a point – it is marked with an asterisk. This can be a tank, infantry or supply unit. If your regular infantry is on the point without a commander, it will not hold it. Moreover, if only an enemy commander is on it, he will take the point even in the presence of your fighters. Therefore, always make sure that the commanders are in place – they are not just there for show.
Setting up control in WARNO
In the best traditions of classic RTS, the WARNO developers took an important step: they allowed the player to pre-set the behavior of the entire army through settings. These are not just technical parameters – this is how your units will behave from the first seconds of the battle. You set up the necessary patterns once, and they are automatically applied at the start of each mission. Of course, if you want, you can change everything right during the battle.

To do this, go to “Settings” – “Gameplay” tab. Here you will find a lot of useful things. For example, the “Behavior: Advance” parameter allows you to choose between “normal movement” and “movement with attack”. The first option is safer: you can always press Q and give the order to attack manually when the time comes.
Here are a few more important parameters that are worth customizing for yourself:

Vehicle movement and cover — set it to “fast” if you want armored vehicles to travel on roads. Experienced players can choose the “short” route for better manual control.

Infantry movement — it’s better to choose the “with cover” option so that soldiers can find a safe path themselves.

Passive behavior of soldiers — turn on “automatic cover search”. If a soldier is left without an order, he will immediately try to take cover.

Reaction to an inaccessible enemy — set it to “aggressive” so that the squads themselves decide when to retreat and when to try to inflict damage.

Reaction to unarmed vehicles — select “shoot”. This will save you from enemy reconnaissance drones and supply vehicles.

Missile unit behavior — the “all units” mode allows ATGMs and SAMs not to wait for an order, but to immediately work on enemy targets, including helicopters with troops.

It all depends on the type of troops on the basis of which your combat vehicle is formed.

But don’t worry, over time everything will fall into place. Each unit here is not just a picture, but a full-fledged 3D model with a detailed description: armor, speed, firing range, specialization — everything you need to understand what it is capable of in battle. Take a look at the characteristics — this is your guide to the world of military tactics.

Before heading out onto the battlefield, carefully study the units included in the army you’ve chosen. For example, a balanced army can handle almost any challenge thanks to its flexibility. But a specialized army, say, a tank army, is great for an aggressive breakthrough, but may be vulnerable to air raids. And remember: you can’t call in a fighter who isn’t in your army – the set of units is strictly limited by the division.
To avoid drowning in this sea of possibilities, start small. Choose one army from the USSR and one from the USA, and play a couple of matches in a single-player campaign on an easy level. One battle for the Soviets, the second for NATO. This way, you’ll feel the difference in styles and begin to understand who’s capable of what.
