Each state has its own price: a conditional Nigeria will cost only one point, but it will bring almost no political weight. But Poland or Iraq will require three influence points already, but control over them will bring stable bonuses. Each part of the world has its own key countries: for example, in Europe it is France, Great Britain, both Germany and unexpected Romania, and in Central America Cuba will become a strategic point. By taking over such territories, the player gets a real lever of pressure on the opponent.

But what if the enemy has gained a foothold in the region and holds 5-6 points of influence? There are coups going on here. This is a risky but extremely effective way to dislodge the enemy from a strategic position and seize the initiative. However, you can’t do without the element of chance — and that’s where the most controversial element of mechanics comes into play: the cube. He adds randomness, which means he can both help realize an ideal plan and destroy it with one throw. Because of this, coups, the space race and even the Olympics, presented in the form of cards, sometimes turn into a real roulette. Yes, the more action points on the map (from 1 to 4), the higher the chance of success, but there is still no absolute guarantee. It’s no wonder that many players dream of getting rid of this “cubic asshole”.

The DEFCON system deserves special attention. This is a scale of global tension, where 5 means cold equilibrium, and 1 means the beginning of a nuclear catastrophe. If the level drops to one during the opponent’s turn, you automatically win, even if the situation looks immoral. However, there are more peaceful ways to succeed: for example, to win a space race or score victory points.

The final goal is simple: be the first to reach the 20-point mark or have more points than the opponent when the game comes to an end. The round ends when both players have no cards left. There are ten such rounds in total, and during this time, anything can happen: from an attempt to destroy the world to a race to land on Mars. But if no one achieves the decisive victory conditions—whether it’s scoring 20 points or completing global scenarios—the player with the most victory points at the end of the game wins.

Multiplayer and game experience

What about the multiplayer in Twilight Struggle? Everything is implemented quite familiarly here: you can create your own game and wait for a random player to connect to you, or invite a friend directly. If there are no friends nearby, there is always a quick search — the system will automatically select an opponent.
