After all, in essence, it is just a form of government in which all power is concentrated in the hands of one person. And what kind of person he turns out to be – a cruel despot or a wise and fair leader – depends not on the system, but on the person himself.

Irony, sarcasm and a parade of absurd phrases are the order of the day. It becomes especially funny when representatives of factions or foreign powers join the conversation: the sheikh, for example, with enviable regularity offers not only money for a deal, but also a camel – as they say, a must-have for any dictator.

But Tropico is not only jokes and caricature politics. The game surprises with how easy it is to get involved in it, and at the same time – how deeply it is developed. There are no faceless NPCs here: each inhabitant of your island is not just statistics, but a full-fledged person with an opinion, character, beliefs and demands. And all this is not just for show. You can click on any citizen and get a full biography, right down to their place of birth and family tree.

Of course, residents do not just walk back and forth – they have needs. And everything depends on how well they are satisfied: your popularity, the outcome of the elections and even the possibility of an uprising. If people have nothing to eat, nowhere to live and nowhere to go to relax – expect trouble. You will have to build housing complexes, bars, put up statues and pour rum. Yes, yes, rum is an integral part of national happiness. But its production is not a one-click process: first we sow the fields with sugar, then we send the harvest to the factory, and only after all this effort will the bottle end up on the shelf.

And so – in everything. Want to build a power plant? Great, but where will you get engineers? You’ll have to establish education first: schools, colleges, a literate population. Do you dream of getting rich by producing furniture? You’ll have to do it step by step: first, deforestation, then a sawmill, and only then a furniture factory. Of course, you can simplify things: import resources or hire foreign specialists. But be prepared – you’ll have to pay handsomely for such comfort, and this can quickly empty the treasury.

In fact, no one forces you to please every whim of the people. If you want, build a paradise on earth, or if you want, introduce an iron dictatorship with a curfew, mass repressions and public executions for the slightest discontent. Of course, such an approach is unlikely to bring you the laurels of a people’s favorite, but who is ultimately right? The one with more soldiers, more guns and fewer doubts. Right?

But it is important to remember: the world is not limited to your island. Beyond the tropical paradise is the second half of the 20th century, the era of the Cold War. And if in your home country you are a king and a god, then abroad you will have to maneuver between two superpowers – the United States and the Soviet Union. As long as you are convenient for them, there will be help, loans and humanitarian aid. But if you stumble, one of the parties may consider you a “threat to stability” – then beware: a landing party will land from the sea, and your place at the throne will be taken by the one who is more pleasing to external “partners”.

Though it’s not all that gloomy. Politics is not only threats and sanctions, but also the art of diplomacy. A real El Presidente will always find a way to get out of trouble: he will promise reforms to someone, appease someone with a couple of boxes of rum. The main thing is to keep your ears open and not give a reason to turn a tropical resort into an arena of international conflict.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of Tropico 4

Writing reviews of economic strategies of this level is not an easy task. It is easy to get sidetracked and instead of a review slide into a detailed guide: there are too many possibilities here, I want to talk about each one. Perhaps this is love. The author, who was once captivated by such games and then disappointed, had a hard time tearing himself away from building his own banana empire to sit down and write these lines.

Of course, there are some downsides. The main problem is monotony. Yes, the tasks themselves in the campaign are not repeated, but the essence of the actions on each new island often comes down to the same thing:

• Build housing for workers
• Start farms and resource extraction
• Organize logistics: roads, ports, transport
• Boost the economy and satisfy the basic needs of the population
• And… repeat everything from the beginning on the next island

At first, this approach is addictive — you build, plan, and calculate with passion. But by the fourth or fifth island, a slight sense of “déjà vu” appears: everything from scratch again, farms again, houses again… And yet, this is perhaps the only thing that Tropico 4 can be reproached for. In all other respects, it is almost flawless. The game is stable, looks decent, and plays nicely. And considering that the genre is currently in a calm, it has almost no worthy competitors.
