However, the positive side is that the domestic indie scene is experiencing a real renaissance and, it seems, has reached its impressive apogee. Over the past few years, we have witnessed the emergence of many bright and original projects, both fully completed and in early access. However, it is fair to say that only a select few of them will be able to win the love of a wide audience. Today, I want to tell you about one of such exceptional examples.
As the chief editor of a resource dedicated to Russian visual novels, I was lucky enough to take part in a number of truly fascinating projects. From my professional point of view, Bunny stands out among them – a work realized by the hands of true masters who approached their craft with the utmost passion and dedication. The path to creating this visual novel was not an easy one: the project faced many doubts regarding both the script and the original concept, as well as the vision of its creative leader, known by the pseudonym Saikono Joker. Despite all the obstacles, the team behind Bunny poured their heart and talent into it, demonstrating what can be achieved when creative energy and perseverance unite for a common goal. Five years after its major launch on Steam, “Bunny” has not only gained recognition but also earned the affection of fans across the globe. On May 31 of this year, the much-anticipated fourth episode was finally released, shattering many fan theories and significantly increasing the story’s intensity and brutality. Its first disturbing trace is a bloody mitten found in the dark depths of the forest, an object that evokes a painful sense of threat and gives rise to an endless number of guesses. Without revealing the main turning points, it is worth noting that the first episode stands out for its restrained, almost intimate mood. It serves as an introduction to a rapidly growing storm of events, where the internal and external contradictions of the family intertwine in a chain of tense episodes, forming an active plot imbued with an atmosphere of anxiety and tension.
Even with the tense wolf chase scene and several chilling episodes from a mysterious TV show, the narrative of “Bunny” develops steadily, surprising with its unpredictability and choice of locations. As you can see in the excerpts, the entire picture is built exclusively in black and white. Moreover, if you look closely at the text, you will not find a single mention of colors or halftones. This deliberate artistic technique creates a severe, almost ascetic atmosphere, which greatly enhances the emotional density of what is happening. In the future, I will definitely talk in more detail about the reasons for such a stylistic choice. The second episode attracts attention by introducing two significant characters at once, whose stories develop in parallel, forming independent, but intersecting plot lines. Arriving at a new school, Anton first deals with a local bully – a stocky and self-confident Semyon, who immediately demonstrates his superiority. After this unpleasant acquaintance, Anton meets Polina, a city diva and gifted violinist, whose grace and virtuoso playing immediately captivate his imagination. Their meeting hints at a more interesting development of their relationship, which promises to surprise the reader in the future.

Another crucial storyline centers on the enigmatic girl Alice, who dons a playful mask of a red fox. To sum it up, while the townsfolk put on serious adult facades, Alice invites Anton to revel in an everlasting childhood filled with sweets, gum, and video games all year long. She believes that growing up is overrated and that school is a true evil that stifles creativity and joy.
In contrast, Polina embodies all the kindness and light that persists within the dreary walls of this monotonous school. With her by his side, Anton feels a refreshing sense of brightness and charm that makes even the dullest days enjoyable. Notably, both characters are voiced by the same talented actress, Kristina Sherman, yet you could never tell they sound the same or flat. Each voice brings its own unique flavor, making the characters truly memorable. Naturally, the emphasis we place on either Polina or Alice will shift the narrative tone and influence Anton’s standing with his new classmates. This subtle shift in focus is significant, as it shapes how he is perceived in this new environment. Nevertheless, the children will continue to disappear regardless of this focus. Vova was the first to go, leaving a noticeable gap, followed by Semyon at the end of the second episode, which left everyone in shock, and then…

In the third episode, she receives a brief but impactful story arc where the local troublemaker, Roma, continues his relentless attempts to charm her, accompanied by his comical sidekick, Byasha. At the same time, some facts cast doubt on the exact link of the narrative to 1998. It is known that in the winter months of that year, “Sailor Moon” was no longer broadcast on the air, since the 2×2 TV channel stopped broadcasting. Moreover, even during its existence, the channel was not available throughout the entire territory of Russia. This fact allows us to assume that the events described are, with a high probability, localized in the Moscow region, where access to the airwaves of central channels was maintained longer.

Adding to the excitement is the fact that in this fourth episode, players can reach one of the game’s endings ahead of time. Some may view this as a valid alternative to the full experience, but I genuinely believe that the fifth episode will surprise and delight the numerous fans of the project in unexpected ways. The narrative continues to evolve, leaving fans eager for what comes next.

Although Katya does not evoke much sympathy, none of the heroes wish her a fatal fate. And yet it is worth remembering: the creators of this story are in no hurry to play along with the expectations of the players.

There’s no doubt that the vibrant and well-crafted storyline of “Bunny” is just one essential aspect of its overall success. If Mr. Saikono weren’t a seasoned artist with significant experience or didn’t have a dedicated team of skilled translators, editors, and sound engineers at his disposal, the narrative likely wouldn’t be as captivating or engaging for the audience. The other half of its triumph lies in the striking black-and-white visuals that create a unique atmosphere, the engaging and memorable soundtrack, the voice performances from a wide range of talented actors, and surprisingly, the let’s plays by Dmitry Kuplinov that brought additional attention and interest. This situation is genuinely exceptional, as none of the visual novels that the cheerful bespectacled gamer has engaged with became more popular or successful afterward. Yet, “Bunny,” with its stunning graphics, compelling storyline, rich cultural references that resonate with players, and a variety of gameplay elements that keep things fresh and exciting, managed to soar to the top of the charts. This remarkable achievement is quite well-deserved given its lengthy and intricate creation process, which involved countless hours of hard work and creativity.

They struggle to believe that events could unfold in such a dark and unexpected manner, attributing this drastic shift to the financial troubles facing the PsychoNo team or a mindless imitation of familiar Hollywood horror tropes that fail to resonate with the story’s original charm.
Honestly, it’s much simpler than it appears at first glance. The script for “The Bunny” was crafted long before and is currently just undergoing some final polishing. Similarly, the voice acting wasn’t recorded gradually, episode by episode; it was done all at once in a single session. This means that everything unfolding now, including the frustration from unhappy fans, was anticipated and planned out well in advance; the team simply needed to create the vast amounts of graphics and organize everything meticulously in the script. As a result, the fifth episode, no matter how cheerful and uplifting it was originally intended to be, likely won’t turn out quite as such. However, we still have at least six months ahead of us to discover whether this is indeed the case or if things might take a surprising turn.

In conclusion, why can “Bunny” be boldly regarded as the finest visual novel ever produced in Russia? Saikono boasts an impeccable reputation, steering clear of public disputes and generally sidestepping controversies. With a few notable exceptions—where he often finds himself caught in the middle—he has managed to maintain a positive image. His team consists of numerous individuals well-versed in the VN landscape, all of whom bring unique skills and insights to the project. Their participation in “Bunny” will certainly add significant value to their portfolios and enhance their professional prospects. Does this seem like an effort to latch onto Saikono’s success? It’s worth noting that five years ago, a prominent figure in the RuVN community openly doubted the project’s quality, which adds an interesting layer to this narrative. While it might not be my place to comment on the past, I can say from personal experience that “Bunny” has truly eclipsed many of its peers and set a new standard. No matter how you classify the game—be it good, bad, overly childish, or excessively brutal—the reality exists somewhere in the middle, reflecting a complex blend of artistry and storytelling. Well, I think it’s time for us to conclude our discussion and reflect on the impact this game has had on the genre.
