The Room was born thanks to a small group of enthusiasts, when several developers left the famous Criterion Games (Burnout, Black) and founded their own studio, Fireproof. This British team consisted of only six people, but their experience and creativity allowed them to quickly make themselves known. At first, they outsourced, helping large projects like Blur, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone and Split/Second, creating graphics and elaborate visual elements. However, the developers soon realized that they wanted to release something of their own.
Initially, Firewall Studios considered only mobile platforms. This choice was dictated not only by a limited budget — creating a game for PC or consoles would require much more resources — but also by the desire to unlock the potential of touch control. The team wanted to make an original project where the atmosphere, music and the convenience of interacting with the screen would work for full immersion.
At that time, the decision turned out to be incredibly far-sighted. By 2012, the mobile gaming market was littered with mediocre ports and crude experiments that could rarely catch a player. Therefore, a carefully crafted atmospheric idea had every chance to stand out and attract attention.

The main source of inspiration was oriental puzzle boxes — elegant and complex mechanisms that require care and patience. They suggested the genre direction of the future game. An additional impetus was Zen Bound, a meditative mobile project, whose visual and atmospheric component showed Fireproof that a small studio can create a truly unique product.
Thus began the journey of The Room, a game that has managed to combine style, intrigue and an atmosphere of mystery, becoming an iconic puzzle game on mobile devices.

The History of The Room
To keep the players’ attention, the Firewall team decided to add a light horror atmosphere to the project. At the same time, the developers deliberately abandoned frontal “scares” and cheap screamers. The main role in creating an anxious mood was to be played by muted ambient melodies and subtle background sounds, such as the prolonged creaking of wood or the echo of empty space. It was these details that made the atmosphere of the game depressing and mysterious.
Initially, the future of The Room had the working name Puzzle Box, and the team chose Unity as the engine. Despite the fact that Firewall was more helpful to other studios at the time, and there were few resources of its own, the first prototype was assembled in just a couple of weeks. But even with modest efforts, the budget turned out to be above average for the mobile entertainment market. This was especially risky in the puzzle genre, where there were no dynamic action elements. Therefore, publishers refused to cooperate one by one, fearing failure.

As a result, the developers decided to go their own way. Firewall released The Room on its own, and the risk paid off: in 2012, the game was released on iOS and immediately attracted the attention of the audience. Six months later, thanks to the Humble Bundle, the puzzle reached Android.
The PC version might never see the light of day. Transferring to computers turned out to be much more difficult than expected: the usual finger control on touchscreens did not fit the mouse at all. To achieve the same gameplay quality, the developers had to rewrite a significant part of the source code and rethink the mechanics. Fortunately, by that time the team had grown to fourteen employees, and this is what made it possible to complete the adaptation.
