The peak of tension comes only in the last quarter, when it would seem time to sum up. The promising start gradually dissolves in banal dialogues, and only towards the end do we get some bright scenes. If you turn off critical thinking and just follow what’s happening, you can even enjoy it. But as soon as you listen to the dialogues, a comedy of inappropriateness begins. The lines seem hastily written, often devoid of logic or depth. Hence the constant feeling of awkwardness, as if you are watching a cheap TV series and waiting for the characters to start speaking like human beings. There are plenty of examples of awkward scenes, and this greatly undermines the immersion. The game seems to deliberately leave many questions unanswered. How does the time machine work? What kind of camera is this, why does it suddenly scare away evil? How does it all end, and why? Instead of a coherent story, we have the feeling of a prologue that forgot that it should become a full-fledged film. Everything seems to be moving, but why is unclear.

Players explore gloomy locations, collect collectible trinkets (which, frankly, are of no use) and conduct dialogues, choosing answers. At times, the game throws up puzzles, requires a quick reaction to some event or allows you to use the camera to avoid meeting Frank Stone himself. If you are familiar with the genre, all this will seem painfully familiar to you.

The developers tried to add a little Dead by Daylight atmosphere – for example, here you often need to repair generators to restore electricity. This is a nice reference, but, alas, this is where the gameplay practically ends.

Animations sometimes look clumsy – even a simple pickup of an object can seem unnatural. Not to mention that all this used to work much more stably. How the developers managed to ruin something that was already good is a mystery.
Nevertheless, the environment turned out to be atmospheric. An abandoned mansion, a gloomy factory – everything looks quite plausible. Light accents are placed wisely, and the darkness is felt not as a banal filter, but as part of the entourage. Although sometimes I had to go into the settings and turn the brightness to maximum – the screen literally turned into a black square. But overall, the visuals try to stay within the bounds of realism.

But things are worse with optimization. The game can suddenly throw a critical bug that completely breaks all progress. Falling through textures and autosaving in this state is a scenario you wouldn’t wish even on your worst enemy. Often, only a restart helps, and sometimes – replaying large chunks of the story. The picture is complemented by freezes and FPS drops. Everything we don’t like is right here. Let’s hope for prompt patches.
The situation with the voice acting is twofold. On the one hand, there is a full-fledged Russian localization, which is always nice. On the other hand, the quality of performance is poor. The plot unfolds in the Dead by Daylight universe, but it does so so casually that the connection with the original game is felt only at the level of Easter eggs and mood. For fans, this may be a nice little thing, but for newcomers, such references will be empty words – they simply don’t have enough context to understand what we are talking about. Frank Stone himself, around whom the narrative is built, looks like a template villain without depth, and his story, despite some interesting ideas, develops predictably and without fire.

It’s hard to shake the feeling that Supermassive Games didn’t put their heart into this project. The studio’s attention seems to be focused on its own franchise, The Dark Pictures Anthology, and especially on the next installment, Directive 8020.
