Who would have imagined a couple of years ago that the regular Tetris would not only be recognized as one of the best games of the year, but would also be made a timed exclusive at the launch of the new generation of consoles? Tetris Effect really lives up to all the praise and rave reviews that poured in after its release. And the updated version — Tetris Effect: Connected — has surpassed itself, making this classic arcade even more exciting and beautiful. This is where you can truly see that there is no limit to perfection!

A couple of years ago, I shared my impressions of the single-player modes of Tetris Effect, and to be honest, the game hasn’t changed much since then — and that’s not a bad thing. It still remains a real audiovisual feast for the eyes and ears, which can be truly appreciated even without a VR headset. The famous childhood gameplay, where you need to collect lines of falling figures, has been transformed into something much more in Tetris Effect thanks to the amazing musical accompaniment and realistic sounds of moving tetrominoes. Every time you remove a line, colorful visual effects flash in the background, which create a special atmosphere — as if you are immersed in a meditative state, where everything around seems to freeze and focus only on the rhythm of the game.
But the real gift for fans of team play is the Connected mode. If earlier Tetris Effect was perceived primarily as a solo entertainment, now the game has added multiplayer, which is not limited to the usual PvP. The main focus here is the co-op, where three players unite to fight AI-controlled bosses together. And the name of the mode — Connected — perfectly reflects the essence: to win, you need to work together, synchronously and flawlessly.

The game starts off quite calmly. Each of the three players has their own “glass” — a field where the figures fall. The fourth “glass” belongs to the boss. At first glance, everything seems simple: fill your glass, erase lines, do not let it overflow. But as soon as the enemy starts erasing his lines, the fun begins. With each cleared line, the players have obstacles — extra “garbage” lines with inconvenient holes that are difficult to close, the speed of the figures’ fall increases, and sometimes a huge, bulky part appears for which you need to find the perfect place. All this turns the process into a real test of attentiveness and reaction speed.
On the other hand, when the team successfully erases the lines themselves, together they fill the Zone scale – the same one from the single-player mode that allows you to literally stop time and gain a decisive advantage.
The most exciting part begins at the moment of Zone activation – three player fields merge into one large one. Now every move becomes important: one by one, players lay out their figures, trying to patch up the gaps that appear in the long lines. The more lines they manage to erase in a limited time, the more damage they inflict on the boss. This mechanic seems simple, but in fact it is incredibly exciting and deep. You literally feel how the team moves as a single organism: you see where your comrades are going to place a figure, and even without words you understand how best to coordinate. While one carefully moves the “stick” – a long narrow figure to close the bottom line, the other two are ready for their move and are already making plans for the next move.

At the start, only the easy difficulty level is available, and here you can often come across beginners who do one line and think for a long time, which slows down the overall pace of the battle. But with the opening of the average, and then high level, the game becomes much more dynamic and intense. Companions already play faster, and battles acquire a new level – with an expanded arsenal of bosses, each of whom has their own tricky techniques. Without a well-coordinated and experienced team, it is really difficult to succeed here. What is especially nice is that Connected does not lose the same magic as the single-player mode. This teamwork gives a new look at a familiar game and makes you feel each figure and each move in a new way. Over time, you begin to better understand the subtleties: for example, it is important to always have a “stick” at hand – you can keep it in reserve to use at the most opportune moment. You need to make sure that the glass is not empty, because otherwise during the battle with the boss there will simply be nothing to erase, and therefore, to inflict damage. And, of course, you can’t waste time before activating the Zone – you need to place the pieces as quickly and efficiently as possible until the last second to get the maximum benefit.

All PvP modes in Tetris Effect: Connected
Next to Connected, there are three PvP modes, each offering its own unique take on classic Tetris. Let’s start with Zone Battle – a kind of Tetris, but with an unusual mechanic from Tetris Effect, where there is a so-called Zone scale. During the game, the speed of falling pieces gradually increases, and players try not only to clear their own lines, but also to send these lines into the opponent’s glass, forcing him to play harder. When the Zone scale is completely filled, there is an opportunity to stop time – and at this moment you can erase lines one by one, literally “pile” five or ten lines on your opponent at once. It sounds cool, but in practice this scale often goes unnoticed: either I did not use it at all, or activated it only when the opponent reminded me. Perhaps, due to the intense gameplay, you simply forget about this opportunity.
Next comes the Score Attack mode – there are no time stops here, only pure competitive struggle for the maximum score. Both players try to erase lines as quickly and accurately as possible to score more points. If your glass overflows earlier and you “lose”, this is not a reason to give up – you can still win if you have accumulated more points by that time and cleared the lines faster. An interesting moment – when one of the players drops out, the other starts a timer, which does not allow him to “farm” points at a leisurely pace for a long time. This adds dynamics and does not allow you to relax.

And finally, Classic Score Attack – for those who value authenticity and do not like modern bells and whistles. In this mode, there is no Zone scale, no ability to keep figures in reserve, and there is not even the usual reset of tetrominoes with the “Up” button. This is exactly the classic Tetris as it was before, without any special effects and additional mechanics. This mode is ideal if you are annoyed by all sorts of newfangled “tricks”, but want to play in multiplayer really honestly and simply. True, due to the slower pace and lack of additional features, the game may not seem as exciting for those accustomed to modern Tetris.
All three PvP modes have a rating system – with victories your rating increases, with defeats it decreases. This is a great incentive to spend more time in multiplayer, trying to rise higher on the leaderboard. In addition to the personal rating, there is an overall average rating and rank, which you earn by participating in different modes and successfully playing in matches. The only thing missing here is the usual division into bronze, silver and gold, which is present in many other games. But you can see what percentage of players you are in based on your results, which also helps to understand how strong you are compared to others.

Thanks to these innovations, the game has become even more exciting and can drag you on for many hours.
