Some games don’t just become popular — they set the vector for an entire genre. Sudden Strike, which many of us remember under the name “Confrontation,” was just such a game. This military strategy inspired a whole wave of similar projects in the early 2000s, including the famous “Blitzkrieg.” Despite the fact that many years have passed since its release, the game still resonates in the hearts of fans — mods for Sudden Strike 2 continue to be released and gather a live audience.
But the third part, unfortunately, could not repeat the success of its predecessors. It passed almost unnoticed — neither veterans of the series nor newcomers really appreciated it. But the story did not end there. This year, the developers are making another bet — Sudden Strike 4 is coming to the stage.

The essence of classic strategies like Sudden Strike has always been one thing — give the player an army and throw him into the thick of military action. Infantry, tanks, artillery, air support and a couple of unique specialists like snipers or sappers — all of this was at your disposal. And then — improvise. Defend, set up ambushes, go behind enemy lines — your tasks could change, but the main thing remained unchanged: command in the full sense of the word.
No hints or outstretched hands — just a short order and your own decisions. How to fight, which side to go around the enemy from and when to fire — everything depended on your ingenuity. Sudden Strike skillfully balanced between wargame realism and the convenience of classic RTS: without overloading with complex parameters and technical characteristics, but also without a base stamping out soldiers for resources.

The battles felt large-scale: each soldier was a separate model, each tank was not just an icon, but a full-fledged unit on the field. The second part, for example, could boast battles with the participation of two thousand units on one map. The graphics at that time also looked decent and only enhanced the effect of presence.
When Sudden Strike 4 was announced, many expected a return to the roots. And on paper, everything looked encouraging: three full campaigns – for the Axis, the Allies and the USSR; clear objectives – hold the position, break through, capture; a minimum of conventions and maximum emphasis on single, like in the good old days. But reality, as often happens, turned out to be more complicated. The fourth part tries to be similar to its predecessors, and in some ways it really does resemble them, but, alas, it failed to fully revive the spirit of the original.

Why the new version of Sudden Strike 4 did not live up to expectations
Today, no one is surprised by the fact that old games are reissued under a new sauce. But, oddly enough, in the case of this series, a careful reworking according to the canons of the original could have been a winning solution. Instead, the Kite Games studio decided to rebuild everything in its own way – and, alas, completely in vain. It seems that the developers did not really play the previous parts: a lot was added just for the sake of it, and important elements were thrown out without much thought.
Let’s take, for example, the new system of commanders. At first glance, it’s cool: before the start of a mission, you choose a general with bonuses that affect the style of play. One strengthens the infantry, another – tanks, the third – gives tactical advantages such as quick repairs or reloading. Each has its own skills that are unlocked for stars earned in battles. It sounds flexible and promising, especially for a tactical strategy.

But in practice, everything falls apart: the game simply does not tell you which troops will be at your disposal in the next mission. You chose bonuses for armored vehicles — but in battle you are only given infantry. Or vice versa. It feels like these “improvements” were added from the multiplayer, without thinking about how they would work in the single-player campaign.
As you progress, you begin to notice other oddities. There are too many mechanics that are supposed to enrich the gameplay — and most of them are either unnecessary or do not work:

Dynamite that has nowhere to be used;

Ammunition and fuel that almost never run out;

The ability to open the commander’s hatch – without any real meaning;

Infantry landing on armor that does not provide any advantages;

Mines that are easier to destroy with a shot than to clear.
I tried to play “the old way”: artillery preparation, air strike, attack with tank support, planting mines, saving resources. And it worked. But something was still wrong.
The answer was unexpected. For the sake of an experiment, I simply selected all the squads and sent them to attack the main point, without thinking about tactics or formation. And – victory. A crowd of soldiers with equipment simply crushed the enemy with numbers, almost without losses. That’s it, no complex maneuvers, reconnaissance or thoughtful operations.
It was at this moment that everything fell into place. Why try to play smart when it’s easier and more effective to go head-on? Perhaps in the cramped French villages this strategy won’t work – the passages there are too narrow. But in other cases, good old “Zerg Rush” suddenly became the best solution.
Sudden Strike 4 Gameplay Flaws
And that, alas, is not all that the developers have “pleased” us with. The game has long-range artillery, which theoretically should change the course of the battle – but its radius barely exceeds the screen boundaries. And the implementation of the battles themselves is puzzling: the soldiers stupidly line up opposite each other and exchange shots, as if in a duel. No maneuvers, no meaningful tactics, no one even thought about the simple use of cover. And the neighboring squads, watching their comrades die nearby, continue to stand aside – as if all this does not concern them. Only the automatic reaction to shelling – soldiers can lie down without an order – slightly smooths out the impression.
But, perhaps, the most disappointing thing is the scale. More precisely, its complete absence. Forget about large-scale battles: here the fate of the world is decided at the level of a couple of platoons and several tanks. Sometimes, as in the mission “Kursk Bulge”, they give control over something larger, but only little by little and strictly dosed. Want a powerful tank attack or dense artillery shelling from dozens of guns? Forget it. The maximum is a couple of Katyushas, which hit at a ridiculous distance and fire a sluggish “puff” of a couple of rockets. The maps are tiny, as if you are playing on a scrap of a school notebook, and not on the battlefield. Some missions even take place along a narrow corridor, where the route is strictly prescribed – not a step to the side. At such moments, you feel not like a strategist, but a participant in a role-playing game with a combat group slightly larger than the standard party of six people.

And this is especially strange, because the game is positioned as part of the legendary series, where scale has always been almost the main feature. Hundreds of soldiers, dozens of units of equipment – that’s what we are used to seeing. What prevented us from repeating this now? Modern computers would have pulled it off. Even with such graphics – no problem. Maybe they wanted to focus on tactics, closer to games like “Behind Enemy Lines”? But then the mechanics would have to be thought out accordingly. And so – neither here nor there.
Of course, if you really want to, you can find bright sides. For example, the game looks good in dynamics – destructible environment, the ability to use shelters, nice visualization. There is also a mode with additional conditions – like “Test”, where, for example, air support is disabled or enemies are strengthened. But, you must agree, for a strategy, one picture and a couple of features are not enough. The ice under your feet can effectively crack, buildings collapse beautifully – but all this will not replace full-fledged gameplay and real tactics.
Is Sudden Strike 4 Worth Playing in 2025?
Of course, we can continue to hope for a miracle — that the modding community will be inspired by the spirit of the original, and that the developers will suddenly remember that a strategy game is not a set of random ideas, but a coherent and verified system. The example of No Man’s Sky shows that even a failed start can be corrected if you work on your mistakes. But in the case of Sudden Strike 4, this seems unlikely. All we have now is an unfinished, unfocused game that does not inspire either excitement or respect.
On paper, the project should have become a worthy successor to the legendary series. But in reality, it is a collection of mechanics that seem to have been pulled out of different games and not bothered to glue them together. There is no holistic vision, no competent setting of tasks. Instead of intense battles with tactical depth, there is a dull “shootout” at the level of a couple of platoons, which does not allow you to feel like a commander of a major battle.

What is especially sad is that this is not the first time. Blitzkrieg 3 started off just as uncertainly and was quickly forgotten, leaving fans of the genre to wait for something real again. It feels like no one wants to just take the original mechanics from old games, improve the graphics, interface, and release an honest remake. Without complaints, but with love for the material.

Miniature scale. Instead of the feeling of a large-scale operation, there’s a feeling that you’re managing a local skirmish somewhere on the sidelines of the main events.

Lack of progress. It’s hard to believe that this is a “continuation” of a great series – rather, it’s a separate game that has lost the essence of the original.
