But in reality, there are few such projects: most often, the promised “non-linearity” is limited to a couple of dialogues. But Stories: The Path of Destinies really makes you feel the weight of each decision. Here you want to replay the game again and again, trying other paths – because each choice leaves an imprint, changes the story, opens up new facets of the world and characters.

The story centers on a fox named Reynardo, a dashing and clever hero who decides to thwart the emperor’s sinister plans. He plans to awaken the ancient gods with the help of dark rituals, and Reynardo cannot stay away. The first important choices await the player literally from the first minutes, and then decisions will have to be made after each small chapter. Help a friend or give up everything for the sake of a powerful artifact? Take the enemy prisoner or let him go? There will be plenty of such moral dilemmas here.
The first playthrough will take only about an hour, but do not rush to conclusions. After the finale, you will be returned to the beginning – and for good reason. The true ending is revealed only to those who study all the plot forks and understand what drives the characters. You will have to play the game several times, each time choosing a different path. This is the only way to see the whole picture and put together the heroes’ motivations. Support one character – you will learn something important about him in the next cycle. These discoveries will allow you to find the “correct” ending one day.
An interesting detail: if in one of the playthroughs you found out that one of the heroes turned out to be a traitor, the narrator will remind you of this in other stories. There are four “truths” hidden in the game, and only their combination leads to the best ending. Sometimes a choice can lead to Reynardo’s death, and then you will have to go back and make a different decision. Although it sounds confusing, in fact, there are not so many characters, so it is quite possible to figure out what is happening.

Old locations are worth visiting not only for the sake of the plot, but also to find hidden secrets. Some doors can only be opened with swords with a special element – for example, you can only pass through a fire barrier with a flaming blade. Reynardo collects resources by breaking vases and opening chests, and then creates new types of weapons. Each of the four swords can be enhanced with an elemental effect, which makes battles much easier.
And there are plenty of battles here – enemies are found almost around every corner. Reynardo, although not a newbie, has long since retired, so he has to remember many skills from scratch. In battle, he earns experience, which is spent on pumping: you can increase health, strengthen counterattacks, speed up movement and even learn to perform a series of dodges in a row. The last ability is especially pleasing to fans of Hyper Light Drifter – however, there the hero could do rolls endlessly, but here there is still a limit.

Visual Style and Level Design
Among the enemies in the game, you often come across crows – but not just the usual ones that beat you up the old-fashioned way. There are also those that drag shields, preventing you from passing, and some even know how to heal their friends. And there are also strange flaming creatures – they breathe fire, and when they die, they turn into a mini-explosion. It seems to sound diverse, but in fact, each battle follows the same scenario: hit – jump back – hit again. You can dilute the process a little with the help of a hook, pulling opponents closer, but that’s where the tricks end. The hero does not possess magic, you can’t attach any spells to him.
But he can parry – and that’s good. As soon as an icon appears above the enemy’s head, just pull the stick in the right direction, and voila – the attack is repelled. The combat system doesn’t seem to get boring, but the lack of fresh ideas and the same opponents still make their contribution: by the middle of the game you start to catch yourself thinking that you want to finish another fight as soon as possible and move on.

The narrative also suffers because of this monotony. Let’s say you want to change your mind in the fourth chapter – alas, the game will send you to the very beginning, where you will have to go through everything in a circle again, clearing out already familiar locations. Fortunately, the narrator here is a real find. He not only voices the characters in a funny way, but also sprinkles jokes, sometimes successfully notices details, and sometimes simply enlivens the atmosphere with his delivery. Sometimes the humor falls into banality (yes, yes, they will also tell you about “a fox with a fiery sword is Firefox”), but sometimes it still makes you smile.
The authors approached the visual part with soul. The whole story is presented as an interactive fairy tale book, with beautiful illustrations and a warm atmosphere. Traveling around the world is pleasing to the eye – bright, picturesque locations replace each other, and even though they are linear, it is pleasant to explore them. Here and there you can find branches leading to hidden chests or bonuses, although you can’t call all this riddles.
Of the minuses – the interface. It turned out to be too sloppy, especially the subtitles, which are difficult to read in some situations, for example, when crafting or in the menu. Long loading times on PlayStation 4 are also disappointing. On PC, everything is much faster, so console players will have to be patient.
Pros and Cons of Stories: The Path of Destinies
Stories: The Path of Destinies is one of those rare projects that captivate not because of graphics or budget, but because of the idea. Yes, the game lacks polish — it’s obvious that resources were tight. But it has something that many “smooth” and expensive titles lack — soul and originality.
The main feature is nonlinearity. The player is offered to experience a story with different development options, and each choice really changes something. You can count such games on your fingers. Leveling up the hero is not just for show: you create new swords, enhance abilities — and you really feel the character’s growth. The combat system is simple, but lively, without unnecessary complexity.

What is missing? A variety of enemies — you essentially fight the same ones. And this begins to tire. Plus, on PS4, loading times sometimes drag on to the point of absurdity. Nevertheless, Stories is a game that I want to recommend. Not for everyone, but for those who appreciate unusual forms of storytelling, definitely.
