We play as Beatrix LeBeau, a mysterious heroine whose past is almost unknown. She begins a new life on a small abandoned ranch located in the heart of a distant land called Dry Reef. This place once belonged to a legendary slime breeder and a little eccentric old man named Hobson Twillgers. He was known for his reputation and unconventional views, but before he mysteriously disappeared, he brought the ranch to desolation.
Now everything is in our hands. Immediately upon arrival, we are met by the 7Zee corporation with brief instructions and… freedom of action. No strict framework – you want to explore, you want to breed slimes, you want to just admire the scenery. This world is open to your ideas and decisions.

Once upon a time, an ordinary girl named Beatrix lived on Earth (well, that’s you, the player). Tired of the eternal hustle and bustle, city noise and endless routine, she decided to take a radical step – to leave everything behind and go to another world, away from earthly worries. So she found herself on a distant, bright planet, where instead of problems there are fluffy slimes, colorful biomes and endless spaces calling for exploration.
Now she – and therefore you – has a chance to build her own farm, fill it with kind creatures and unravel all the secrets of this amazing planet. And there are many of them! Every corner of the world hides something special, and the past of this place is gradually revealed through holographic messages from Hobson – a mysterious man who once lived here before you. He, like you, left Earth in search of something more, something real.

The story is presented unobtrusively – in pieces, through an introduction, ending and found records. The more you explore, the clearer it becomes: you and Hobson have a lot in common. His motives – his loneliness, his search for meaning – can resonate somewhere inside. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will say this: the ending touched me deeply. Tears were very close.

Slime Rancher Gameplay
Slime Rancher is not just a farm, but a real adventure in an open world where you explore, build and communicate with charming creatures. Your main assistant is a universal vacuum backpack that can suck in objects and throw them back. With its help, you interact with the world – catch slimes, collect resources and equip your corner.
At the very beginning, you are given a modest ranch with several empty areas for buildings. But do not rush to get upset – over time, you will open new areas, from cozy sea docks to a futuristic laboratory. Yes, in this game you can stir up an entire scientific station!

The game mechanics are simple and brilliant: catch slimes, populate them in specially built enclosures, feed them, and in return they give you plorts – a kind of “gemstone” poop. These plorts can be sold on the exchange, and the proceeds can be invested in the development of the farm. But do not rush to sell – the market lives its own life, and prices constantly fluctuate. Sometimes it is more profitable to wait and sell the plorts later to get the maximum profit.
Here is how one day usually goes on your slime farm:
-
In the morning, you check the enclosures and collect the plorts.
-
Then feed the slimes their favorite treats.
-
In parallel, you can explore new locations or improve the base.
-
In the evening – trade at the market and plan for the next day.
The world of Slime Rancher is full of amazing locations, but access to them will not open immediately. For this, you will need special keys. You can get them with the help of … Gordo-slimes! These giants consist of many ordinary slimes fused into one huge, and very hungry, carcass. Find this giant’s favorite food, feed him well – and he will literally explode with happiness, leaving behind a whole bunch of small slimes and the treasured key to a new territory.
Slime Rancher Graphics
It’s clear from the first glance at the screenshots that this game has a simply charming visual style. Yes, some might say that graphics in video games are not the most important thing. But haven’t you ever felt a slight desire to launch the game just by looking at its pictures? That’s what I’m talking about. It seems to say, “You’re welcome here. Here you can breathe out and just be yourself.”
Its cartoonish, good-natured style creates an amazing feeling of safety and warmth. Every time I return to this game, I have the same feeling as before — like in my school years, when before or right after classes I would launch Slime Rancher, draw slimes in a notebook and correspond with other fans. It was a special time. And, you know, when I opened the game again for this article, it was as if I was there again for a second. Now, while you are reading these lines, I am typing them to the music from the game — and it’s like meditation.

Yes, it is impossible not to admit that the graphics have already lost some of their relevance – especially when compared to the sequel. But that is its charm: it does not try to shine with modern special effects and “RTX magic”. Its strength is in the atmosphere. In that sincere, cozy, almost tube-like atmosphere that modern games often lose. And it copes with this flawlessly.
Top Slime Types in Slime Rancher and How They Behave
What’s the first thing that pops into your head when you hear the name of this game? Probably: open world, farming… and, of course, slimes! These jelly creatures are the real stars of Slime Rancher, and there are a lot of them. I’ll tell you about just a few favorites, so as not to spoil all the fun for you beforehand.
-
Pink slime is a classic. Simple, pink, eats everything and isn’t picky. A real sweetheart, with whom it all begins.
-
Rock slime – all in spikes and sullen blue. A walking “careful, it hurts.” He’s not evil – just prickly in life.
-
Meow slime – fluffy… well, almost. A gray cat-slime that can jump on you when you least expect it. And yes, it meows!
-
Phosphorus slime – a gentle night firefly that appears only after sunset. It glows, doesn’t bite, and disappears with the first rays of the sun. Keep it in the shade – and you will have comfort.
-
Radioactive slime – as if you wandered into Fallout. It glows poisonous green and slowly poisons everything around it. Cute, right? The main thing is to keep your distance.
-
Boom Slime is a walking firework. Red, hot and unpredictable: can explode from an excess of feelings. And then gets scared of his own “boom”.
-
Honey Slime is sticky, sweet and incredibly cute. Seriously, how does he manage to stay so clean? Even flies don’t stick!
-
Puddle Slime is a shy water with eyes. He only feels comfortable in a puddle, and without water he literally melts. It seems like we are kindred spirits.
And this is only a small part – I will leave the rest of the slimes for dessert. Believe me, meeting each one is a separate adventure.

But lest you think that everything here is painfully cute and cloying, allow me to introduce… varrs. These slimes are something between a monster and an ecosystem error. They appear when slimes accidentally eat a plort of the wrong kind. Voila – cuteness turns into a nightmare. Varrs consume everything that moves, and if you do not intervene in time, your farm can turn into an arena of chaos.
So take care of your pets, watch their diet – and maybe you will survive. Good luck, slime farmer!
Slime Rancher: Pros and Cons of the Game
At first glance, it may seem that Slime Rancher is another farm simulator: you take care of the beds, harvest, sell plorts. But in fact, the game reveals itself much deeper. This is a whole world in which you are given complete freedom – whether you want to sit on a cozy farm and grow carrots, or whether you want to go explore mysterious biomes and collect rare slimes that you have not seen yet. The game literally tells you: “Do what you want and enjoy it.” The farm, of course, is the heart of the game. Gradually, you develop your ranch, build enclosures, feed the slimes, collect plorts and monitor the balance. And, admittedly, this process is addictive: taking care of the slimes is pleasant, and watching how everything starts to work like clockwork is generally meditative. But at the same time, the game does not hold you within limits: at any moment you can drop everything and go deep into unknown territories.

As for the downsides, yes, there are some:
-
The graphics are a bit outdated: it’s obvious that the game is already several years old, especially when compared to modern indie projects.
-
The optimization is not perfect: on weak PCs, FPS drops are possible, especially in busy locations.
But the game has many more advantages, and they easily offset these little things:
-
A surprisingly bright and warm visual style – everything around literally glows with coziness.
-
The gameplay is calm, but at the same time varied: farming, research, searching for resources and caches.
-
The soundtrack is soft and unobtrusive – perfect for an evening game after a hard day.
-
The story is presented unobtrusively, but if you want, you can immerse yourself in it and find interesting details.
-
The game does not stretch out – you choose the pace yourself, and nothing forces you to run forward.
Slime Rancher is all about relaxing, feeling free and just enjoying the process. Whether you stay on the farm or go on expeditions, every moment in this game is filled with soft light, kindness and coziness.
