We have in our hands “Corsairs: To Each His Own”, a game with the euphonious English subtitle Pirates Odyssey. Behind this project are old friends – “Akella” and the enthusiast studio Black Mark Studio. Apparently, this is the final chord of the entire domestic “corsair” saga, which began in a Moscow basement in the early 2000s, when 3D games were just starting to gain momentum. Since then, the genre, to put it mildly, has not spoiled us with fresh ideas.
After the unsuccessful release of “Corsairs 3” in 2005, fans from Seaward.Ru came to the rescue, managing to breathe life into the project with the help of the add-on “Return of the Legend” (2006), and then “City of Lost Ships” (2007). They were planning “Corsairs 4” as well, but the development dragged on, and the old versions still left room for improvement.
Then a new group of dedicated fans took up the cause, uniting under the name Black Mark. When it became clear that Akella had abandoned the “fourth Corsairs” and frozen the project for an indefinite period, these guys decided to turn their fan modification into a full-fledged commercial game – with the help of a not very selfless publisher who holds a license for the Storm Engine.

Sea Dogs: To Each His Own Free Steam Account
The result of this collaboration turned out to be quite controversial: the game “Corsairs: To Each His Own” was hit with a barrage of criticism, and a considerable number of reviews were frankly full of indignation. The most criticism was directed at the outdated graphics – many people were reminded of the times of “Corsairs 3”, or even something from the early 2000s. Indeed, few people know that “Akella” was then using art blanks from 2002, from the cancelled project “Corsairs 2”, which was later transformed into “Pirates of the Caribbean” under the Disney license. Even in our editorial office, many refused to look at the screenshots, exclaiming: “Seriously? What kind of artifact is this? What is its release date anyway?” Compare this with the magnificent naval episodes in Assassin’s Creed 3 – the contrast is colossal. And the criticism is entirely justified: Storm Engine version 2.8 is already a rarity today. Back in 2007, it was criticized for the “City of Lost Ships”, calling the graphics archaic and outdated.
But it is worth acknowledging that in its time, the Storm Engine was a real breakthrough. It was an ambitious domestic development that had no analogues in the West. Russian developers were able to combine three large-scale engines at once: a land-based action component, naval battles, and a global economic map. All this in one technical solution. And, surprisingly, it worked. Moreover, it still works, albeit with reservations. The peak of the engine’s development came with the unreleased game “The Adventures of Captain Blood”, which has a whole drama behind it – but let the developers themselves tell about this. They know how to convey the inner workings and history of the project in an exciting way.

And now about the project itself “Corsairs: To Each His Own”. This game was made by fans – and exclusively for fans. This is essentially an indie project with a soul, but it is not designed for a wide audience. If you are far from the series, you will most likely only get irritation and bewilderment. One look at the screenshots will be enough to understand how sad everything is – both in terms of budget and technical condition. And it is sad to realize that the once cult series was missed by those publishers who, perhaps, simply did not see anything in it except potential profit. So the dreams of “Corsairs 4” collapsed. The Seaward.Ru studio, which was actively working on the project, was literally cut off from oxygen back in 2010.
But not everything is so gloomy. There is another side – the fan side, full of nostalgia, love and acceptance. And if you want to look at the game from a different angle, listen to those who put their souls into it. Sometimes these are the opinions that turn out to be the most honest and touching.

Best story in the series
The first fan addon to Corsairs 3, Return of the Legend, was conceived as a revolution: a multi-party mode with chess logic and endless replayability. But the reality turned out to be much more prosaic – a meager selection of quests quickly reduced the interest in repeated playthroughs to nothing. GPK tried to revive the game with rich content – from the storyline with Captain Blood to the hunt for the mysterious City of Lost Ships. All this was a step forward, but the story really played out only in To Each His Own. Here, the plot does not just complement the game – it became its heart.
The authors approached the narrative with love for detail: interesting presentation, clear structure, many events. Sometimes the player is even required to write down information manually or remember details from dialogues – and this only fuels the feeling of “hardcore”. And all this works for the atmosphere, which is felt especially strongly in CS.

It all starts in the usual way – as in the cult modification ALexusB “Return of the Sea Legend”, the main character appears in the world practically from scratch. But now you are met not by emptiness, but by a chain of well-thought-out quests that make the first settlement – Saint-Pierre on Martinique – alive and recognizable. We help the owner of the shop, who is trying to introduce competition into the city trade, we rescue a prisoner for the local moneylender and learn the sad story of the innkeeper, who lost his daughter due to dubious connections with smugglers. “To each his own” – these are exactly the “Corsairs” that were so lacking in the distant 2005, when we eagerly read the first previews from the developers. All those fantasies that then seemed like PR, today are embodied in the game – in mechanics, features, quests and even little things. But all this wealth falls like a heavy burden on the shoulders of the old Storm Engine, which, frankly, is long overdue for retirement.
It is not surprising that the engine is choking from the number of processes – here you have real-time trading, and the movement of fleets on the global map even when the player is just sleeping in the tavern, and mass battles with dozens of participants, where dozens of fencing parameters are calculated in real time. All this looks like a miracle on the engine, which was written off to a museum back in 2007.
And yet – “CS” does not just stay afloat. It inspires, touches and makes you fall in love with it in the way that only games made by fans can – for fans.
Why You Should Play the Updated Version of Corsairs
The developers from Black Mark Studio decided to approach the engine carefully — they didn’t change it drastically, so as not to break what was already working stably. Instead, they invested in something that could really revive the game: they reworked the scripts, refreshed the appearance — added a stylish and user-friendly interface, updated the models and textures, and introduced new, truly atmospheric maps. As a result, many new functions and features appeared that not only work stably, but also expand the gaming experience. Take the same alchemy: at first it seems that this is just a secondary feature, but when you find rare ingredients or a hand grenade blueprint in chests, you understand that this is an important part of the mechanics.
For those tired of the usual Caribbean islands from previous parts, the game offers something fresh: now you can go in search of unknown lands. With the help of navigation tools, the hero discovers new islands, where, perhaps, no European has set foot before him. These places can hide both untold riches and dangers: wild tribes, traps, skirmishes with the natives. Sometimes, instead of gold, you get a chest with dirty boots or a pair of dead rats – but everything is truly alive, with rumors, tales and coincidences that enliven the exploration of the world.

The reworked combat system is especially impressive. Now fencing is not just “punch and block”, but a whole science. Seven different types of attacks and feints, a blade balance system that reflects where exactly the center of gravity of the weapon is located – closer to the handle or to the tip. Your fighting style directly depends on this: to punch or cunningly feint. If you choose the right blade and master the technique, then even at an early stage you can feel like a master of the sword. Or, as an option, give everything to the boarders – or click the mouse “at random”.
The updates did not bypass the navy either. All models have been redesigned – now they not only look impressive, but also behave realistically. Damage to masts, broken tillers (without which the ship loses maneuverability), verified characteristics – all this adds depth to sea battles. And the variety of equipment and weapons is amazing: from shells to large plot items – everything is done taking into account the era. Even a random Russian on the archipelago will teach you how to drink vodka according to the rules, so as not to get drunk from one sip. Of course, if this game had been released seven years ago, rave reviews would have been guaranteed. But even today the project is worthy of attention, especially if the price is reasonable. Although not everything is perfect: the sound part suffers. Although the NPC lines have become newer, there are noticeably fewer of them, music is less common, and natural sounds sometimes disappear altogether – the sound of the sea, for example, can simply disappear. But even with these flaws, To Each His Own is a shining example of how fan work can breathe new life into an old game.
Sea Dogs: To Each His Own – Pros and Cons
Sometimes it’s not the weak games that disappoint the most, but the forgotten legends. Today, we regretfully give Akella a “C” for how it treated the brand that gave the world a unique pirate genre in 2000. It was high time to release “Corsairs 4”, but instead we are sent back to the familiar ruins of Storm Engine 2.8. We continue to sink enemy ships near faceless islands and listen to the same melodies, dreaming of something more.

And yet, hope lives. Thanks to fan studios like Seaward and Black Mark Studio, the world of pirate adventures still has a chance to be reborn. These guys show how much love for the craft can mean.
