RUNGORE — when defeat also brings pleasure. What happens if you combine the madness of Loop Hero with the card tactics of Slay the Spire, and top it off with a generous splash of absurd humor and neon retro art? That’s how RUNGORE appeared, a wild IDLE roguelike game in which you can even lose somehow… nice. In this review, we look at why the game deserves not just a cursory glance, but at least a solid place on the vishlist.

A knight-boy, an archer-boy, an eternally hungry boy… Not exactly the fantasy team you expect from the dark Middle Ages, right? But these strange mercenaries are the main characters of RUNGORE, and no matter how ridiculous they look, you will definitely not get bored with them. And you get used to them quickly – they are very charismatic. Forget about pompous introductions, world-scale drama and saving the universe. Here everything starts right away – the game immediately lays out its main trump card: original gameplay, which combines the mechanics of a roguelike and a card battler. And it works, I must say.

Your hero rushes through the level, encountering monsters, but you cannot control him directly – he fights on his own. The player’s task is to throw him cards from the deck to help him. Choosing a card at the right moment is your way to influence the battle. And even though it sounds simple, you won’t be able to relax.

Despite the unconventional approach, the roguelike spirit is 100% preserved here. There are interesting points on the map, including battles, passes and bosses that are not always visible at first glance. There is progression between runs – with surprises, but without spoilers. And most importantly – short game sessions. Ideal if you only have a couple of minutes between things: one run lasts from two to five minutes, and this is enough to get a dose of fun.

As for the cards, everything is familiar: after each battle, you choose new ones. Cards can be offensive, defensive, accelerating, there are assistants or even traps. You can play everything in a row, and for a couple of moments your boy-knight will become a demigod of justice, flying at enemies. But in the next battle, he will again be on a starvation diet – with an empty hand and new problems.

RUNGORE is a fast, absurd, but smart game. You can laugh here, but you still have to turn on your brain. Otherwise, the kid won’t survive.

RUNGORE Gameplay

This is especially noticeable when you encounter bosses. One of them is a multi-armed mutant that doubles its damage every couple of seconds. Another is a zombie that respawns endlessly, fully restoring health after each death. And these are not exceptions – here, each enemy is dangerous in its own way. Even tiny opponents like bats or… tombstones (!) have unique features and will not let you relax. Before the start of each level, the game kindly shows us what monsters are waiting for us there. If you want – get ready, if not – be prepared to get it in full. And yes, if you ignore the warning, you will be subtly laughed at.

Humor is the most important element in RUNGORE, it is like a framework on which all other mechanics are based. The game constantly throws up absurd and comical situations, does not miss a chance to insert a meme or a reference. For example, when I was left without cards and got to the event, the game honestly admitted: “Well… we didn’t expect that.” Or at the level with radiation – of course, Fallout is remembered not just like that, but in the context of the gameplay: the reference turns into an active event.

The game world is presented in the form of separate locations – each of them resembles a tower with several floors. On the final floor, a boss is always waiting. And what’s cool is that each map has its own atmosphere, its enemies and mechanics. In the city, for example, we will meet goblins with firearms, and in the cemetery – real works of Frankenstein. All this makes each attempt fresh and interesting. Our heroes may not have a great goal, but they have a path. And watching them go along it is pure pleasure.

During the runs, we collect gold coins. They can be spent on power-ups so that the chances of survival are a little higher next time. But the game surprises again: for these coins you can unlock not only armor or cards, but also… new gameplay functions. For example, initially you can’t sort cards or slow down time – and this really gets in the way, because during a fight everything happens very quickly.

And in the end, we have a choice: take a convenient mechanic that will make the fight easier, or shiny armor for the soul? Such decisions add depth even to simple actions – and this is the charm of RUNGORE.

Why you should try RUNGORE

RUNGORE hooks you from the first try – once you finish one run, your hand automatically reaches out to press “one more time”. And even losing doesn’t irritate you: when you’re suddenly smeared across the wall by a multi-armed monster, it’s more of an incentive to come back with a new plan. You can get to it again in just a couple of minutes, but with a different approach and a fresh deck of cards.

It’s surprising that the idea of automatic gameplay in the spirit of Loop Hero hasn’t received widespread recognition – although, as RUNGORE shows, IDLE and roguelike mechanics can live in perfect harmony. The game is perfect for evenings when you want something simple but exciting. Highly recommended for roguelike fans. And if you’re not familiar with the genre, try it anyway. It’s quite possible that you’ll get hooked too.

What I liked:

• Unusual and successful combination of the genres IDLE and roguelike
• The game is captivating and does not require much time
• Fast, dynamic runs
• Excellent sense of humor and funny references
• Visual style is pleasing to the eye

• Sometimes there are minor bugs, but nothing critical

And what about the graphics? Surprisingly, everything is fine. Although at first I doubted it: the interface seemed too cumbersome, as if the game decided that I did not have a Full HD, but a screen from somewhere in the early 2000s. But after a couple of minutes, my eyes got used to it, and everything fell into place. The visual style of RUNGORE refers to the spirit of retro – pixel elements, simple animations, a little old school. At the same time, the picture looks neat and is not annoying at all. Moreover, thanks to this approach, the game can be easily launched even on antediluvian machines with 256 megabytes of RAM – and everything will fly.
