When the first Risk of Rain came out in 2013, it was a pleasant surprise for fans of co-op 2D platformers – albeit a rather niche one. The modest but gripping story of survival on a hostile planet quickly found its audience. And then came the real breakthrough: seven years later, after a year and a half in early access, Risk of Rain 2 was released – this time in full 3D and on a much larger scale. The game instantly became a hit, and the developers recently shared an impressive figure: more than three million people have tried it on Steam. Why is this roguelike so beloved by players? Let’s figure out what the magic is.

“Easy to learn, hard to survive” — this is probably how you can describe Risk of Rain 2. Each game in this game is like a leap into the unknown. We are thrown onto a mysterious planet, where chaos immediately begins: monsters attack from all sides, and there is no time to warm up. The first goal is to find a teleporter, activate it, survive its charging time and at the same time defeat the boss, who is clearly not in the mood to let us go.
As soon as we figured this out, we are teleported to the next location, and everything starts again, only more difficult: new opponents, a different landscape, and not a second of peace. It is important to understand that time is against us here. The longer we stay on the level, the stronger the enemies become. Hesitation is almost guaranteed death, because the enemies not only grow in level, but also literally fill the map with their numbers.

Before the start of the run, the game offers to choose a difficulty level. There are three of them, and only the easiest is suitable for those who are in Risk of Rain 2 for the first time. Already at the average level, the difficulty skyrockets: monsters seem to materialize out of thin air, surrounding you from all sides. You won’t be able to escape by running away – they will follow you to the end. Therefore, it is better to immediately engage in battle than to try to escape and drag a whole crowd of enraged creatures along with you.
But for killing, you get currency and experience, thanks to which the character becomes stronger, more powerful and deadlier. Level by level, we pump up damage, health and get closer and closer to crazy action, from which it is impossible to tear yourself away.

Risk of Rain 2 Items and Relics Guide
In Risk of Rain 2, as in any self-respecting roguelike, the key to survival is the right choice of items and upgrades. They are literally scattered everywhere: in chests, vending machines, on altars and even in teleportable containers. But no one will give them away for free – everything is bought for coins that fall from destroyed monsters. This moment creates an interesting dynamic: the more actively you fight, the more resources and opportunities for strengthening.
What really sets Risk of Rain 2 apart from other games is the simply insane number of artifacts, relics and bonuses, each of which affects the gameplay in its own way. Some heal when taking damage, others increase the chance of dodging, others call friendly drones or creatures to help. There are items that launch homing missiles, release daggers after each kill, speed up movement, double your jump, or even create a gravity vortex that sucks in enemies for a few seconds. There are also more team-oriented things, like planting a flag that heals allies within its area. This adds extra depth, especially in co-op. Some items work passively, while others are manually activated. And all of this gradually accumulates, turning your hero into a real machine of destruction – but the enemies also become stronger with each stage to balance your forces.

At the start of each level, it is important not to waste time: collect starting coins as quickly as possible and spend them on assistant drones. These robots can shoot at enemies or heal you, and having at least one is often a matter of survival in the first minutes. This is one of the first tasks of any player – to find the nearest machine gun or capsule with a drone and activate it before you are surrounded by monsters. But this is just the beginning. The game world is full of interactive objects, like 3D printers. They exchange one of the items you already have for another, often more valuable one. There are also altars, the work of which depends on luck: they can give out a powerful artifact, start restoring health in the radius of action or … on the contrary, strengthen the nearest boss. But if the risk is justified, the boss can drop a double reward, which is very important in the conditions of constant build-up of strength.
The rarest and most interesting finds are artifacts – special objects that change the basic rules of the game. You can’t just find them, for this you need to complete a chain of actions, find certain codes, activate the portal and go through a special zone. But the reward is worth the effort. After activating the artifact in the lobby, the entire subsequent run will take place with a new condition. For example: enemies themselves begin to pick up items, their number doubles, but they become weaker; friendly fire is activated; or, what is especially tense – the Artifact of Revenge is activated. With it, every 10 minutes your clone appears on the map – with the same items, abilities and stats, but now he is a boss, and he wants you dead.
It is these unusual mechanics that make Risk of Rain 2 truly unique. It is not just running around with guns in a sci-fi setting, but an ever-changing challenge, where each new run is a chance to try a different build, a different approach and experience a completely different adventure.
How to Unlock All Characters in Risk of Rain 2
In Risk of Rain 2, each character belongs to a unique class with their own special abilities and fighting style. At the beginning, you only have access to the Commando, a versatile fighter who can not only fire continuously, but also occasionally unleash powerful volleys or pin down enemies with bursts.
The rest of the heroes — and there are nine of them — are unlocked gradually, and to do so, you will have to fulfill different conditions. For example, to unlock the fast-moving Huntress, armed with homing arrows and spears, you need to complete three levels in a row without dying even once. And if you want to play as the heavy MUL-T — a combat robot that shoots rebar and nails — you will have to complete the first stage five times.

Some classes will require real persistence from you. The Loader can only be obtained after completing a special task and defeating a unique boss. And to play as the Captain, a hero added in the final version of the game, you need to complete the entire game and defeat the main villain on the Moon.
And finally, if you dream of playing as a colorful Inventor, a master of the elements who can both fry and freeze enemies, or a Mercenary with a laser blade and double jump, or even a poisonous monster Akrid, you will have to find a way to hidden locations. These heroes are not hiding on the surface, and only the most curious and persistent players will be able to find them.
So is it worth playing?
One of Risk of Rain 2’s greatest assets, which deserves a special mention, is its passion for mystery. This isn’t just “another roguelike shooter” with waves of enemies – this is a game that regularly throws unexpected discoveries at you. It’s as if it’s whispering: “Are you sure you know everything that’s hidden here?”
Go a little further, take a wrong turn, open a portal – and you’re no longer on a regular map, but in the mysterious Bazaar Beyond Time. This place only appears under certain conditions and, if you’re lucky, you’ll get there between stages. Visually, it resembles a dream or a glitch in the matrix: the space is frozen, the sounds are muffled, everything seems to be torn out of the flow of time. And it’s here that you can exchange your resources for unique items, purchase rare items for lunar coins, and even unlock new characters. This isn’t just a hidden location – it’s a full-fledged game layer that opens up unexpected tactical possibilities for you.
What about artifacts? They are game-changing: they can add friendly fire, make enemies explode, or, conversely, unite the fates of all team members. But to unlock them, it’s not enough to just want them — you first need to find a special Easter egg on one of the maps, and then enter the combination on an ancient terminal. It’s almost like mini-quests within the main gameplay: each discovery seems deserved, and therefore especially valuable.

Although you can play alone, Risk of Rain 2 truly shines in co-op. This part is inherited from the original game, but with the transition to 3D format and a third-person camera in the second part, co-op play has become noticeably livelier, more emotional and simply more exciting. You and your partners appear on a planet full of hostile creatures, and literally from scratch begin to build your strength: collect items, upgrade skills, share loot. Even if class abilities are not directly focused on support, co-op still forces you to play together – not for the sake of mechanics, but because otherwise you will not survive. One distracts the boss, the second heals, the third launches a fiery avalanche. Coordinated play is valued here no less than a successful build.
Some artifacts especially enhance teamwork. For example, the artifact of Death: if at least one member of the squad dies, everyone else dies too. It becomes scary, fun and tense at the same time. No one wants to be the one who causes the entire team to go down, so everyone starts literally running after each other with first aid kits and cover.
If you like roguelikes with deep mechanics, a lot of content and the ability to play with friends, Risk of Rain 2 is definitely worth a try. It does not forgive mistakes, but generously rewards attention to detail, curiosity and teamwork.
Pros:
-
Huge scope for experimenting with builds and artifacts
-
Many characters and items, each of which affects the game in its own way
-
Interesting meta-game with hidden zones, codes, Easter eggs
-
One of the most action-packed co-ops in the genre
Cons:
-
The visual style is specific – some may find it simple, especially at first. But when the heat of battle hits you, this becomes the last thing you pay attention to.
